01 July 2020 @ 11:01 am

Thank you to everyone who filled out the poll with your availability! The time at which most people are available is Sunday, July 5 at 11 AM ET (click here to find out what time that is for you!) Location: the Be Compromised discord!

If this isn’t time that works for you, we’re so sorry to miss you! I hope (a) we can have another of these events, and (b) that you’re able to drop by the discord chat room anytime and say hi! So far, we’ve had lots of fun conversations about pretty much anything whenever our various time zones align 😊 Please do join in any time!

So, how to prepare:

  1. If you haven’t already, join the discord! Directions can be found here.
  2. Bring all the questions you’ve always wanted to ask during a meet-up! Fannish or not, it’s up to you!
  3. GET EXCITED!

26 June 2020 @ 10:12 am
 Illustrious bar members!

It’s so exciting to see that so many people are interested in a virtual meet-up! It seems we’re all in agreement that a video chat is going to a hair-raising horror (ha!), so let’s meet in a good old fashioned chat room and party like it’s 1999!

IMPORTANT THINGS:

  1. We need to figure out a time and date! It is extremely cool to have an international bar, but that also means finding a good time for everyone takes a little finagling. Please fill out this doodle poll to indicate availability for July 1-7. (If you’ve never used this before, you just enter your name/username and then click whichever times work for you! They should show up in your timezone.) If none of these times work for you, say so below!
  2. I’d recommend Discord for this meet-up: it has audio features and a better text chat functionality than Google or Zoom could provide. [personal profile] alistra  and I have been hanging out there this week! 😊 If you’ve never used Discord, it’s fairly straightforward. You can find instructions on how to join and use our be_compromised Discord here. If using Discord is a dealbreaker for you, please say so and we can work together!
Questions? Suggestions? Excitement? Share in the comments!!

Thank you for all your ideas and feedback! If there's anything else that you'd be interested in doing or that you've spotted in the wider world that you think looks exiciting please let us know in the comments :)

03 March 2020 @ 04:35 pm
Hi All, we hope you enjoyed the Valetine's Mini Promptathon! The next big events we have in the calendar are THE BLACK WIDOW FILM in May, the comm annibirthday also in May, and the big summer promptathon. Until then the comm is looking a little quiet so we're asking you: what would you like to see here in the next few months?

Past events have included an AU exchange, a hometown fic challenge, a remix exchange, last year's Fix-It Fest, and smaller events like recathons, unfinished fic and writing chats, three sentence prompts... and as ever we're open to new ideas!

Comment with what you'd like to see. Comment to other people's ideas so we can see what's popular. Comment with things from the wider world wide web relevant to our interests. Help us to keep our little corner of the fandom lively!

Thanks as always to everyone posting recs, fics, art, and fun things here and to the tumblr. Sharing is caring and keeps the fandom going :)

02 January 2020 @ 07:02 pm
Hello people of the best bar and welcome to 2020! As has become traditionally, to start the new year on a positive note we're kicking off with things we're looking forward to this year.

2020 is the year we finally get a Black Widow movie (!!!), plus The Eternals, there's a new Hawkeye comic out this week (Hawkeye: Freefall) that's getting cracking reviews, and that's just in the Marvel corner of the big wide world. What are you looking forward to in 2020? Do you have any fics, fanvids, or other creative works you hope to start/progress/finish this year? (Can we have a sneak peak?) Have you made any new year’s resolutions? What films/books/tv shows are coming out this year that you’re excited about? Let’s have a chat about good things!

We love Clint/&Natasha, but also all things Marvel, AND things outside of Marvel, so feel free to share wider interests. Maybe you'll spread the excitement to someone else who'll find a new favourite thing!

And never posted before? Come join in! New year is a great time to welcome new people :)

How to play: share some things you're looking to in 2020 in a comment to this post to get chatting. If you'd like, copy and paste the contents of the text below to give you some ideas:

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

IT IS TIME.

This is your place to chat and squee about Avengers Endgame! Pease note: UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THIS FILM CAN BE DISCUSSED ON BE_COMPROMISED. You know the drill, spoilers are mean.

A few rules:

1) Do understand that this post will be FULL of spoilers in the comments. If you are absolutely against being spoiled then please avoid this post until you've seen the film. It's okay, you can post here whenever you watch the film and keep it active, so you won't be missing out. There is no end date to the squee!

(For people who would like only certain spoilers ie for things you might be anxious about or if you're not able to see it for a while, but don't want allll the spoilers of this post feel free to send me a DM.)

2) Character bashing and ship wars are assassinable offences. We love differences in opinion and discussing all the things, but we also want to keep this bar a positive fandom space. If you think someone might be hurt by something you're about to say then either don't say it or find a better way of putting it. Please keep in mind that we are about the love.

3) HAVE FUN!

