Happy Friday people of the bar! It's that ATTF time again :)

This week is all about the PLACES in the Marvel universe. From New York to Budapest, Sokovia to Kathmandu, Siberia to Wakanda, Earth to the rest of the Galaxy... we're seeing more and more of the Marvel universe. This week we're going to explore!

> What are your thoughts/headcanons about the places we've been introduced to?
> Share your favourite screenshots, fun facts, any interesting about places in the Marvel universe, or that you've been to, would love to go to...anywhere!
> Share your headcanons about the places that our favourite assassins have been to, for missions or for fun.
> What characters would you like to send where?
- How do you go about embedding your fic/creative work in a particular location and bringing that place to life?
> Rec creative works set around the world or ones where you think a sense of place was really well done

Welcome to your weekend getaway :)

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)</smal

Dear Comm Members (those of you who haven't scattered yet out of fear of the new LJ Terms of Service):

I think most of us here are fans of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and its progenitor/parellel universe, the Marvel Comics and their various divergent versions (616, Ultimates, Fraction/Aja, Edmunson/Noto ...).  Because once you love Clint and Natasha, you can't get enough of them - I know I've been digging up even some vintage versions of them since the days when I professed complete ignorance of the comics 'verse.

So tell us - do you have a preference?  Slight or definitive?  Do you prefer terse, flinty-eyed, Ultimates-inspired Hawkdad from the MCU; the human-car-crash-but-still-professional Fraction version; or the atonement-driven Occupy Avengers guy in the tac suit?  Do you harken back to the femme fatale assassin of the 616; or do you prefer the sarcastic Avengers whisperer played by Scarlett Johansson, or the guilt-ridden, liquid-eyed cat lover created by Phil Noto?

Or do you do pick and choose what you like and mash them up into the kind of convergent whole Marvel never seems to quite manage?

And while you're at it, do you have any recs you can share for your favourite fanfic version of Clint and/or Natasha (whether inspired by one of the "originals" or completely different)?

And finally, do you foresee any convergence of the comics verse and the MCU in the forthcoming Avengers 3 and 4?

The floor is yours!

(Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

This weekend let’s talk about titles!

When do you decide on the title for a fic? Do you usually know at the start and build the fic around the title, or are you the kind of person who scrambles to find one after the fic is complete? How do you chose your titles or get inspiration for them? Capitals or lower case? What’s your favourite title that you’ve come up with? Artists, how do you name your art?

What about other people’s titles, are there any that you especially like or that grabbed your attention? Are there any film, book etc titles that got you interested?

In today's ATTF:

a) post a comment chatting about any or all of the above. Let's have some conversations!

b) here's a thing that I found with a 'twenty titles for a writer' exercise. Pick one of your fics/peices of art/vids etc - either finished and already posted, or something new that you're working on - and have a go at this exercise. Post the results in a comment. Everyone else, which titles do you think work best?

Artists: here's an art of the title selection that's fun! Maybe pick a title - even a title from this weekend's ATTF - and play around with how you could make it look?

c) comment with ASK ME and a link to where people can find your creative works. People will then reply with one/some of your titles. Reply with where that title came from, why you chose it, your thoughts behind it.

d) ALL THE THINGS! This is, after all, entitled All The Things Friday ;)

You can sign up to host an ATTF, suggest ideas for future ATTFs, and see what's coming up in ATTFs HERE

(Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

20 May 2016 @ 01:00 pm
Inspired by our two favourite assassins, this week’s ATTF topic is languages. Specifically languages and how they’re portrayed in media.

We know that Natasha’s first language is Russian and, in the comics at least, Clint can ‘speak’ sign language. Considering that they’re spies and have a history of travelling the world it’s likely that they also speak other languages.

I’ve seen comics portray other languages by putting an asterisk to a translation, or to a note saying ‘they’re actually speaking in X’. The excellent David Aja was creative the Hawkeye comics in his portrayal of languages – and hearing difficulties – in speech bubbles, but also using sign language, body language, and even symbols for a dog’s-eye view of the world:

What do you think about how languages are shown in the films and comics? What about other media and what about in fanfiction? How have you seen other languages depicted, how do you like to see them depicted, and is that dependent on circumstances? For example, if the protagonist isn’t meant to be able to understand the language/s they’re hearing. How have you depicted other languages?

