Question For My Lovelies...

So I noticed the other day that another community did awards, like fanfic awards, and best art awards, and stuff like that. It seemed like a great way to celebrate some of the amazing stuff that's posted on this community. I was just curious if there's something similar here, and if not, was it something people would be interested in?

EDIT: Maybe we could do like an epic bookmark thing instead? Everyone goes through favorite fics till we have like the biggest rec list ever from every category, including art. Then it's not a competition?

Yeah, I think that might be a better idea for another comm, so as to not flood this one (not that I'm aware of what it's in it, but the Secret Santa diiiid flood comm and flists for several weeks; and last-writer-standing makes me wary, but more to the power of those who want to join in) and it'd be easier for organizational purposes.

What a wonderful idea! <3 Now I'm thinking gateway drugs ;) Because this place sure is addictive :D

Hmm, could do a post where we ask people to comment with their first fics in this fandom, to kick things off and encourage people to join in, and then make those fics into a post, and then every time someone writes a first fic encourage them to say or comment on that post and then add it to the post at the top? So everyone gets to be at the top at some point, and we get like a newest to oldest of first fics? As in ask people rather than stalk them?

Or where you thinking of a first writers rec list type thing? Although I still love the idea of an all the things friday for new and underappreciated fics and arts and works.

*is thinky*

If this means I'm on the bus to the special hell, I'm definitely gonna enjoy the ride - YEEHA! ;)

... hmm. also a posibility ... have to admit though - I LOVE PROMPTATHONS *coughs* always wanted to run one and now mamma has her chance XD

But obviously not if it's not wanted :)

On the other hand, I am pretty sure we could include the grid thing into the april event treasure hunt thing ... or ... I dunno ... don't wanna squash your idea :/

Woohoo, I'm right beside you on THAT bus!!!

You mean like an intro guide? I've seen those for other fandoms and ships. I don't know...I love rec lists, but I wouldn't say we had 'seminal' fics around her and it can restrict ideas to kind of...channel? everyone into the same mode of thinking or handcanon. We do have a guide to how the tags and tagging works - see sidebar *grins* - and the icons tag is handy. There was that post about doing better searches on AO3 and we do only have affliate...maybe we could do something on this is this comm, here are how the tags work, you can find icons under the icons tag and here are a few other comms that do icons, and here are some links to places for you to poe around, that kind of thing?

But like I said, I wouldn't want it to stiffle creativity. Some big pairings that I looked at those kinds of guides for I felt...like everyone had already been done? Or there was only one way for things to go? I dunno, just a bit stiffled. (I did not join those parades.)

As someone that recently joined the comm yourself, what did you think was missing? I know we're welcoming, but I guess we don't exactly have a 'start here' sign up. ...?

Friday Posts

[personal profile] ashen_key 2013-01-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey guys!

Just a quick request - there has been a lot of 'we'll put this in the Friday posts' going around re: various suggestions, which is great!

But could we all (as per the mod post a few days ago) remember to warn and rate for things in the Friday posts? Including graphics? That makes them safer and way more inclusive than just a happy free-for-all for those who don't have triggers or things that trip them up.

(re: graphics, one way might be to put them all in one thread, or spoiler-cut them - this also helps those of us who don't have fast, cheap internets)

[identity profile] im-ridiculous.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's a great idea, an epic 'gateway fics' list that marked the beginning of each of our slide down the slippery c/n slope :)

[personal profile] inkvoices 2013-01-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So maybe a few all the things ideas:

1) underappreciated and/or new fics, arts, and works
2) first fic you wrote in this fandom/first fic read
3) rec one thing from yourself and why

Or instead of or as well as 2a the idea of a first fics list?

[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have a chat/email with the mods and maybe do a more obvious post asking what people want or something in the next few days? How about that?