09 March 2019 @ 12:38 am
Happy Friday, International Women's Day, and CAPTAIN MARVEL DAY!

We interupt our usual ATTF programming to bring you a place to chat and squee about the latest installment in the MCU. Only this post will stay live for longer than a week - please note: UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED (AFTER THE MOVIE HAS BEEN RELEASED WORLDWIDE) THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THIS FILM CAN BE DISCUSSED ON BE_COMPROMISED. You know the drill, spoilers are not fun.

A few rules:

1) Do understand that this post will be FULL of spoilers in the comments. If you are absolutely against being spoiled then please avoid this post until you've seen the film. It's okay, you can post here whenever you watch the film and keep it active, so you won't be missing out. There is no end date to the squee.

18 January 2019 @ 09:31 pm
Happy Friday All!

We're going with more of a creative support group theme for this week's ATTF, talking about titles and summaries.

When do you decide on the title for a fic? Do you usually know at the start and build the fic around the title, or are you the kind of person who scrambles to find one after the fic is complete? How do you chose your titles or get inspiration for them? Capitals or lower case? What’s your favourite title that you’ve come up with?

What about other people’s titles, are there any that you especially like or that grabbed your attention? Are there any film, book etc titles that got you interested?

Summaries - how do you write them? Do you try to sum up the whole fic, or the general vibe? 'To quote or not to quote' something from the fic itself?

And not to leave out our artists and other creative types, how do you name your art/vid/fanmixes/creations? Do you caption it, or let it speak for itself?

Bonus: if you'd like to play, comment with ASK ME and a link to where people can find your creative works. People will then reply with one of your titles or summaries. Reply with where that title/summary idea came from, why you chose it, and your thinky thoughts!

Go here to suggest ideas for future ATTFs or sign up to host.

11 January 2019 @ 10:48 pm
First ATTF of the year! Relevant to your interests: we have a new sign up post for 2019 here, also asking for suggestions on how we can liven things up. For this week though, let's talk about:

What To Do When You've Seen Those Few Clint And Nat Moments In The Endgame Trailer, And Suddenly You Need More In Your Life Again, But Endgame Is Not Until APRIL.

Yeah. That.

Are you revisiting old fics? Desperately searching for new ones? Exploring other corners of Marvel (or other fandoms)? Got any recs?

Perhaps you're racing to finish a fic before you get jossed, or suddenly fired up to write Marvel fic again, create icons/graphics again, or re-read your favourite comics/graphic novels? Which ones are your favourites?

Or perhaps you have other countdown coping methods?

Let us know, folks of the bar, because we're all in this boat together :)

Hello people of the best bar and welcome to 2019! (Well, in about an hour and a half in my part of the world.) We’re kicking things off with a New Year’s Party chatting about the things we’re looking forward to this year.

2019 is the year of Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame (!!!), and Spider-Man: Far From Home, but other than that - what are you looking forward to in 2019? Do you have any fics, fanvids, or other creative works you hope to start/progress/finish this year? (Can we have a sneak peak?) Have you made any new year’s resolutions? What films/books/tv shows are coming out this year that you’re excited about? Let’s have a chat about good things!

And this comm may be THE place to hang out in Clint/&Natasha corner of the fandom *grins* but we ALSO love the rest of the Marvel universe and - strange but true - also things other than Marvel. So do tell us about things in the wider world that you’re excited about as well. Maybe you’ll spread the excitement to someone else who’ll find a new favourite thing!

And never posted before? Come join in! New year is a great time to welcome new people :)

Hi everyone,

Would people be interested in setting up/participating a be_compromised chatroom? I've recently signed up for the Marvel Bang and I've enjoyed being able to interact with people through their Discord server, which enables you to attach files, send emoji, and stuff like that in a chatroom setting. I theorize that we could use this to find cheerleaders/betas and maybe post prompts outside of prompt-a-thons? And potentially other things, too, I guess!? Anyway, I've run it by the mods and I'm willing to run/organize a Discord or something along those lines if people are interested, so I'm just throwing it out there! Happy end of June :)

So *takes a deep breath* it is time. THIS is your dedicated space for all things Avengers: Infinity War.

Bring your squee, meta, pics, all the things! As always, please note: UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED (AFTER THE MOVIE HAS BEEN RELEASED WORLDWIDE) THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THIS FILM CAN BE DISCUSSED ON BE_COMPROMISED. You know the drill, spoilers are not fun.

4) HAVE FUN!

HELLO BEST BAR. New Year, New Excitements, New Frustrations, NEW MOD (HELLO!)

Yes, ‘tis I, your new mod, kicking off [community profile] be_compromised 2018 ATTF with: THINGS WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2018.

2018 has to be better than 2017 right? I mean, for one, we’re getting Black Panther this February which obviously makes this February better than last, right? And this is also the year of Infinity War and Bearded Cap (!!!).

