The Good Ship C/N Promptathon
of Magic and Joy:
Aka, The Promptathon of All Wonderful Things Involving Two Certain Badass Assassin People Doing Badass Things and Being Awesome. And Badass. And Pretty. And Stuff.

NOTE: The promptathon has now closed, but please enjoy all the lovely fic and fanworks. in our Masterposts below.

Master List of all Promptathon fanworks.

Master List, Part 2 now with more delicious everything!

**Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rayruzfor the beautiful graphic.

******************

NOTE: PROMPTING HAS NOW CLOSED, BUT FICS AND FANWORKS MAY STILL BE SUBMITTED THROUGH AUGUST 31ST. THANKS!

Welcome!!!! The time is now upon us. This will kick off a month's worth of prompting and fanworking and all the good things. Not sure what to do? Click below for our handy-dandy Promptathon Guide!

RULES ON POSTING SUBMISSIONS
(please read before you post! <3)

The Rules.  Just follow these three easy steps!

1. Leave a Prompt.

Prompts can be anything--simple or elaborate, words or pictures, songs or poems, lyrics or phrases. Anything that, to you, inspires a C/N fanwork. Use your imagination. Go crazy. All I ask is that you keep it tasteful and warn for anything explicit or triggery. Also, try to be as specific as you can with your prompts--this is often very helpful to those creating the fanwork.

And leave as many prompts as you want. I’m serious. Keep coming back, y’all. We want all the prompts we can possibly get Also, be sure to leave each prompt as a separate comment.

2. Wait a week.
Tailgate and chitchat and keep leaving prompts. And mull over the epic fanworks you are creating.

3. Submit C/N fanwork like there is no tomorrow.
All submissions should either be posted here or linked to this post via a comment. The nitty gritty details of posting your stuff can be found HERE. Please read before you post

Timeframe:
Prompts will be accepted starting today, Friday, July 13th (!!!) and will remain open until Friday, August 10th.  Submissions may be submitted beginning on Friday, July 20th and may continue to be submitted until August 10th.

What we hope to accomplish with all this promptathon-iness:

  • A chance to get in the game. Been wanting to jump into the C/N fanwork scene but not sure where to start? Now’s the time. There’s no length requirement on the works submitted, you can focus on drabbles and vidlets and short and sweet projects (or do longer more epic stuff if that strikes your fancy as well).  It’s really entirely up to you. We’re just hoping to provide a fun, no-pressure environment.
  • Meet new and awesome people. Because srsly, I love everyone in this bar. It's a good damn bar. Don't be afraid to say hello
  • Ship like you’ve never shipped before.
  • Tailgate when appropriate. My motto is, if something ain’t a cocktail party, you just aren’t trying hard enough. In that spirit, [livejournal.com profile] aurora_0811and I are hosting the tailgate section (which I think at this point just includes random chatter and ridiculousness, cheerleading and tomfoolery, because I doubt our comm’s talkative nature will be suppressed even during the prompting/waiting period.) So pull up a helicarrier-shaped lawnchair, crack open a cold one and settle in for the festivities. And leave prompts.

And most of all, have fun. :)

Can someone do an Anastasia AU? Where Natasha is Anastasia and Clint, and maybe Coulson are like Dimitri and Vlad. This could be completely AU as in, no assassin skills or they could be secret badass/criminals and Natasha could have been with the red room after she was lost.

IDK GUYS, BUT I WANT IT SO BAD.

So this sparked a vision of Natasha and Clint in a post-apocalyptic-ish AU, which I'm not sure is what you wanted but is what got written anyway...

(It's also currently growing in my head to draw in all the other Avengers with plot and epic attempts to save the world, but that's a bit of an ambitious attempt right now.)

OMG, have you read no light in this valley (http://trysts.livejournal.com/124282.html), by [livejournal.com profile] trysts? Not that someone else shouldn't write your prompt, but if you haven't read this story yet, it might very well tide you over in the meanwhile because it has almost everything you asked for, except Thor is the sheriff and Clint is a Pinkerton agent. :D :D It's one of my favorites.

SWALLOW: Russian intelligence term for a female agent used for sexual entrapment in a ‘Honey Trap’ operation.

