ATTF: Thor 2 Discussion Post
Happy Friday, greatest bar! Something a little off topic for today, but still very relevant to our interests. ;)

We are going to talk about Thor: The Dark World! What you liked, what you didn't, where you think Clint and Natasha might have been during all this, now is your chance to discuss it with your fellow bar patrons!

Needless to say, the comments will be a SPOILER ZONE. If you haven't seen Thor 2 and wish to remain unspoiled, please proceed with caution.

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Okay, so...raise your hand if you really don't like Loki all that much and yet you found him delightful in this movie? Because damn, son. The entire sequence where they're escaping Asgard in a ship is some of the funniest action I have ever seen in a Marvel movie.

Also, I love Darcy Lewis and I am unashamed of that.

(I don't have an icon for this!)

I have always loved Loki and I always will. I am terrible. Like nothing he can do will make me not like him. Well...let me rephrase that...nothing he has done so far, including murder a bunch of people and possibly his own dad has made me dislike him.

(Also I know this will never happen, but I would love a Loki/Sif angle at some point. I think they have chemistry and look awesome together. )

I love Darcy too!! The only part I didn't love was when she called Mijlnir (or however its spelled) "Miu-miu". I know it was a joke from the first movie, but I wasn't feeling it.

She was so funny with her intern!! And I had a feeling they were going to end up locked-lipped. Awww.

*raises both hands*

I appreciated Loki as a well played bad guy. I fully didn't expect I'd be enjoying his parts, but I was.

We can also raise a toast to wonderfulness of Miss Darcy Lewis. :D

This is me. I never actively disliked him per say, but I thought he was far too overrated. He was a little better in Avengers than Thor 1, but Thor 2 is the first time I've really loved him. They really played up the two sides of him in ways that were really interesting to watch.

*raises hand* I have a friend who's a huge Loki fan and has been attempting to explain this to me with comics and graphic novels and books on myth and...that plus the film paid off. Thankfully I don't have to like a villan to appreciate their banter and trickery *grins*. But yes, much better done in this film.

DARCY! I was so very happy with the amount of Team Science in this film :D

I found myself thinking, "Loki is a horrible person, and yet a wonderful character," a combination of his writing and Hiddleston's commitment to the role.

Can we talk about the cameo? OMG I was DYING. That was so unexpected!!!

I think Clint and Natasha were on a mission with no extraction during all this. ;) I LOVE how we got a canon reference towards them this week!

*highfive* BECAUSE THEY ARE THEIR OWN EXTRACTION TEAM.

I loved pretty much everything? I may be the least nitpicky viewer out there (okay, I doubt it) but lately I go into things almost without expectation and in return usually end up having very good time. The move was so much FUN - action, humor, lots of Asgard, lots of Thor's friends (okay, more a lot more than in first film), Heimdall, all those people we saw in passing were now doing things. Frigga was awesome. Odin was a major douchebag and I hated him and think he got what he asked for (no sympathy there). Loki was the biggest surprise, I can't believe I actually enjoyed him. JANE AND DARCY AND ERIK AND IAN WERE ALL AWESOME, and of course I have theories about Clint now after I've seen what happened to Selvig. And then finally Thor who is much more mature and balanced. Just. Major pile of squee, that movie.

I am probably forgetting something.

Clint speculation thread?
So guys, after you've seen the movie, are you having any theories about Clint's mental health and how Loki's mind control could have affected his brain?
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on November 15th, 2013 08:32 pm (UTC)
Re: Clint speculation thread?
Have you read this response by Kevin Feige?

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/MarvelFreshman/news/?a=89779

"Well, I think we saw that in The Avengers already. We saw the scene where he is with Widow, and he’s coming out of that, and he’s dealing with the repercussions of that. That was sort of it for Hawkeye. Selvig was held in that Loki trance a little bit longer and only popped out at the very, very end, so I think his repercussions [are more significant]. And also, Hawkeye is a field operative of SHIELD. Selvig is a university professor. [Laughs] So they deal with it in different ways. Hawkeye definitely plays a very large part in Age of Ultron. So that’ll be the next place to further evolve the character."

I'm worrying (okay, hoping) that we'll see Clint streaking in Age of Ultron. *heh*

BTW, the Cap cameo was WIN.

I loved this movie. It was everything movies should be -- a least the ones you shell out money for to see them in 3D.

On of my favourites was the post-credit scene with the orphaned Frost Beast (talk about a toothsome plot bunny!). That thing is SO going into a story I'm writing right now ... :-)

Yay, people online have seen this film now! I'm so used to us being behind the US with film releases that the UK getting it before has really confused me lol.