We have always encouraged warnings for the all the things posts - it was even on the profile page until it was replaced with a link for the general rules post - and it is, of course, now a rule to always warn. This being the best bar, I'm sure everyone will endeavor to play nice :)

[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it wasn't so much about the comm missing something, it was just more about the typical "uh, new fandom, how does it work? what is allowed?" type feelings. And as someone who had, at that point, only seen the film and new nothing about the comic-verse, that was what threw me the most. I didn't know where to really start, because the whole comic-verse seems (and is ;)) so vast and limitless, it can be quite intimidating.

And I didn't know how this comm in particular handled it. Like ... is this just movies, just comics? what are is generally ok to mix/use, what isn't? Sort of ... the cultural habits of the comm/ship so to speak ;) Might be just me, but I like to know those types of things first, before I start to really get involved. Speak the lingo of the comm/ship so to speak.

I mean, it became clear quite quickly how it all works, but then I kinda just THREW myself in there, posting a big-ol HELLO post and getting lots of info through that. But for someone that doesn't just shamelessly decide to post in a comm they joined 5 seconds ago ...? Might be helpful if they had like some pointers about those sorts of things?

And about the other links in the sidebar and stuff ... I am horrible when it comes to that. I never see/find them. Don't ask me why *shakes head at self* I need a sort of big neon sign saying READ THIS BLOODY POST WOMAN, IT HAS ANSWERS!

This is my feeling re: newbie guides as well. If people go YOU MUST READ 'WE WERE EMERGENCIES' AND THIS META ABOUT ULTRA-MASCULINE AND ULTRA-FEMININE TROPES AND NATASHA MUST BE RED ROOM then that's....sending a message that you MUST like something, and you MUST read the characters one way, or else you aren't welcome.

And that'd be sad.

Ash's being sweet enough to post on my behalf, because people don't follow that rule and I have been triggered multiple times and no longer frequent the all-things-friday post (except when Ash has already been through it and given me the headsup on whcih threads are too dangerous for me).

There are NSFW and triggery fics, gifsets, and picspams posted without warnings and outside of cuts. I know it's funtimes, and the rule's always existed... but people aren't doing it. People often don't mentioned they're triggered by a thread or a post, because they're too busy being triggered to reply, and later too afraid of being re-triggered to try to find it.

The promptathon was so huge and so much fun I'm sure it's on all our minds to play again. We wouldn't want too much epic awesome all the time though - tire us all out lol. I barely recovered from promptathon in time for Secret Santa, which I still haven't read everything from, and then there's all the little challanges like hometown that I haven't played in, and, and...

...which is to say I'm stalking this post and gathering intel and do let us know all ideas, but I don't know if we're gonna do something so huge every other month lol.

Depending on what you're thinking of depends on how much oragnisation it needs. An exchange, for instances, takes a lot of run-up preparation, time for writing, then posting has to happen, de-anoning, and masterlists. The promptathon was a a week to get prompts going, then masterlists, and [livejournal.com profile] allisnow, wonderfuly person, catalogued all the prompts. Challenges can just be issued and entries collected. Commentathons happen in one thread. So I guess I'm asking, what type of system is on your mind?

Not a wet blanket :) I know you, and others, have mentioned it to me before and we try, but we don't always catch everything. We're hoping the new rules post helps. I know that people can't always raise issues when triggered, but it does have in there to contact a mod or the author if something is..suspect which will hopefully help as well *crosses fingers and toes*. I was just trying to add that I have high hopes for people being wonderful :)

And not to repeat [livejournal.com profile] dictator_duck, but when things get gif-and-picture-heavy, I can't load the page. Or if I can, it wastes a lot of my very limited, very slow, very expensive internet. If people had more awareness of things like different internet usage internationally, that'd also be fabulous.

Otherwise, I just can't load the all things friday page, and that's not exactly being very inclusive.

I have been sucked into living on this post tonight *grins* so I'm gathering intel and taking notes. What helps? I know just starting an image thread doesn't always, because until there are lots of comments to that thread the first few entries to it load anyway. Can people do lj-cuts in comments? Suggestions?
