The Good Ship C/N Promptathon
of Magic and Joy:
Aka, The Promptathon of All Wonderful Things Involving Two Certain Badass Assassin People Doing Badass Things and Being Awesome. And Badass. And Pretty. And Stuff.

NOTE: The promptathon has now closed, but please enjoy all the lovely fic and fanworks. in our Masterposts below.

Master List of all Promptathon fanworks.

Master List, Part 2 now with more delicious everything!

**Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rayruzfor the beautiful graphic.

******************

NOTE: PROMPTING HAS NOW CLOSED, BUT FICS AND FANWORKS MAY STILL BE SUBMITTED THROUGH AUGUST 31ST. THANKS!

Welcome!!!! The time is now upon us. This will kick off a month's worth of prompting and fanworking and all the good things. Not sure what to do? Click below for our handy-dandy Promptathon Guide!

RULES ON POSTING SUBMISSIONS
(please read before you post! <3)

The Rules.  Just follow these three easy steps!

1. Leave a Prompt.

Prompts can be anything--simple or elaborate, words or pictures, songs or poems, lyrics or phrases. Anything that, to you, inspires a C/N fanwork. Use your imagination. Go crazy. All I ask is that you keep it tasteful and warn for anything explicit or triggery. Also, try to be as specific as you can with your prompts--this is often very helpful to those creating the fanwork.

And leave as many prompts as you want. I’m serious. Keep coming back, y’all. We want all the prompts we can possibly get Also, be sure to leave each prompt as a separate comment.

2. Wait a week.
Tailgate and chitchat and keep leaving prompts. And mull over the epic fanworks you are creating.

3. Submit C/N fanwork like there is no tomorrow.
All submissions should either be posted here or linked to this post via a comment. The nitty gritty details of posting your stuff can be found HERE. Please read before you post

Timeframe:
Prompts will be accepted starting today, Friday, July 13th (!!!) and will remain open until Friday, August 10th.  Submissions may be submitted beginning on Friday, July 20th and may continue to be submitted until August 10th.

What we hope to accomplish with all this promptathon-iness:

  • A chance to get in the game. Been wanting to jump into the C/N fanwork scene but not sure where to start? Now’s the time. There’s no length requirement on the works submitted, you can focus on drabbles and vidlets and short and sweet projects (or do longer more epic stuff if that strikes your fancy as well).  It’s really entirely up to you. We’re just hoping to provide a fun, no-pressure environment.
  • Meet new and awesome people. Because srsly, I love everyone in this bar. It's a good damn bar. Don't be afraid to say hello
  • Ship like you’ve never shipped before.
  • Tailgate when appropriate. My motto is, if something ain’t a cocktail party, you just aren’t trying hard enough. In that spirit, [livejournal.com profile] aurora_0811and I are hosting the tailgate section (which I think at this point just includes random chatter and ridiculousness, cheerleading and tomfoolery, because I doubt our comm’s talkative nature will be suppressed even during the prompting/waiting period.) So pull up a helicarrier-shaped lawnchair, crack open a cold one and settle in for the festivities. And leave prompts.

And most of all, have fun. :)

FIC: Better Safe (G)

[personal profile] ashen_key 2012-07-22 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
A/N: "Vanya" is the diminutive for Ivan, which is the Russian form of John.

“Mama?”

Natasha looks up to find her six-year-old son hovering in the doorway with an oddly nervous expression on his face.

“Yes? What's up?” she asks in Russian, as she normally does when speaking to him.

“Um,” John says, and twists his fingers in his dog's ruff. The dog – an overly excitable Australian Shepherd with clear direwolf in her heritage – tends to cling to John anyway once he's returned from school, but right now Frog is looking like back-up. Natasha is getting concerned. “Wehavetowriteareportonyouand-”

“Vanya, spaces between the words.”

John takes a deep breath. “We have to write a report on what mommy and daddy's jobs are.”

“Ah.”

“I told Ms Hart that I wasn't allowed!”

John's green eyes are wide and he's looking so earnestly upset that Natasha has to clamp down on the urge to either crack a smile or facepalm.

At least he knows how important Not Telling is.

“I'm sure you did,” is what she says. “But it's for homework, so we'll have to think of something.”

His expression shifts, turning speculative. “Am I really not allowed to tell that you stop bad guys?”

...Or maybe he doesn't know, if he's trying to get around it. “No, you're not allowed.”

“But it's interesting.

“Mmm. Interesting isn't good.”

“But daddy's boring.

Ah, the contempt of familiarity at the stay-at-home parent. “Daddy has a bow, that's not boring, is it? And he helps teach people at my work, now that you're at school. And...why don't you go and get your homework book, and let's work it. Okay?”

“But why-”

“John,” she says, and she so rarely calls him John that he stops and looks at her. “You know why. It's safer. For us, and for Frog.” Frog, hearing her name, pricks her ears and tilts her head before licking John's fingers. “So. Go get your homework book, and we'll write the report. And then what do you say to making a chocolate cake?”

“Really?”