I have nattered about this a lot offline already, but let's throw some thoughts out...

I enjoyed the banter! And the quoatability! I appreciated the ladies! (Sif kicks ass and doesn't fight Jane for Thor's affections, too busy for that. Frigga is a Queen. Jane "it's a quantum field generator" Foster. Darcy "holy shit' Lewis, the person who set up the devices there at the end and holds everyone together. Just, YES, hello ladies.) Team Science! The Avengers have Shawarma, this lot have Team Science Breakfast! (It was in Thor 1; they did it first *grins*) Set in the UK and yet wasn't awful like some US interpretations of the UK are. Team Science actively contributed to saving the day! Odin's little smile whenever he talks about killing people. Loki's trickery. All the funny moments during the end fight scene. (And the Agents of SHIELD episode that's meant to cross over with this film? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let the hammer fly past!) Stan Lee cameo! PANTS!!! How reassuring when the world is crazier than you are.

Just, yes, I enjoyed this film a great deal. I waited to see if any faults jumped out after the first viewing and the shine wore off, but y'know what? If there were any problems it was 'more of that would have been nice' and 'I don't know how that dude managed to join the Warrors bringing prisoners, but never mind, exposition not really needed' and stuff like that. Nothing huge. Nothing that stops me enjoying it. (Although, Thor, with those subway directions you ain't getting to Greenwich, ha)

Loki was awesome in this film. Hiddleston acted the shit out of this movie, totally stole the show. I thought it was gorgeous, visually, had me laughing at the right parts (oh man, Steve Rogers, forever forever forever), and was truly fun. (And I loved the Winter Soldier trailer!)

I can't decide what bothered me more: Natalie Portman (one of my first crushes, and I honestly never thought I was going to say I didn't like her in a film) or Jane Foster. Separate events.

1. Jane felt like the only character in the film who didn't get an arc. She was a plot point. She was used solely as a character propping up a plot instead of a character driving a plot, a character within a plot, etc. That really irritated me.

2. Parts of Asgard felt a LOT like the new Star Wars films in which Portman was involved (I mean, think of the fighter pilot fights, Thor losing an arm (kinda), and her costuming). The whole time I thought Asgard was like a SLIGHTLY better casted/better set/better costuming/better scripted version of Star Wars Eps I, II, and III on Nabo.

My first thought when they showed Erik being nutso was, "Hmm, maybe fandom has underestimated what kind of issues Clint's been dealing with as well." My second thought was, "Well he came out from under Loki's control sooner and he's a trained agent and he got to blow stuff up." My third thought was, "Yeah but Clint actually killed/tried to kill people - his coworkers included - while under Loki's control and Selvig was just doing science stuff. My fourth thought was, "Okay but Selvig even seemed a little less-tightly wrapped during Avengers, going on about the Tesseract showing him things, whatever that's about." So basically I just had a lot of thoughts about those things.

I didn't really like the movie.

Okay, that's not true, I didn't like it as a whole.

Parts of the movie REALLY derailed things for me. I thought a lot of the crap with Dr. Selvic with no pants was excessive, thought the darcy/intern stuff was... slightly off

and I'm very angry they killed Frigga.

I know, people die in these movies and without her death, Loki wouldn't have been able to replace Odin because she'd have known, but we FINALLY got to see her fight and, blade through the back.

Also, she's a goddess on a world of amazing tech and they don't even TRY and save her, THAT pissed me off.

I don't know, maybe I was too annoyed because a lot of the really good jokes I'd already had spoiled for me but the stuff I didn't like kept weighing down the things I did like.

I liked the dark elves.
I liked they spoke a different language.
I liked seeing Thor's friends have their own personalities more.

I thought Loki on the throne at the end should have been more subtle, but that's just me.

My husband loved it.

As for how Clint might have been handling things, I'm hoping Natasha looked after him. I'd imagine he's got a huge amount of guilt and I got the impression some of Selvic's mania was he went from working with an object from another part of space to I guess doing nothing?

Why did SHIELD let him go?

Where the hell IS SHIELD in these movies.

That was something that bugged the hell out of me for IM3, this man is killing all these people and they don't have a task force looking for him? They were involved in some capacity because JARVIS states some of the data he got was from SHIELD.

I get SHIELD not being on top of the event since it's focal point was outside their main hub, that's fine, and yes, it's possible because of what happened Dr. Selvic quit, but some of his rantings seemed more because soemthing else interstellar was happening and no one would believe him.

I'll probably like this movie more if I see it again but on the whole, at the end, I didn't really enjoy myself, I just felt frustrated.
