ATTF: Natasha Romanov Appreciation Day
So today was supposed to be the day our favourite ex-Russian spy got her own stand-alone film. But, because of Things, we'll have to wait until November 6th for that pleasure, so we decided that instead we'd have a Natasha Romanov Appreciation Day to celebrate everything Black Widow.

So! What was it that drew you to the character? What made you stick around? Did you first meet her in The Avengers (2012)? Or Tales of Suspense #52 (1964)? Was is Phil Noto's beautiful art that grabbed you in Black Widow (2014)? Or Kelly Sue DeConnick's interpretation for the Avengers comics in 2012? Or simply Scarlett Johansson kicking ass in Iron Man 2?
If you have favourite fanart, share it! (Tumblr links will get reblogged to our Tumblr so more people can find them) If you have a favourite fic, rec it! Have a headcanon? We're all ears! Was there something about her direction in the MCU that you were unsure of but turned out well, or was at least fixed by some excellent fan content? Or do you simply have Very Strong Opinions on what her best hairstyle is? We want to know all these things!
I've prepared some fill-in-the-blanks statements to get people started, but feel free to share whatever springs to mind! We're a friendly bunch and we love chatting about our faves. :D

(from here)
Please remember though, the rules of the comm apply.
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Why I love Natasha Romanov:
Because she is smart, competent, takes no shit from anyone, is her own woman, makes her decisions based on what's right not what makes her popular, and is a loyal and caring friend.
What first drew me to the character:
All of the above! Also, the offhanded way she dispatched those Russian goons and picked up her Louboutins. Sheer competence.
Favourite scene in the MCU:
Too many! All of them? She has my attention whenever she's on the screen.
Favourite look:
2012 shortish waves
Favourite fight scene:
Ironman 2, walking into the building. Especially that finish with the mace.
Favourite line:
Interrogations (Russian mob, Loki and Sitwell), followed by the 2012 2.0 background scene pouring a Scotch with Clint. Would have loved to see more of that (which I suppose is why I ficcified it in "Until".)
Favourite comic book appearance:
Noto!!!!
Favourite Clint/Natasha fic:
Oh, man. So many! One I always rec is Such Lost Creatures by lar_laughs, but also Indebted by sablier_bloque
Favourite alternate pairing fic:
Natasha/Maria, maybe? I dunno. I see her in a lot of friendship scenarios.

"I had nothing. Until I got this. This ... family." Straight in the feels, and the perfect end point of the arc she had over the years from "I have a very specific skill set - I didn't care who I used it on, or why".

Why I love Natasha Romanov:
Competent AND vulnerable AND beautiful AND badass. Shares the Avengers one brain cell with Rhodey. <3
What first drew me to the character:
She was so clearly intelligent, and I loved that there was no romantic plot for her, she was just allowed to be badass. Plus, she was allowed to be SCARED, and then she very visibly overcame that fear. I loved that.
Favourite scene in the MCU:
I still love her conversation with Clint after his cognitive recalibration. I maintain it's one of the best conversations in the entire MCU because it implies SO MANY THINGS without confirming anything.
Favourite look:
Age of Ulton. But c'mon, all looks are good looks for Natasha.
Favourite fight scene:
ALL OF THEM. I do particularly like "hello sailor" from Winter Soldier though.
Favourite line:
"I only pretend to know everything"
Favourite comic book appearance:
I've never really liked any of her solo outings. They're all very Batman-I-Am-The-Night and I just can't care about those kinds of characters. So my favourite Natasha's normally turn up in team comics. KSDs 2012 Avengers run had some great Natasha moments, and Ales Kot's Secret Avengers too, though that run is just generally great fun. In terms of art though? Yeah, Noto for sure.
Favourite Clint/Natasha fic:
How dare you make me pick. (A stupid complaint, I made these questions) UM. Okay I was going to be totally helpful and put a couple of quality fics from my bookmarks here, but then I realised no, the answer to this question is much easier than that. The answer to this is: anything written by gsparkle.
Favourite alternate pairing fic:
I don't really read much with Natasha and others but these two fics I LOVE.
>> Lady in Red by Not_You [ Natasha/Pepper, E, cntw ]
>> By Any Other Name by hailtherandom [ Natasha/Sam, E, cntw ]

And yes, the post-recalibration scene. I may have replayed this a few times, once I uploaded Avengers on my computer... *ahem*
I still consider it a crime against fandom that Whedon took all that chemistry, all that caring between these two, and blew it just because he felt like thwarting expectations. Or something.

Secret Avengers is so fucking good, I really need to re-read it...

I need to actually buy it... I think I read it as downloads or something? Need print versions.