“Really. It'll be a surprise for daddy when he gets back. We can have sprinkles on it. But, only once we've written the report. Deal?”

“Deal,” he says, and then he runs off with Frog at his heels. Natasha waits until their feet hit the stairs before she pinches the bridge of her nose.

She knows the technical-truths to spin – she's a translator who has to travel a lot, Clint's a part-time security consultant – it's just that talking John into them is always stressful. All he knows is that her works involves stopping bad guys, but the explanation for the need for secrecy unfortunately is one that catches the imagination of a little boy.

Thank everything he still hasn't worked out who Steve, Tony, Bruce, and his parents' other friends are. Trying to get a six-year-old not to tell everyone that Captain America gave him a puppy would have been impossible.

Awwww, I love it, love it, love it. There's something so tender in this and it's really impact-full. Her vulnerability is especially well done because even vulnerable, she isn't powerless or weak in anyway.

Any chance it can be a longer fic? *Puppy dog eyes*

In my life, kudos (guest or otherwise) are every bit as much love as comments! I'm OCD girl so I love the stats feature on AO3 and I'm always comparing them (I have graphs of some of these new stories because, you know, they're getting more hits than some of the stuff I write in other fandoms) and it makes me all happy.

I think I've read five fics so far, where they're sharing baths and it's becoming my new thing for them :D I love the themes of reclaiming/remaking; it's just such huge theme and there can be tons of stories about it. :)

I think you chose a perfect style for this story! <3!

FIC: The Other Law We Live By (PG)

[personal profile] ashen_key 2012-07-22 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
They are sitting in a warehouse office, watching each other across the table. He's in his thirties, but only just, with too-short blond hair and prison tattoos dancing up his muscled arms. He's armed and nervous with it, fingers tapping the table like they need something to hold.

She is over a decade older but looks younger, a short and beautiful women with a serene poise. Her red hair is pinned up, and she's slung her jacket over the chair behind her, revealing her infamous gauntlets. She meets his gaze and says nothing long after social norms would dictate that someone speak.

He breaks.

“Look, this is bullshit,” he says in Russian, accent from the Ukraine border. “We didn't even know your kid was there.”

She raises one of her immaculately curved eyebrows, just a little. “So you're more incompetent than I first thought.” Her own accent still has traces of the Volga region where she was born, and her tone is pleasantly neutral. “How is this a defence?”

“We weren't even after him-”

“No. You were after Grace Lin, and so you threatened a class of eight-year-olds. That included my son. You understand how I can't let it slide. Don't you?”

He swallows, rolls his shoulder back, lets his gaze scuttle to the corners of the room before looking back at her. He can't look away for long.

“My boss promises that-”

“Where is he?”

“I, I am not-”

“Where is he?” Then she sighs. “I am not interested in killing you. You're an underling, you just follow orders. I don't waste my time with underlings. But if you do not cooperate, I'll make your death an example.”

He grins at her, all teeth and bravado. “Rumour is you're SHIELD now, Widow. That means that there are rules-”

“They aren't holding my leash right now." She smiles, slightly. "Answer the question, or I'll get creative.”

He stares at her, and she meets his gaze, forces his smile to buckle and vanish.

He spills.

*sniffles and hugs them both*

This is so lovely and utterly believeable. Wonderful sense of why it's all too much for Natasha and why she feels so exposed. And it ends with such a tender moment <3

Aww, poor kid! Having to deal with the complexities of his parents' jobs, not an easy task when it's Clint and Natasha.

I really like that Natasha speaks Russian to him, too :)

And Cap gave him a puppy! So cute!

Very nicely done :D

*hides from Natasha*

Brilliantly crafted scene, very vivid, makes it utterly clear how dangerous Natasha is. I would not want to be the one in that room with her!

Haha, love the different types of showers they go to. Very nice ;)

I think my favourite is number 4. It shows the trust that Clint has in Natasha so clearly, and her concern and support for him is lovely to read. They're all so lovely though, such different feels to each one!

Also, playfulness in the bath makes me grin :D

Fantastic! So many wonderfully funny moments I want to quote back at you, but the fic would just end up practically copied and pasted into the comment box ;)

Natasha and Tony sparring verbally is always fun to read; add that to the fact that they're talking about Natasha's and Clint's relationship, and it's just awesome.

Smiling at the last scene, lovely :)

Oh wow, so much intensity in this, it's really a wonderful read. They're so vulnerable around each other, so desperate for the other to accept them and love them, it's heartbreakingly tender. And on top of that, quietly but definitely sexy.

Love it <3

Noooope, not easy at all.

\o/ I have so many thoughts about Natasha and her use of Russian - my Natasha doesn't use it with Clint, doesn't casually slip into it, but she can reclaim it with her son. So, I'm really happy you liked that.

He did! I have a planned fic about it for one of the other prompts, it's just currently defeating me.

And thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it! Natasha naming herself just seemed to fit in this. I don't think it's canon but in my mind, if she'd remade herself, the name could quite logically be a big part of that. So I'm glad it works for you :)