But other than that, what are you looking forward to? Do you have any fics, fanvids, or other creative works you hope to start/progress/finish this year? (Can we have a sneak peek?) Have you made any new year's resolutions? What films/books/TV shows are coming out this year that you're excited about?

Let's have a chat about good things! And I know that this is a Clint/&Natasha comm but we’re all friends here right? Branch out! Is there a non-Marvel film that you’re stoked for? (They do exist: strange but true!) Excited for a book that’s being released this year? Tell us about it! Maybe someone else is excited about it too. (I, for one, am excited about Nick Hawkaway’s Gnomon being released in paperback this year so I can finally read it.)

How to play: copy and paste the contents of the text box below into a comment and fill in the answers, then have a chat with people about the great things 2018 has in store.

This Friday let's have a chat about all the things we'd love some help with when it comes to creating fanfic (and other works) and help we might be able to offer. One of the great things about fandom is how it's a hive of creativity :)

Back in 2012 we had a useful discussion about beta reading that led to a a beta directory being created. It's now out of date! Plus as well as beta reading there's a lot of other help available in this bar that it'd be good to share. And what better time than when we're in the middle of creating for Secret Santa? (And NaNoWriMo for some productive people!)

Step One - Discuss all things creative support on this post

Need a beta reader? Got questions about how to approach someone?
Stuck on a plot point? Want someone you can talk through ideas with?
Looking for someone to translate into a different language?
Not sure about writing a fight scene or a sex scene?
Need a cheerleader to help you meet a deadline?
Want to fact check something technical or medical or historical?
Want to talk about disabilities (ie. deaf Clint) or putting diversity in creative works?
Need other creative support help that you've just not been able to find?
Just want to talk about creating?!

2. Sign up to offer creative support help on this new Creative Support Directory !

Go!

Hey Best Bar!

A while back I got some really great advice on how overcome the over-editing monster. I have a follow up question to that point. When do you guys edit multiple chapter fics? At the end of each chapter or at the very end of the story? I took a leap and entered into this years Marvelbigbang. I'm doing pretty good at not editing while actively writing. But I'm close to being finished with chapter one hence the question. Personally I feel that if I wait until the end of the novella I'll be too far removed from chapter one. Anyway, I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Thanks all!

Happy Friday people of the bar! It's that ATTF time again :)

This week is all about the PLACES in the Marvel universe. From New York to Budapest, Sokovia to Kathmandu, Siberia to Wakanda, Earth to the rest of the Galaxy... we're seeing more and more of the Marvel universe. This week we're going to explore!

> What are your thoughts/headcanons about the places we've been introduced to?
> Share your favourite screenshots, fun facts, any interesting about places in the Marvel universe, or that you've been to, would love to go to...anywhere!
> Share your headcanons about the places that our favourite assassins have been to, for missions or for fun.
> What characters would you like to send where?
- How do you go about embedding your fic/creative work in a particular location and bringing that place to life?
> Rec creative works set around the world or ones where you think a sense of place was really well done

Welcome to your weekend getaway :)

For those who might not be aware, since the start of 2017 there have been changes to Livejournal with servers moving to Russia and, most recently, a change in LJ Terms & Conditions.  We would like to share with you some of our thoughts on this and then we would like the community's input, with a view to possibly making some changes. Your mods may be manning the bar, but without all of YOU there is no community. Your views are important so please do comment after reading. Thank you.

Please be aware that your mods are nowhere near the likes of Tony Stark in technical knowledge and futurist thinking, however: never asumme that information you post on any social media is entirely private. Social media companies hold the rights to your information (see: instagram owns all your photos, see: you can never completely delete your Facebook). In addition, unless you are very, very good there will be someone better than you who can crack your security; we can take precautions but we are not immune. This has not changed with LJ. It's just that instead of LJ being in Trump's America it's now in Putin's Russia. Your opinions on those administrations and on your online rights associated with companies located within them are your own.

Our Position: Your mods are not panicking, but we are wary of these changes. They do not at first glance impact the main activities of this community - a main change in the T&Cs concerns politics for example - but with things such as this and Russia's LBGTQ rights record we are wary. We also, of course, have to take into account our members. If the majority of you move elsewhere then it would make sense for the community to follow the community.

Dreamwidth: An alternate social media site that we could host the community on is Dreamwidth. It is relatively easy to import a community there from LJ. There are pros and cons to Dreamwidth vs LJ and these are different for personal journals and communities. KEY POINTS: we could import the entire community including all of the comments to Dreamwidth. You can't crosspost on communities and future comments would not crosspost, although we could re-import the community on a semi-regular basis. Dreamwidth has an OpenID log in system so that you can comment there using an LJ, and other, online identities - you do NOT have to have a personal Dreamwidth account to post to a Dreamwidth community (although it makes it easier). None of your mods are familiar with Dreamwidth and there may be stumbling blocks that we wouldn't know about until we trip over them.