What first drew me to the character: See above ramble. Also, right when I started overcoming that first wave of Dark Phoenix bitterness and begrudgingly started reading again, they were doing the first of the Winter Soldier run (when Bucky first came back from the dead) and she had a pretty decent role in that (though it was in support of the male character, sigh.) So I was primed for her in IM2.
Favourite scene in the MCU: So, this is weird, but that scene in Endgame, where she's sitting in the kitchen with her peanut butter sandwich and the hair she hasn't bothered to do anything to for the whole 5 years, methodically fueling her body so she can keep doing good things... I love that scene. Love it.
Favourite look: The loose, wavy curls at the end of IM2. Peak Natasha, imo. :D
Favourite fight scene: The matter-of-fact way she blew through the ship in The Winter Soldier.
Favourite line: "You know that I have." It's an entire backstory in 5 words. Or possibly "Thank you for your cooperation," which is fuck you, bitch, you only *think* you're a god.
Favourite comic book appearance: The Name of the Rose, by Marjorie Liu. So fucking good. Utterly lethal but still so very human. I maintain that every Natasha I've written starts with that as the base.
Favourite Clint/Natasha fic: Okay, for something I haven't talked about recently, let's go with Alliterative Domiciles, by
Favourite alternate pairing fic: I really love this: you're gonna give your love to me, by

Love your favourite lines.
Isn't it funny how certain scenes resonate so differently for different viewers? That peanutbutter sandwich upset me to such a ridiculous degree. XD Not the choice of spread but the untoasted white parody of bread. My theories range from a sly "Anyone who can deliver emotional lines with that much cardboard stuck to the roof of their mouth must surely win an Academy Award" to "It's Barton brothers comfort food from the days the boys had to sort out their own meals at their parents's neglect and Nat misses Clint - which is why she can't finish eating the vile thing". :-D
I am waiting for the day this will be cleared up in fan fiction. ;D

Because she's not only a badass woman, but also kind of a pick-me-up when the real-life struggles get too much. Given her past, Natasha never really had it easy, but still, she pushes through whatever problem is in front of her and comes out stronger on the other side. If that's not a motivator to do the same ;)
What first drew me to the character:
Her whole being, to be honest. Nat is, like others have said already, a woman who doesn't take shit from anyone. Plus, there's so much I still don't know about her (despite having read her bio on marvel.com), that you probably could fill a whole book or two with stories about these "missing" things.
Favourite scene in the MCU:
A tie between these two scenes, both from the Avengers
Favourite look:
Civil War, with that wonderful waves in her hair, but like others here already have pointed out, every look is a stunning look
Favourite fight scene:
Iron Man 2 - hands down. The way she turns into a one-woman-army and takes down all of Hammer's security personnel is just the kind of awesome that only Natasha Romanov can deliver.
Second place goes to her initial scene in "The Avengers", not only for the way she takes down that slimy Russian Mob boss and his henchmen, but also for the perfectly timed interloping with Coulson listening to her doing so via her handy.
Favourite line:
"I don't see how that's a party" ("The Avengers")
"I wouldn't stress about it" (to Scott in "Civil War")
"Is that dirty enough for you?" ("Iron Man 2")
"Bye-bye bikinis." ("The Winter Soldier")
"We're still friends, right?" (while fighting Clint in "Civil War")
"Either one of you know where the Smithsonian is? I'm here to pick up a fossil." ("The Winter Soldier")
"Did I step on your moment?" ("The Winter Soldier")
among sooooo many others XD it's also about the way ScarJo delivers them
Favourite comic book appearance:
Haven't read any comics so far (only snippets)
Favourite Clint/Natasha fic: Instead of naming names here, I just leave you the link to my bookmarks for this couple ;) Though I gotta say, CloudAtlas has such a wonderful way of writing these two (or three when teamed up with Bucky)
Bookmarks
Favourite alternate pairing fic:
All that have Bucky/Nat, but I also have read good ones where she's paired with Steve, Sam, Pepper or Maria Hill. But let's be real, every story with Nat in the character list is a good one (in my opinion). Again, I'll leave you a link to my bookmarks ;)