Feel free to bring other films, tv shows, books, and media into this conversation. For example, in Firefly to show how the American and Asian cultures had merged in the future – and so that the characters could swear creatively – the English speaking cast swore in, and emphasised points in, Mandarin. But then I’m curious, if we’d had an Asian character would they have sworn in English?

And those of you from non-English countries, tell us about translations, dubbing, seeing your own languages as ‘foreign’, all the things. Lets talk about things that are lost in translation. Let’s talk about accents and dialect. Let's talk about swearing and getting creative with curses. Let’s talk about Allspeak and how that even works.

Let’s talk about talking: go!

(Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Hello Best of Bars!

Time for a little Friday something.  Most of us here write fan fiction, and those of us who don't, read it.  Or make cool art.  And when you do any of these things, you will have come across things that make you go, "WAIT.  Did they just make that up?  No -- can't be.  It's too familiar.  Must be from ..."

Chances are, you've come across fanon.  Some idea or factoid that has turned up so often, it's become Truth.  Like those things:

- Coulson recruited Clint.
- Natasha drinks tea.
- He made that different call because he watched her care for civilians/children/a kitten.

That's fanon -- fan-made canon.

If you're the only one who has one of those ideas, that's head canon.  Sometimes, you get the ultimate compliment from a reader:  "head canon accepted."  And if that happens often enough, your brilliant idea can turn into fanon!

Finally, there are the fanfic formats we all love so much, people have turned them into bingos:  the good old tropes"  H/C, friends-to-lovers, body swaps, sex pollen...

All of it adds up to making fan fic into something comfy and familiar that you can pull over your shoulders like an old blanket at the end of a tiring day at the coal face of life.  So, here's the challenge:

-  Tell us your favourite fanon and tropes -- ideally with a fic rec? (And yes, fic self recs are cool!  Help our newbies find your stuff!!!)
-  Or give us a three-sentence fic with one!
-  Which are the ones you can't stand, and wish that they would disappear back under the rock whence they crawled?
-  Tell us your favourite head canon(s)!
-  Maybe you have an instance where your head canon turned up in a movie and you had that delicious moment of wondering whether Joss Whedon read your fic?

Go forth and prosper -- all weekend long! (It's a three-day one here in Europe, so yay! us...)

(Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Driving home tonight I passed one of those traveling carnivals set up in the parking lot of a local movie theater, the kind where everything either has wheels or can be packed up in a couple of semi trucks. There was a circle of RVs around the back side of all the rides and game booths. Which, of course, led me to start thinking about our favorite ex-carnie, Clint Barton, and what his life was like as a kid. It’s comic book canon that he and his brother Barney ran away from the orphanage and ended up living and working in a traveling carnival. And it seems like in the MCU, Clint has a military background. But you need a high school diploma or GED to join the US military. So if he was a traveling carnie, how the heck did he get his education? He wasn’t attending the local school. I’m not sure if it’s canon or fanon that Clint is very well read, but if he was a traveling carnie, he wouldn’t be able to get a library card, so where did he get his books?

I know I'm smashing together comics and MCU canon here, but that's what my brain does sometimes. Anyhoo, I'm curious, what are your theories about how Clint got his education? I need to develop some head canon around this.

This is a little off-topic but I thought that this would be a really interesting topic to discuss. So, members of this great bar, do you think that Marvel should also follow in Deadpool's footsteps and start to make R movies?

I personally loved Deadpool and had a great time watching the movie but some people who brought their young children to the movies were angry that it had a lot of bad words and stuff.  Obviously, because it was R, that was to be expected but should superhero movies even be R when a good majority of the fanbase is younger than 17?

Also, feel free to talk about other MCU movies and think of this as a general movie discussion!

