Question For My Lovelies...

So I noticed the other day that another community did awards, like fanfic awards, and best art awards, and stuff like that. It seemed like a great way to celebrate some of the amazing stuff that's posted on this community. I was just curious if there's something similar here, and if not, was it something people would be interested in?

EDIT: Maybe we could do like an epic bookmark thing instead? Everyone goes through favorite fics till we have like the biggest rec list ever from every category, including art. Then it's not a competition?

UUUH! I WANT IN!!!!!!!

*coughs* ... *composes herself* OK, so, what I meant to say is - just the other day I was thinking about this! About how, considering how prolific AND talented everyone is around here, wouldn't it be fun to celebrate it? Also to highlight other stories maybe, not from here in the comm and ... well, just ... ANOTHER reason to go mental and celebrate ;) Who needs an excuse for a party, eh?

So, uhm, if people want it and if you were looking, I would LOVE to help organise it *happy grin*

A non community category would be good- that way we can get some of the stuff from ff and Ao3 that didn't make its way here.

On the other hand, it could get political and icky, like I've seen some fandoms get (which is why I left fandom until I was lured back by y'all :P). But I'm pretty sure this bar would manage to do well.

That was exactly what I was thinking :) I always look forward to non-community recs, but I am a bit apprehensive about awards due to the reasons you just put forth.

I also think this bar would manage, but I am not really sure we need this :)

Oh I know what you mean, about the ickiness .. (fandom, you can be a cruel mistress ...) but we are, in general, not a group that is prone to headless screaming matches or disagreements, so I do think it would be alright :)

tbh though, I've also seen a lot of fandoms where it does work. The Draco/Ginny fans of the HP fandom have been doing it for years and there was never any trouble and the same goes for the Castle fandom (which has problems elsewhere, mind) and it's always been fun and also sort of exciting and thrilling.

It would be a lot of fun if done right, as long as some thought is put into how to structure it (i.e. anonymous voting, only five or so categories so you don't feel bad one of your fics didn't get it, a general community award for being the bet bar... idk).

Good point about the other fandoms that do it right. I guess if you model the thing after theirs it would work out alright. Especially considering how we're the best bar :P

I think it could be a lot of fun, but to avoid getting political (which I do see happen in a lot of fandoms), you'd need a clear schedule, a way of nominating and voting that can't be tampered with, and a lot of categories. I mean, sure, there are heavy-hitting awards like "Best fic" and "Best author," but I think it's more fun if there are categories like, "best AU," "most creative Budapest," "best Clint backstory," etc. And having each of the categories be named something different is always fun (The Virginia "Pepper" Potts Award for Best Banter, The Howard Stark Memorial Award for Best Innuendo (Fondue?)), too.

Well, if there are a few people worried, there is of course the option of maybe making like ... a sister community to this one just for the awards. So it's easier for people that don't wanna be involved to not have it in their face all the time? No idea, just a thought I just had.

Uuuuh, loving this! The whole having categories that aren't, well "average". And, yes, clear schedule and voting system are an absolute must!

[identity profile] shenshen77.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No doubt, if done right it would be really cool and fun :) So a good structure is key, absolutely agree with you there.

I'LL DRINK TO THAT *lifts her pint*

[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. Plus I don't think we're immature enough to get into catfights like a bunch of 14 year old Beliebers :P

I guess I thought only a few categories would be simpler, but that actually sounds really fun. What would we name the best kidfic category?

[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Also - WTH IS YOUR ICON *has a giggle fit*

[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds overly complicated. I mean, as with any fandom, you can always scroll past the things you don't like...

[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
gnaaah, suddenly I really want these awards xD I always love scrolling and reading all the fics people nominate *_*

Also true ... just snowballing it out ;)

I am going to be the dubious one and vote for 'could we please not?'

Awards get competitive, and for those of us who aren't as popular as the in-crowd (and honestly for those of us who have things like anxiety and shyness) having an official award can rapidly just turn into a bunch of stress and not be any fun at all.

If we must, could we do things like people can only win one? Nominated for multiple sure, but you can only one win so it's more in the nature of being fun and celebratory rather an a clear competition for 'the best'.