Natasha knows what it's like to be unmade and yet, while she always pulls herself back together she still keeps her emotions and vulnerabilities.
She's worked hard to become her own person and literally dies to protect who and what she believes in, to balance wrong she has done.
What first drew me to the character:
I came to the MCU for Hawkeye (Bow and arrows on that guy who played that obscure cameo part in that one episode of Angel more than a decade ago! I'm in!) and went OH, WHO'S THAT?!
Favourite scene in the MCU:
SO. MANY. Those where her smarts and talents show and not just her collarbones. Also that lopsided smile. <3
Favourite look:
AoU curls! Endgame two-tone braid! Anything but that white-blond mess or the ironed flatness of Winter Soldier.
Favourite fight scene:
Since everybody already said Iron Man 2 - it is genuinely amazing after all - I'm gonna say it's a fourway toss-up between the engine room in Winter Soldier, fighting the actual Winter Soldier (the way she wraps around his neck in the "you could at least remember me" fight makes me want to see Bucky & Nat going for all-out lindyhop dancing. XD) and both instances of her fighting Clint on the helicarrier and at the German airport.
Favourite line:
Scott Lang: Have any of you guys ever studied Quantum Physics?
Natasha: Only to make conversation.
― Endgame
- I love how that said so much about the life of espionage she used to lead in such an off-handed manner.
There's so many, but these are definitely at the top of the list:
“I am a spy. Not some rooftop-jumping archer, shield-wielding super-soldier, or shiny-metal philanthrobot. I need to make that clear on my business card. Espionage is shadow warfare. Cold combat. Does anything about this feel cold to you?”
― Nathan Edmondson, Black Widow #4
“Picking your own jobs means you get to exercise your own ethics. But ethics isn't a science. Which is to say... You do your best... But that doesn't make you right.”
― Nathan Edmondson, Black Widow #2
And, as a bonus:
“Pro tip: (Often learned too late) Don't argue with crazy. Just expect crazy... to be f*cking insane.”
― Nathan Edmondson, Black Widow #5
Favourite comic book appearance:
I don't know much about comicverse, but I do own the Noto/Edmondson 2014/2015 run and love it to bits.
Favourite Clint/Natasha fic:
Well that I can't possibly pick, so I'll go with favourite authors for the pairing:
The obvious being, in alphabetical order rather than preference:
and, as a recent discovery on my part,
Favourite alternate pairing fic:
A good writer can make the most unusual pairings work, so I've seen unexpected combinations turn out well.
Right now I am enjoying all the "Black Widow & Winter Soldier have a past" ideas that have been cropping up. And

What first drew me to the character: Nobody liked Ironman 2 then or now but I... loved it? I love that she is unapologetic about doing her job and keeping people safe, and also that she does not give one single shit what Tony thinks of her. And that she and Pepper join forces. When she kicks Happy's ass. The hallway fight. And! And! And!
Favourite scene in the MCU: can I just say the entirety of Winter Soldier? Like, let me be clear. If not for Winter Soldier, I would not write fic. A single arrow necklace achieved what the entirety of Avengers, for whatever reason, did not!
But, within Winter Soldier, and therefore I guess my favorite, the scene in the car with Steve. Vulnerability! Banter! The truth is a matter of circumstance! It's not all things to all people all the time! And neither am I! Need I say more!
Favourite look: I love the Civil War look but it's impractical for fighting. Can you imagine?? I think AOU - that look was my icon for a while.
Favourite fight scene: Winter Soldier engine room! Winter Soldier engine room! Winter Soldier engine room!
Favourite line: Ironman 2: I'd do whatever I want, with whoever I wanted to do it with. It just says... EVERYTHING to me about her past as well as her present.
Favourite comic book appearance: Tough question. Secret Avengers, maybe? I do love Noto's look though. Or, ooh, the one where she and Clint almost die in the sewers because of some crocodile drug?
Favourite Clint/Natasha fic: I can't do this! How dare you! A few that I love:
- favorite fic that led to my first tattoo: "We Together Make A City" by CloudAtlas
- favorite mission fic: "Between the Shadow and the Soul" by NyxEtoile and Olives Awl
-favorite AU: "Second Skin" by Frea_O, although they're not really together in that so here, also, "Mr. & Mrs. Barton (Or: Why Natasha Sends Jennifer Aniston an Annual Apologetic Fruit Basket)" by shellybelle
-favorite classic: (and by classic I mean from my earliest bookmarks when I first started reading fic in 2014) "The Skies Over Manhattan" by AlphaFlyer, of course, or
"The Observable Universe" by Sarea Okelani
There, is that enough?????
Favourite alternate pairing fic: this is difficult! I like Clint/Nat/Bucky, (your number 1 source for that is obviously "CloudAtlas"). I also enjoy Natasha/Maria? Here's one I like: "there really aren't a hundred places to go" by buckstiel

My imaginary gift basket to the person in wardrobe who picked out that necklace in in the mail.
May I ask what kind of tattoo We Together Make a City inspired?

Additional for me was the fact that of all the MCU movies at that time, it didn't have that typical Superhero Movie-feeling to it, but more that of a political thriller, where the main character just happens to be a super soldier, who has to realize that pretty much everything around him was a lie, and who has to pick himself up, with the help of a handful of people he can trust.
And of course the silent presence of Bucky throughout the whole movie, with maybe a handful of lines in total. Kudos to Seb for doing such an awesome job nonetheless.

What first drew me to the character: Her relationship with Clint and how they could flow between "friends" or "more" and have it still be the same. Also she kicked ass.
Favourite scene in the MCU: The hallways scene in Iron Man 2.
Favourite look: Winter Soldier hair
Favourite fight scene: tie between the IM2 hallway or the 2012 Avengers Russian mafia interrogation scene.
Favourite line: "These moron's are giving me all the intel." (not exact but you get the idea)
Favourite comic book appearance: Tie between Fraction!Hawkeye or Noto's run.