So friendships. Relationships don't exist in a vaccuum, as I always remind myself when writing fic for said relationships, and there's a lot to be said for how our favorite assassins might handle their friendships.

In canon, Melinda has Natasha programmed in her phone, Maria promises Ward to tell Natasha what he said when she talks to her next, and Natasha cries when she thinks Fury is dead. (Is it just me, or does she get more on-screen friendship nods than Clint and is that significant?) Plus, of course, there's the whole 'I gotta find Steve a date' thing because they're obviously friends.

So what do you think? Do they have a circle of friends they share, friends who know their secrets, friends who don't, friends of one that the other can't stand? Share your headcanon, fic, and meta in the comments below!

Dearest and most beloved of Bars!

First things first:  IT'S FRIDAY!!!  *ahem*

Today, I thought, we could talk about things that might have happened before our great ship yacht sailed, and how/whether/if the existence of previous partners might feature in the lives of our favourite assassins, and how.

We know from comics canon (possibly, but not definitively modified in the MCU by Agents of SHIELD) that Clint was married to Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird.  How does he react when they run into each other at SHIELD?  How do they get along?  Would she and Natasha be friends?  ("So Bobbi tells me that I should just give up now on you ever putting the cap back on the toothpaste.  Lost cause, she says."  "When did you talk to her??  You guys doing some kind of all-girl conspiracy thing??"  "She also says you like to be scratched behind the ear, like a cat."  "That's total bullshit.  She's having you ...  hmmmm... do that again?")

We also understand from comics canon that Natasha and The Winter Soldier may, at some point, been together.  What was that like?  How, if true, would it impact on Steve's search, and Natasha's willingness to help, beyond handing him the file with a warning? Would Clint be nervous what might happen when Barnes turns up?

Then, there are of course other options.  My burgeoning head canon has Clint having had a fling with Melinda May at some point (strictly friends with benefits, although [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock turned that into a former marriage, in her wonderful story Two Truths and One Lie.)  We know May has Nat on speed dial, so what do they text each other about that won't pass the Bechdel test??

Give us your head canons, meta, recs, ficlets, snippets ...  And remember:

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.

Hello lovely comm! I've been mulling this topic over for a few weeks now, and decided that on this wonderful long holiday weekend I would share my Clint/Natasha thinky-thoughts as they pertain to Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Beware of spoilers for all episodes, including the most recent. I'm hoping to spur some discussion, some speculation... maybe inspire some fic... *looks hopeful*

Hello Best Bar EVER. Today I am your host for all things Friday. Today's topic has to do with my favorite thing to do in fandom....listening to songs and assign them to characters and ships.

Seriously I could be listening to Pandora at work and all of a sudden a song comes on and I am like AHA this is perfect for Sparky or 11/River. Usually these songs inspire me to write fics and do vidlets to them....so I am gonna share with you songs I think are perfect for our favorite Couple along with the lyrics that fit the best!. Just warning if you some of the songs may same too heavy rock for you....but is the only genre I like XD with some exceptions....here we go

PUMP UP THE VOLUME )

And there you have it my Clintasha playlist. Anyway if you have any questions on WHY I chose a certain song then please feel free to ask!

Now go ahead and post what songs you think are perfect for our assassins. It can be from rock to bubble gum pop. Hell even leave some MUSICAL PROMPTS. But remember to follow the rules.

(Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

In our ongoing efforts to bring squee to the community, behold our inaugural Monthly Comics Discussion Post!

The way it works: At the end of each month, we will interrupt our regular MCU-centric programming to talk about all things related to Clint and Natasha in the comics. Comics that were released during the month, comics you're currently reading, comics you've read and wish to discuss, etc. If you'd like to squee about comics not related to Clint or Natasha, we're okay with that. If comics are not your thing, we're okay with that too!

Come January, Clint and Natasha will each have their own ongoing comics. They are on the same team in Secret Avengers. This is all exciting stuff that deserves celebration.

Interested in reading about Clint and Natasha in the comics but don't know where to start? Here are some recs! )

Please note that this is by no means an essential or exhaustive list, and we welcome further recommendations in the comments. Most comics can be found in trade paperback format on Amazon, Book Depository or your local comic bookstore, and individual issues can be found online on sites such as Comixology, or at your local comic bookstore.

