Craft magic/magical realism AU: whatever you make, you give a piece of yourself to it. (A desire to protect, or calm, weigh less...?) The better the practitioner, the stronger and more specific the magic. But you have to learn how to make/craft something first. It takes time and practise, as well as skill. It doesn’t matter how good you are at magic, you have to master your craft first.