Okay, there's going to have to be a bit of follow the bouncing ball going on here. I wrote a fic which encompasses all twelve of these espionage terms. Don't worry, I'll link to the next part of the series at each drabble, and I will also have it posted in its entirety at AO3 and eventually at my personal journal.

The espionage term is referenced in some way in the drabble.

Title is taken from It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by R.E.M.

Warnings (for the whole series): minor violence and swearing

Clint watches from the rooftop as his mark enters the dinner party; one he would never have been invited to, due to his background and lack of money, compared to the people who had been invited. She’s in a deep blue gown and she has brunette hair, although he knows from her file that she’s a natural red head. Maybe it’s a wig, he muses, not that her hair color matters: she’s always lethal, always a dangerous weapon.

He observes her moving around the room, going up to certain men, appearing to talk to them and laughing when they say something to her. She eventually appears to whisper something in their ear, and Clint watches as they exit through a side door and move into the shadows, apparently waiting for her. He’s not surprised that they do what she asks without a second thought. Hell, he would probably do the same thing if asked, if he didn’t know who she was. If a beautiful woman asked something of him, he would make sure it happened, and damn the consequences. He figures these are her marks, but they have nothing to do with his mission of taking the Black Widow out.

"True Lies" AU wherein (summary abridged from Wikipedia):

Clint Barton leads a double life, performing covert missions for the U.S. gov't under a counter-terrorism task force, SHIELD. Two other Avengers (your choice) assist him in these missions under the command of Nick Fury. However, Clint's wife (Natasha, natch) and his daughter believe he is a boring salesman doing a lot of "corporate" travel.

His latest mission causes him to miss the birthday party that his wife and daughter have arranged for him. When Clint goes to Natasha's office the next day to surprise her and take her to lunch, he overhears a conversation between Natasha and her coworker about "Simon," a man she is seeing, causing Clint to worry about their marriage. Using SHIELD resources, he tracks down Simon, who turns out to be a used car salesman posing as a spy to seduce Natasha. Again misusing SHIELD resources, Clint 'kidnaps' Natasha from Simon's trailer and interrogates her, blindfolded. He questions her using a voice distorter about her relationship with "Simon" and about their marriage. She says that she hasn't actually cheated on her husband; she just wanted to have some adventure in her life.

Clint wants to make her happy (and help save his marriage) by giving her the adventure she wants, so he gives her a choice: go on a "mission" or be sent to prison. The mission is to pose as a prostitute and plant a bug on the phone of an arms dealer. Before Natasha has a chance to plant the bug, Clint (who poses as the arms dealer) insists that she dance for him. The sham is interrupted by actual bad guys from one of Clint's missions.

How close you stick to the original plot is up to you; mostly I just want to see the ridiculousness of trying to spice up her life with a fake spy when her actual husband is a real spy. :D At the end of the movie Jamie Lee Curtis does work for "SHIELD," but for the bulk of the action, this plotline kind of wastes Natasha, so feel free to change things so that she's more interesting, short of her actually being a spy also, because then that just makes this similar to a Mr. and Mrs. Smith AU, which has been done at least twice, and very well, to my knowledge.

Coulson walks into the abandoned warehouse, which is a bit cliché, after checking all the exits and alley ways for the possibility of an ambush. Barton’s also stationed on a nearby roof, making sure the conversation goes down as expected and no surprises occur. He stands in the middle of the open plan main floor, waiting.

“I didn’t expect you to come,” a female voice says from behind him. He carefully turns around to face her.

“Barton assured me you were no threat,” Coulson says, looking at her. She has on a deep blue gown, her red hair glowing like a flame in the sunlight.

She chuckles. “The Black Widow is always a threat. Barton’s a fool.”

“He has his moments,” Coulson agrees. “You wanted to ask me something?”

“Barton said that you could recruit me,” she walks slowly forward. Coulson keeps track of her movements.

“What asset could you be to SHIELD? You’ve taken out many of our agents. Why the change of heart?”

“I’ve come to realise I have red in my ledger, and you could help me to make it right.”

“You have to talk to Director Fury. What’s your real name?”