What are your favourite Clint and/or Natasha comics? Tell us about them!

While some comics are harder to come by, please don’t post torrent links in the comments.

Hello, hello, hello! In case you haven’t noticed Promptathon 2013 is here and happening!!! July 17th is the deadline for posting prompts. We’re also taking prompts for this month’s banner challenge with deadlines of July 21st for posting prompts and July 26th for responding with banners! Yes, folks, this IS prompting time!

But what, you may be asking, is all the fuss about prompts? How do people go about prompting? How do there come up with their prompts, or find their inspiration? When it comes to filling prompts, how strictly do people stick to them? What grabs people’s attention? Why are people so excited???

And then you might have specific questions to this promptathon: Can I use more than one prompt in one fill? Do fills have to be fics, or can they be other things like art, fanmixes, icons, wallpapers, and so on? If a prompt has already been filled can I still fill it as well? (To which the answers are: yes, yes, and yes!)

New to this bar or never done a promptathon before? HELLO! You have so much fun ahead :D Say hi and someone will fetch you a drink.

Bring your ideas and thinky thoughts (for which we have much love!), your questions (there is no such thing as a silly question!), your excitement and enthusiasm (I love everyone in this bar!) because IT’S PROMPTATHON TIME.

ATTF will now be on hiatus until after promptathon has finished. Keep your eyes peeled for a new sign up sheet coming to a comm near you soon.

(Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Apologies for a late ATTF today. Well, for some time zones anyway :)

Speculation, discussion, fic recs, and fun on all the things our assassins like to drive, fly, ride, etc. AKA Assassins And Their Transport. Go!

We've seen both of them flying although I got the impression Clint was piloting and Natasha was the co-pilot (?) and Clint drives off into the sunset with Loki at the start of the Avengers. Other than that? I recall conversations about Clint and cars - muscle cars, vintage cars - and I confess, I know nothing about cars, but the Hawkeye comics have me believing that Clint does (and also a thing for boats?). I blame The Bourne Identity for somehow thinking he has a thing for motorbikes maybe (and, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73 and [livejournal.com profile] bob5fic's Teenage Make Out Series, specifically part one, for thinking that Natasha is okay with this). Mind you, the photoshoots of Renner with motorbikes and cars certainly help as well! For Natasha, I have this headcanon that Maria Hill is awesome at evasive and dangerous driving, and that she taught Natasha, and that Natasha is far better at it than Clint. Mostly because she takes crazy driving seriously. But how many vehicles can they each drive, I wonder? What do they prefer? Weirdest thing they've hotwired/stolen? Any rules about who chooses the music? ...?

As always:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

I just found queer_fest over on dreamwidth, and I was wondering if anyone here was participating! (It's currently in the prompt-claiming stage.) There's a few interesting prompts for Clint and Natasha that either are pairings, or don't preclude the two of them dating (as "queer" obviously does not merely apply to sexuality, and bi-people dating people of the opposite gender are still bi :)).

I don't think I'm going to grab a claim, just because I'm dead of school at the moment, but the prompts've made me start thinking ... anything that catches your guys' eyes? Do you have any queer C/N recs? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is ashen_key's keeping your head above water (rated T, no warnings) which looks at their relationship through every combination of binary genders.

Some of the relevant prompts! )

Fair note that I might be quiet in the comments -- see above, re: school! But I'll be reading :)

Good morning, Best Bar On Earth!  Yep, it’s that Time Of The Week again – time to turn your Friday thoughts to our favourite assassins.

If you’re like me, you’ve been following the daily explosion of prompts for the Valentine's Day  Massacre Promptathon with awe and delight.  To relieve the pressure of the wait, today’s topic offers an opportunity to unleash small, short, smartbomblets of creativity and hopefully have some fun along the way.

