ATTF: friending time.

Greetings, best bar on earth!! Man I have missed this place. This time of year is always so crazy-busy, and there's always so much to get done that it seems to fly by in a kind of haze (I know I've pretty much been doing my own zombie walk just trying to make it through, and a huge shoutout to Bob for some much needed fic therapy; it's totally keeping my ass sane right now.)

But how goes it, y'all?

shenshen77and I were talking the other day and she had mentioned that we hadn't had a good old-fashioned friending meme in a while, and I thought that sounded like a dandy idea. I also think we need a good impromptu dance party and a chance to chat and hang out with old friends and make new ones and just be our awesome selves.

So please come by and introduce yourself. Say a few words about how you found this place or this ship and what your interests are. Check out other people's comments. Feel free to stalk them (in a non-creepy and completely respectful way) and comment crash-- hell, this place was built on comment-crashing (you think I'm kidding but I'm not.) There is no form to fill out becuase I'm allergic to forms. Free jazz all the way, bb. ;)

ETA on the introductions: no need to go into detail on the personal stuff. share as much as you feel comfortable with. i always like being a little cautious on that front, this being the internets and all. <3

Aren't they??? ;) You should have seen me trying to explain some of the finer aspects of fandom, such as idioms like "arm porn" to them ;) Their faces!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

I totally understand! I've been in that exact same position! At least we don't have to worry about explaining too much "tentacle porn" in this fandom!

And I am soooo happy about that, you have no idea! I mean, my other fandom is Supernatural, so... there I do have that problem ;) And it was one of my friends from there posting the Renner/Rope pic on my FB and then talking about arm porn that sparked all the questions ;) The faces, precious :D

I'm completely open about writing fanfic and fandom and such but I'm very glad that my FB doesn't have a lot of crossover so I don't have to answer those questions unless I bring them up first. That way I'm prepared!

But that picture is SO PRETTY! Everyone deserves to see it! You should tell your RL friends just how lucky they are. *grins*

I'm open about it too, but they are more the 'I don't get it, you are too old for that' type of women, you know... And I only have that one fandom friend also on FB and yes, it just happened!

I know, dude, why don't they appreciate him the same way I do???? *winks* Ah well, more for us (MEMEMEMEME) :D

How sad that people think fandom is for TEH YOUNGSTERS and not for EVERYONE. Who says you need to outgrow fandom? If my dad knew how to use a computer and there was a fandom for Storage Wars, I bet he'd be all over that. Who's to say that our fandom is any different, just because we go a little overboard.

I think I've started to rub off on my coworkers because one of them has been talking about Chicago Fire and Taylor Kinney in the same terms I use with my obsessions. *grins* And she's AGES older than me.

I know, right? But then, they are very smalltownish in their mindset, I guess it is more that than anything else *shrugs* It's not like I care, they have their opinions and believes, I have mine ;)

And if you go overboard aboard a friggin yacht, it's just a sign that the party was great and the Champagne plentiful ;))))))

And all the props for getting your co-worker to indulge her squee, I had my mom over a couple weeks ago and we ended up squeeing over Jeremy Renner on YouTube ;) And when I sent her the links to the SNL skits I just got an email back with the header 'JEREMY!!!' :D

That is so awesome that your mom likes him enough to squee with you!

I think it's all about being in a safe place to squee. My poor coworkers have been putting up with me for the last four years and they know I'm not going to give them grief... except about 50 Shades. I have no love for that conversation and I tell them every time they bring it up. They can have that conversation away from me. What can I say... I'm a fanfic snob.

I'm just glad our yacht has a guard rail so we don't fall overboard when the party gets hopping!

Yeah, I even left her alone with my laptop to look some more while I went to get breakfast ;) My parents had just watched The Hurt Locker upon my insistence the day before and she finally got my obsession :D My father was more like 'Should we be worried if that is her favorite movie???' ;D

My go to movie friend and I always squee at each other, she about some RL dudes at work, I about Jeremy Renner ;) So yes, safe place to squee is key! We so need an icon for that, don't you think??? *grins*

50 Shades, yeah, not for me either... I actually have no idea about the book or the background or whatnot, but I just heard that the writing is awful and... yeah, so I don't need that ;)

Guard rails, yes, lifesavers here on this yacht!

None of my co-workers get my love of The Avengers. I don't discuss it much but it is a little more out there now that I have three of the Lego kits put together and on display in my cubicle. (The Hulk Helicarrier Breakout kit, the Quinjet Ariel Battle and Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape) I got a few eyerolls but for the most part nobody has said anything. OTOH, I don't say anything when they sit there and talk incessantly about all the reality shows they watch like Teen Mom, Honey Boo-Boo and the like.

I can't wait to see what they say about the three LoTR Lego kits I picked up once I get them together and displayed. *eg*

The problem always seems to become that they think you just really like LEGOs! They don't understand that it's one expression of many types of fandoms and then you start getting gifts of random LEGOs because they think you like them! That happened to a friend of mine once. Fun times! *grins*

Well I do TALK about The Avengers-like talking about the movie release dates so hopefully that will clue them in.

although the three LoTR Lego kits that I just bought, will be assembling and displaying might throw them off.

And I do admit, I love Lego.

Because LEGOs are COOL!

I'm really tempted to buy the Firefly set (that isn't a true LEGO release) but I don't really think spending over $300 on a huge ship would be smart at this juncture!

*ahem*

Well I did just spend $250 on the three LoTR Lego kits.

*whistles* But I got the three Avengers kits free after using Discover card cash back bonuses so you know-Merry Christmas to me.

And Legos are cool. I played with them as a kid. In fact, I had a whole trunk full of them. Except they weren't all the cool things they have now. It was all bricks and flats. No shapes or wheels or cool things like that. But my imagination sufficed quite well. I would build whole cities and then play with my barbie and GI Joe dolls. (Barbie usually drove the Tonka truck through the city *g*)

Ah, the days when LEGOs came without the imagination included! I get so frustrated with them now because you have to play with them the way they think you should play with them. And the girl-ification of them has me a bit miffed but I know it's just a tactic to garner more money going into the holiday buying season.

I never had enough to build cities so used boxes for that. I still have this thing about boxes... like I should be using them for something instead of recycling them. It's particularly bad at work where I'm constantly carting flattened boxes to the bins. All those cities... reduced to rubble!

Yeah, I just started getting back into Lego a couple of weeks ago. On one hand, the kits are great because I am looking to build sets to display and not really-at this point in time-looking to build things to play with.

But the girl-ification of Lego is really an overall symptom of the entire toy/media industrial complex. Girls like all things pink/frilly/"traditionally feminine" and boys like things blue/gritty-dirty/"traditionally masculine".

So girls get toys like the Easy Bake Oven, all the Barbie crap (and yes, there are a few Barbie dolls that are Doctors or other role models but tbh, I hate the whole concept) and marketed pink and purple Lego kits.

Boys get Hot Wheels, Tonka Trucks, GI Joe and really cool Lego kits.

For fuck's sake, Amazon.com has links to girls toys and boys toys. And guess what each page has??

Let's not get started on the unrealistic ideals that girls are expected to live up to with respect to beauty ideals.

Sorry, I have lots of feels about this.

Boxes are fun to play with. I used those a lot as well. They made cool forts. I think, because when I was a kid we didn't have computers or the internet, we had to make a lot of our own fun so we had to rely more on our imagination.