She pauses. “Natalia Alianovna Romanova.”

(Quick fic written at work today after seeing this prompt. Hopefully any errors are minor and...well, that this fic doesn't suck)

Ten seconds after it starts, he's on his back, and she's on top, knife to his neck. Insuring him from against having his windpipe slashed is his gun, pressed directly into her stomach. She has his free hand locked into submission against hers.

He has to take a moment to catch his breath but he's relieved to hear his voice still sounds a little cocky. "Confident, are we? Bringing a knife to a gunfight."

"Words from a dead man," she replies, equally cocky and tinged with an accent.

"I'm not dead yet, sweetheart," he reminds her. "And if you're going to send me to an early grave, I'm taking you with me."

"I'm not afraid of death," she says coolly. He doesn't doubt this. Any innate fear she might have been born with had probably been conditioned away. Based on her skill level, she was a formidable asset - one that she had been trained to protect. He's not even sure she could kill herself if she tried. Someone, somewhere, would flick a switch and she'd forget she had ever wanted to. Maybe even how.

He also figures she didn't fear death because the life she was living wasn't fully hers.

He's feeling reckless and a little desperate, and he has no good reason to start stroking the back of her hand with his thumb, but he does. "Such a waste."

She shrugs, not appearing particularly moved.

"How about we call this even?" he tries again.

"You flatter me," she scoffs. He could have her bleeding out of her spleen before she could even nick him in the neck, and she knows it.

The reckless and desperate feeling is making him feel a little high. "Is it working?"

"Don't do me any favours." He's still gently stroking the back of her hand, and she stills his thumb abruptly with hers. "We both have orders, but only one of us can carry them out. So what's stopping you?"

"Maybe I don't see this as a zero-sum game. Maybe there's a scenario where we both walk out of this."

"Sweetheart," she says, adopting his earlier tone, "we don't get happy endings in our line of work."

"Who said anything about happy endings?" he asks, breathing fast, trying to keep her engaged. "I'm just talking about one where we're both alive."

She smiles now and his vision blurs with vertigo. "I wouldn't have taken you for an optimist."

"I've made my choice already." He flicks his eyes down to the gun against her abdomen. "Maybe I'm feeling lucky."

She nods slowly in comprehension, biting her lip.

"So what'll it be?"

"Say I drop the knife..."

"I'll call off my folks and tell them you're with me."

"How do I know you won't turn on me?"

"You don't."

She hesitates for a moment longer, and then sighs, backing off him slightly so he can sit up. He sees one of her guys behind her as he does, and pulls the gun smoothly from in between them and fires a perfect killshot. The sudden movement spooks her and she shoves him back down on the floor again, knife at his throat and he's about to protest before he notices she's not looking at him.

Shit, he thinks. He's well fucked now. Cause he can tell on her face - she knows him. Whoever it is she's looking at, she knows him and he probably knows her captive just killed one of theirs, and he's likely pissed and looking for someone to pay.

She has a knee on his right arm and is holding down his left hand. He forces himself to relax (no use fighting it now) and is surprised to see her look at him with sharp concern. He stares into her eyes, trying to get a read on her. She holds his gaze for a second longer, and squeezes his hand before she snaps her eyes away, and hurls her knife at the intruder with such ferocity he half expects her arm to go flying with it.

He's no idiot. The momentum rocks her forward slightly, enough for him to regain control of his right hand and he's immediately on the comm, demanding evac for himself and an asset before he even hears the agonized scream. He turns to look at her, incredulous and barely believing what had just happened.

She looks like she can barely believe what she did herself. She's wild eyed and breathing like she had just run a marathon. She glances over at him. "Now we're even," she says.

Coulson looks at the small mountain of paper on his desk. Natasha had willingly given them information on all the major players in her past operations, whether they were her targets or her employers, right down to their nighttime routines and what they did (or didn’t) wear to bed. It was more than they’d expected, as Fury had put her on probation without asking for anything else from her. Fury trusted Barton’s instincts, they both did, but Fury was still going to be cautious when it came to an unknown new agent, especially one who had worked for the other side.