The Premise:

Those of you who have ever worked on something that attracted public interest will know that media reports and internet theories relating to stuff you are deeply familiar with are often howlingly inaccurate, badly researched, and full of “spin.”  (Because hey, just reporting the news is boring and journos want people to pay attention to them -- so why not find that angle, sensationalize, or simply make stuff up to fill in the blanks?) Tweeters can get even worse -- internet anonymity allows the wildest ideas and most intrusive photos to zip around the globe in the time it takes Clint to nock an arrow.  And then there are the ordinary citizens caught up in the fray.  How do they see all this gods-and-monsters stuff

The Scene:

In the last scenes of the movie Fury stands in front of a bank of monitors with newsfeeds, amateur videos of the Chitauri battle, so we know the stuff is out there – it’s practically canon!!!  ("Superheroes in New York???  Gimme a break ...")  The awe-inspiringly productive [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81  left a prompt for the VD extravaganza (something about all the incredible media footage and newspaper/magazine articles about Avengers”); my own personal head canon has Clint and Natasha amusing each other while leveling out by reading blogs, tweets and news coverage of their supposed exploits. The time is clearly right...

Your Challenge:

Give us your reports, blogs, tweets, PMs, YouTube clips, pics, diary entries, e-mails and water cooler rehashes of The Day New York Exploded.  Pick the perspective, the degree of accuracy, the spin -- maybe the reaction of C or N to seeing stuff about themselves?  Or else, give us your meta and thinky thoughts on what all that media coverage might mean for future SHIELD undercover ops, for the appearance of stalking fans, *cough* LJ sites devoted to *cough* certain assassins ...

I’m currently reclining on my couch at home so I can read anything I want, but for those of you who aren’t -- remember to put anything truly compromising/NSFW under cut!  <3<3<3

[livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is a community that dedicates a fortnight to celebrating female characters. I didn’t get all my ducks in a row this year and I'm not as ready as I'd like to be.

I intended to make a post to celebrate all things Natasha Romanoff (movie canon) and I have about a half-dozen gen or Natasha-centric fic recs but I would love more of your favourites. I would also love any meta people have written that I can link to (or quote, with your permission).

WHY NATASHA IS IMPORTANT )

So send me links to your Natasha-love! Meta, speculation, fic recs is all welcome and I will do my best to properly attribute everything to it's source.

Oh, and check out [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon if you have the time!

[Mods, let me know if you want me to edit the tags for this post, I wasn't sure what to use]

Welcome to another All The Things Friday! Your co-hosts this week are [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices and [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73.

First off, a note to say we have a thread at the top of this post for signing up to host, co-host, and/or to suggest themes for future All The Things Fridays. At the moment we have [livejournal.com profile] jacedesbff for February 1st and [livejournal.com profile] noblealice for February 8th (not sure what topics you folks are going with?) so raise your hands and bring your ideas :D

The theme for today, though, is a three part rec extravaganza. You can do one, two, or all three, or just join in the chatter!

1) rec a newcomer’s or underappreciated story (or artwork, or creative work) that you feel deserves some love.

2) tell us the first thing that you wrote/made in this fandom. (We’re thinking of doing a list of people’s first works that newcomers can add to, kind of a first time not-necessarily-rec list thing, so we can use these to kick off that list. You can tell us your first thing and then tell us that you don’t want it on the list though if you like.)

3) rec something you wrote/made in this fandom that you’re most proud of, or that’s your favourite.

Discussion Ideas: how have your thinky thoughts or creative leanings changed since that first thing you wrote/made? How far have we come since the film was released? What is it about the shiny new things coming through that are different, that have changed your thinking?

my three things behind the cut )

What’re your three things for this Friday?

And a few things to keep in mind:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment has is graphic/images/gif heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

So I noticed the other day that another community did awards, like fanfic awards, and best art awards, and stuff like that. It seemed like a great way to celebrate some of the amazing stuff that's posted on this community. I was just curious if there's something similar here, and if not, was it something people would be interested in?

EDIT: Maybe we could do like an epic bookmark thing instead? Everyone goes through favorite fics till we have like the biggest rec list ever from every category, including art. Then it's not a competition?
