ATTF: Clint, Natasha and the Agents of SHIELD

Did you go EEEP!! the same way I did, when those throwaway lines got thrown away in Season One of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD?  And started to wonder whether we were going to see our assassins pop in on the show?   …  And (after spending a token few minutes being disappointed) felt your own creative gears start to crank up when they didn’t?  Well, here’s your chance to watch/make it happen!

SHIELD was/is a place where chances are pretty good that field agents would know one another.  Coulson is a given – we’ve seen him talking to both Clint and Natasha on screen.  And there's lots of fic involving him and our ship (or one of them ...) out there already. It’s the others I'd like to look at, or the group of them together.  Some thoughts:

-                Melinda May has been “in” for quite some time, but so has Clint (his service photo, which can be seen on one of the screens in “Avengers,” is dated 8/30/99). Do they have a history – as green recruits, partners, friends with benefits, colleagues, or did they get drunk at the SHIELD Christmas party and wake up in Bahrain? (Without prejudice to later relationships!)

-                Has Natasha trained with Ward, taught him what he knows, whupped him, maybe even noticed there was something not quite ... genuine with the guy?  Would Coulson ask her to interrogate him, after the fall of SHIELD?

-                What would happen if Natasha ran into Skye doing a hack job? Who learns from whom?

-                Did FitzSimmons design any of Clint’s arrow heads?  Are they starstruck by Hawkeye, or do they find designing his killware mildly distasteful?

-                Did Natasha ever take that lie detector test what's-his-face mentioned?

-                How do you think Clint would have gotten along with Victoria Hand, or John Garrett?

-                Would “Director” Coulson reach out to Clint and Natasha, now ensconced in Avengers Tower, to help him kick-start new!SHIELD?  Would Maria Hill act as liaison to make it happen?

-                Sitwell.  Go.

Excellent! Will definitely check those out!! Especially the Clint/Garrett one (although maybe I read that one? I think I read one once).

My head canon has Garrett trying to recruit Clint, and taking totally the wrong tack. I alluded to that obliquely in 5 Times SHIELD tried to recruit Clint Barton (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1988796) but never really spelled out how it went down. Maybe I should ... (Or maybe that story you rec'd already did and I won't need to bother!)

Watching the first two episodes of season 2, I finally want to fic this universe. Still eyeing it up though. I see parallels with Hunter and Barton (headcanon says Phil brought Clint in) and I can see Natasha and Clint working for this SHIELD but also being Avengers, so moonlighting for SHIELD? Seriously.

And I love, love, love the idea of Melinda and Clint being prank buddies when they were "green recruits"—though technically they weren't that green. :grins:

And then I also see Melinda and Natasha being great drinking, shoptalk buddies.

And I don't know why but I think Skye and Clint would really hit it off, but technically Natasha's the hacker, so...

I think I'm still osmosing Agents of SHIELD, judging by my rambles.

I have only watched the first half of season 1 of SHIELD (tragic, I know!) but I may have thought at some point that it would be cool if Skye is Clint's daughter.

So I have this whole Headcanon for MCU Clint that doesn't follow the comics entirely involving Philinda. It makes it seem like MCU had Clint not start as a criminal. So here we go.

Clint was Deaf from the car accident and was basically adopted by parents who were really supportive of his disablities. Sent him to a school for the Deaf. However the bills were really expensive so he decided to take a tempo job while he was studying at a community college so he could go to a good school, and here where it mingles with the comics and later Phil and Melinda, he worked at the Circus (Carsons Carnival of Wonders). There he met the Swordsman, he taught Clint how to shoot a bow and arrow like in the comics because he noticed Clint was interested in his Skill.

The Swordsman was on SHIELDS radar as a Criminal Phil and Melinda as young agents were sent to fetch him. The swordsman skilled at weaponary attacked them both. As Melinda was young she didnt have the skills she has now so both she and Coulson were almost killed. However an arrow flew out of nowhere and incapacitated the Swordsman. Impressed by that a young kid no older than eighteen was skilled enough to take down a man with a bow and arrow, Phil and Melinda decided to contact SHIELD in hopes to recruit him. Even with the Disabilities Act placed Clint found this to be his only option to be successful and to this day he was quite happy to be a part of shield even with the HYDRA.

Coulson was originally Clint's superior officer. And was for decades. When he "Died" Melinda took on the job (despite we know he lived) and continued to do so knowing Coulson wouldn't want anyone else.

As for the HYDRA fall, Clint had left SHIELD temporarily at the HYDRA fall however...Melinda and Coulson recently convinced him to come back along with Natasha.

Yes my head canon is long and elaborate but it seems only logical in my mind the three of them would have this close relationship.

Yes, me too. He got quite enthusiastic about cooperating in the car, even to the point of being concerned that their plans were .. not entirely safe ("are you crazy??"). So, if Brock Rumlow can make it out of a fireball onto a stretcher, then Jasper Sitwell can escape that fly swatter truck and have a redemption arc!

(I need him to run the betting pool at a resurrected SHIELD.)

I have the HC that Melinda and Natasha are shopping buddies, that when Natasha has some time between missions her and Melinda would go to the high-end stores (because with hazard pay they have more than enough to spend) and pick out a pair of new shoes or dress for them to use on a girls night out with Maria or mission.

Even when Melinda gets out of the field, she still goes with Natasha when their schedules match and enjoy catching up on what's been going on with the other; Melinda catches Natasha up on all the office gossip while Natasha complains endlessly about Clint while May smiles and makes a mental note to change her bet on Sitwell's pool on when the two will finally admit feelings for each other.

I really wish they'd stop casually dropping Natasha's name like that. Also, do we really think Nat gave up all her espionage secrets to SHIELD?

And yes I think Natasha beat the chair, 'the truth isn't all things to all people' (something like that)

Or if she was caught it'd be caught in a way that wasn't detrimental to her secrets.

Though according to Cap 2 SHIELD knew all her old identities, odd.

I would hope Coulson reaches out to his babies old team. I'm sure that he'd want to tell at least Clint he was alive since he has to be carrying some guilt over his death do to its timing.

I'm also still not sure HOW is being alive is still a secret. He traveled across the globe in a highly visible jet, it wasn't just people with high clearance who saw him (in The Hub are you telling me a level 8 set out those badges to be picked up?) With all the media attention on SHIELD from Talbot, Tony isn't digging into everything trying to find out what's going on?

I would really, really like to see Coulson at least talking to Natasha and Clint.

Do we have any idea how long ago Bahrain is? Was May out of the field before Clint brought Nat in?