Options under consideration:

1) We keep the community on LJ. We back it up on Dreamwidth and re-import to Dreamwidth on a semi-regular basis to keep it current. We do not moderate or use the Dreamwidth version. It remains inactive unless needed in the future.

2) We keep the LJ community AND have a Dreamwidth community. How this would work: we re-import semi-regularly to Dreamwidth, we comment on both, we moderate both, we keep both active. Dreamwidth would have BOTH LJ and Dreamwidth posts. LJ would just have LJ posts. Dreamwidth would (hopefully) end up with the comments from both. LJ would just have LJ comments.

3) We move the community to Dreamwidth and maintain a presence on LJ. Dreamwidth would be the main community but monthly/ on a semi-regular basis we would post a summary post to LJ with links to Dreamwidth posts and activity, so people on LJ would know what was going on and could either comment/chat on LJ or use OpenID to comment on Dreamwidth.

4) We move to Dreamwidth completely. We archive the LJ version and don't use it at all.

For easy commenting you can copy and paste the following. Or you can just comment with whatever you think about all of this. The important thing is that we have a discussion as a community, so please do comment. There is no deadline for this post and we open to changing our minds (again) in the future. However, if you could comment before MONDAY 17th APRIL that would be helpful.

PLEASE NOTE: please be respectful of other people's opinions, emotions, and countries. Think debate, not argument. Thank you.

This weekend let’s talk about titles!

When do you decide on the title for a fic? Do you usually know at the start and build the fic around the title, or are you the kind of person who scrambles to find one after the fic is complete? How do you chose your titles or get inspiration for them? Capitals or lower case? What’s your favourite title that you’ve come up with? Artists, how do you name your art?

What about other people’s titles, are there any that you especially like or that grabbed your attention? Are there any film, book etc titles that got you interested?

In today's ATTF:

a) post a comment chatting about any or all of the above. Let's have some conversations!

b) here's a thing that I found with a 'twenty titles for a writer' exercise. Pick one of your fics/peices of art/vids etc - either finished and already posted, or something new that you're working on - and have a go at this exercise. Post the results in a comment. Everyone else, which titles do you think work best?

Artists: here's an art of the title selection that's fun! Maybe pick a title - even a title from this weekend's ATTF - and play around with how you could make it look?

c) comment with ASK ME and a link to where people can find your creative works. People will then reply with one/some of your titles. Reply with where that title came from, why you chose it, your thoughts behind it.

d) ALL THE THINGS! This is, after all, entitled All The Things Friday ;)

You can sign up to host an ATTF, suggest ideas for future ATTFs, and see what's coming up in ATTFs HERE

Hello, hello, hello and HELLO 2017! It's a brand new year, which means we're kickstarting All The Things Friday again and with a 'things we're looking forward to in 2017' edition.

Do you have any fics, fanvids, or other creative works you hope to start/progress/finish this year? (Can we have a sneak peak?) Have you made any new year's resolutions? What films/books/tv shows are coming out this year that you're excited about? Let's have a chat about good things!

Hello honorable comrades, and welcome to the latest All the Things Friday! I'll be your host this week, sort of. More on that in a minute. If you want to be a host for a future ATTF, go to this page and check out the info!

Firstly, credit to [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices and [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73, who masterminded the ATTF I'm mostly copy-pasting for this one. They ran a really successful and super fun Friday a few years back, so here's to hoping that spirit will return, and shower us with loads of great fanworks, just in time to procrastinate all out holiday exchange fics :))) not that I'm speaking personally or anything, and/or cushion the blow of November holidays with relatives. One would hope.

There are three parts to this ATTF challenge/game. If you'd like to participate, you can choose any or all of the options, or just sit back and glut! :D

1. Rec a fanwork (fic, art, podfic, graphics, mural graffitied on a wall in town, etc.) by a fandom newcomer, or just an underappreciated work that you feel deserves some love.

2) Tell us the first thing that you wrote/made in this fandom. How did you get into it, what was the inspiration, was it hard to do? What do you think about it now, either in content or composition? Tell the story of your story! Link if you're brave enough :D

3) Rec something you wrote/made in this fandom that you’re most proud of, or that’s your favourite.

Discussion Ideas: How have your thinky thoughts or creative leanings changed since that first thing you wrote/made? How far have we come since the film was released? What is it about the shiny new things coming through that are different, that have changed your thinking?

We've had a few good recs and discussions on this community lately, but with the way the movies, comics, and, basically, 2016, I think it'll do us some good to harken back to the golden days. Maybe it'll give us some inspiration for the future. <3

What are your three things for this Friday?

And a few things to keep in mind:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment has is graphic/images/gif heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)