This wealth of intelligence was willingly given, a gesture of goodwill, and her own choice. It has also given him a lot more work, not that he’s complaining. Analyzing and sorting through this data is going to be his job. He won’t give this information to anyone else until he’s sorted through it. Coulson suspects that she hasn’t been able to make her own decisions very often in her past life, even if there was a facade of her being able to choose her missions, choose her targets.

He mentally wishes her well at her new career at SHIELD.

Natasha sits down at the computer, while Clint stands guard. Getting into the party was easy enough, and they had simply acted like a drunk couple looking for privacy while entering the target’s home office. SHIELD had done an excellent job with their covers. She and Clint are posing as a couple who are prospective new clients of the man they’re getting information from. Their target’s a budding arms dealer with a side business in human trafficking. SHIELD found out about him, and wants to take him down, which is why they’re here. Natasha’s job is to access his computer system and take any information of value.

As she runs through the codes to access the computer’s hard drive, she thinks about this mission. She knows it’s the first mission she and Clint have been sent on solo, and her only thought is that it was about time. Clint had mentioned to her earlier in the safe house that he had thought she should have been off probation earlier, and she’d privately agreed. If she’d really wanted to destroy SHIELD, she could’ve done so without having a job in the organization.

For now, it’s time to focus on the mission.

Deathless prompts, here we go:

1. A marriage is a private thing. It has its own wild laws, and secret histories, and savage acts, and what passes between married people is incomprehensible to outsiders. We look terrible to you, and severe, and you see our blood flying, but what we carry between us is hard-won, and we made it just as we wished it to be, just the color, just the shape.

Deathless prompt number two:

You will always go into that tent. You will see her scar and wonder where she got it. You will always be amazed at how one woman can have so much black[red] hair. You will always fall in love, and it will always be like having your throat cut, just that fast.

PATTERN: The behaviour and daily routine of an operative that makes his/her identity unique.

Fic, World serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs, PG 13, (6/12)

Okay, there's going to have to be a bit of follow the bouncing ball going on here. I wrote a fic which encompasses all twelve of these espionage terms. Don't worry, I'll link to the next part of the series at each drabble, and I will also have it posted in its entirety at AO3 and eventually at my personal journal.

The espionage term is referenced in some way in the drabble.

Title is taken from It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by R.E.M.

Warnings (for the whole series): minor violence and swearing

Natalia Alianovna Romanova, no, Natasha Romanoff, she corrects herself, looks around the room which had been assigned to her at SHIELD. She’s not surprised that Fury had offered her a job at SHIELD, not after she had outlined the full extent of her resume, which had been previously known only to her. The only stipulation was that, for the moment, she was on probation until a time which Director Fury deemed suitable. It meant she’d have a backup team with her at all times, as well as Clint Barton, who had vouched for her, just in case she went rogue and they had to quickly take her down. Not that they would be able to easily, she thought. She’s the best (ex-)KGB agent out there, and no one compares to her.

Natasha Romanoff is the latest identity she’s taken on, but one she feels comfortable with. She’s changed her name so many times, has been unmade and remade by others, and has so much blood on her hands that it’s nice to become someone else. With Natasha Romanoff, a name that she chose, not one chosen for her, she’ll be able to start balancing the red in her ledger.

Coulson looks up from the cover he’s working on when he hears a knock on his office door.

“Come in,” he calls.

Clint slides into the room having not opened the door any further than necessary. “Hello, sir.”

“Barton,” Coulson nods. “What would you like to speak to me about?”

“This mission, sir.” Coulson watches as Clint relaxes into a chair in front of his desk.

“What about it?”

“I find it disappointing that this is her first mission with just me as her assistance. She was ready for solo missions six months ago. Hell, she was ready for solo missions when she first joined SHIELD. She didn’t have to be put on probation for eighteen months, or to have a team behind her to make sure she didn’t screw up.”

“I understand your concerns, Agent, but it was Fury’s decision to put her on probation for this long. We had to be sure.”

Clint leans forward. “How sure did you have to be? How does putting her on probation guarantee her not going to turn against us? She could have rebelled against SHIELD on the first night, but she didn’t.”

“I understand your concerns, but that doesn’t change things.”
