ATTF: Thor 2 Discussion Post

Happy Friday, greatest bar! Something a little off topic for today, but still very relevant to our interests. ;)

We are going to talk about Thor: The Dark World! What you liked, what you didn't, where you think Clint and Natasha might have been during all this, now is your chance to discuss it with your fellow bar patrons!

Needless to say, the comments will be a SPOILER ZONE. If you haven't seen Thor 2 and wish to remain unspoiled, please proceed with caution.

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Okay, so...raise your hand if you really don't like Loki all that much and yet you found him delightful in this movie? Because damn, son. The entire sequence where they're escaping Asgard in a ship is some of the funniest action I have ever seen in a Marvel movie.

Also, I love Darcy Lewis and I am unashamed of that.

(I don't have an icon for this!)

I have always loved Loki and I always will. I am terrible. Like nothing he can do will make me not like him. Well...let me rephrase that...nothing he has done so far, including murder a bunch of people and possibly his own dad has made me dislike him.

(Also I know this will never happen, but I would love a Loki/Sif angle at some point. I think they have chemistry and look awesome together. )

I love Darcy too!! The only part I didn't love was when she called Mijlnir (or however its spelled) "Miu-miu". I know it was a joke from the first movie, but I wasn't feeling it.

She was so funny with her intern!! And I had a feeling they were going to end up locked-lipped. Awww.

Oh, I loved the mew-mew stuff. Like, you can be as serious as you like, God of Thunder, but Darcy Lewis is going to infantilize your magic hammer come hell or high water. :)

[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah ok, that is better then! I thought she couldn't pronounce it properly and that bugged me!

[identity profile] frea-o.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She heard it incorrectly the first time and probably now thinks it's hysterical. Which it is. :)

*raises both hands*

I appreciated Loki as a well played bad guy. I fully didn't expect I'd be enjoying his parts, but I was.

We can also raise a toast to wonderfulness of Miss Darcy Lewis. :D

Yeah, if you're not trying to woobify him or tell me he's a good dude (he's really not, he killed thousands in the Avengers), then I can enjoy him. I also enjoy his connection to Thor. I mean, after all, they're brothers and have been brothers for at least a millennium.

[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What I enjoy about Loki is that he's an ambiguous character - you know or should know how problematic he is and you don't hate him (I never hated him). He is somewhat like characters from Godfather movies; you're aware that they're not good men but yous till appreciate them and the whole thing. Also, if you're looking at it from Thor's perspective? That's still his brother, Thor wants to trust him, he still loves him, and he knows he can't trust him. So I enjoyed those moments a lot and how they made it very clear - you can like Loki but you can't trust him, and heck, he can even do some very good things. Just, well done movie.

I love this analysis.

[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes -- he's a good villain. The most effective villains are the charismatic ones -- personal charm is a distinguishing mark of many sociopaths (or is it psychopaths? I always get those mixed up). I mean, thuggery and terror only gets you so far up the spoils-and-power ladder...

So, yeah, I can admire his height and his wit and his hair, evem feel a twinge of sadness at the lost-prince back story, but that doesn't grant him any form of amnesty from me whatsoever ... even as I hope he'll come back in another movie, precisely because he gives Great Story.

[identity profile] frea-o.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of the problem for me is that I always see his fandom telling me he's just poor widdle Woki and and he should be pitied because his dad was so mean to him. And it makes me roll my eyes because thousands (maybe even millions!) of people with less than awesome parents didn't go try to take over planets and murder thousands. So, yeah. But yeah, in this movie, away from his fandom, I could enjoy him for the charismatic, not-helping-at-all-dammit-Loki person because as you said, Great Story.

That said, I do think Odin is definitely a villain, too. Not that it excuses Loki's actions, but Odin is villainous.

[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree 100%, with everything you say.

Re Odin -- he is the "benign, righteous tyrant" who screws things up simply because he is so used to getting his own way, he's forgotten that what he has is a perspective and that there may be others. His intentions may be prima facie good, but his execution sucks.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This is me. I never actively disliked him per say, but I thought he was far too overrated. He was a little better in Avengers than Thor 1, but Thor 2 is the first time I've really loved him. They really played up the two sides of him in ways that were really interesting to watch.

[identity profile] frea-o.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of the problem I have with him are his fans. We were playing Cards Against Humanity last month and I hand-wrote in, "The Loki Fandom" as a terrible thing. :)

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Villains are interesting as villains. Why the need to make them into something they aren't? Loki is a bad guy. He may have layers, but he's still a bad guy who has murdered a whole lot of people.

And he wasn't abused by Odin and/or Thor in the movieverse (though probably by Odin somewhat in the comics), no matter how much his fans want to think he is. Part of Loki's character is that he has all these imagined slights that build up and that come partly out of self-hate. But they are imagined. They aren't based in reality.

[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com 2013-11-15 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel kinda separate from his fandom b/c I went into Thor knowing absolutely nothing about any of them people (back when I would refuse to watch any movie trailer b/c I wanted to be surprised...now I am too weak to resist!)...all I knew was there was a character named Thor. I didn't know who Loki was or that he was important, and he totally stole the movie. I couldnt take my eyes off him (once I noticed him) and told my husband afterwards "I don't know who that actor is but he is incredible." I didn't "get" that he was a villain. I thought his arc was going to be villainy and then redemption. Now I know he is a trickster and goes back and forth between being awful and helpful (and always charming), but its hard to lose that first impression.

Maybe I feel similar to him the way Frigga did. ;)

*raises hand* I have a friend who's a huge Loki fan and has been attempting to explain this to me with comics and graphic novels and books on myth and...that plus the film paid off. Thankfully I don't have to like a villan to appreciate their banter and trickery *grins*. But yes, much better done in this film.

DARCY! I was so very happy with the amount of Team Science in this film :D

I found myself thinking, "Loki is a horrible person, and yet a wonderful character," a combination of his writing and Hiddleston's commitment to the role.
