ATTF: MCU versus Comics: To Choose or Not to Choose?
Dear Comm Members (those of you who haven't scattered yet out of fear of the new LJ Terms of Service):

I think most of us here are fans of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and its progenitor/parellel universe, the Marvel Comics and their various divergent versions (616, Ultimates, Fraction/Aja, Edmunson/Noto ...).  Because once you love Clint and Natasha, you can't get enough of them - I know I've been digging up even some vintage versions of them since the days when I professed complete ignorance of the comics 'verse.

So tell us - do you have a preference?  Slight or definitive?  Do you prefer terse, flinty-eyed, Ultimates-inspired Hawkdad from the MCU; the human-car-crash-but-still-professional Fraction version; or the atonement-driven Occupy Avengers guy in the tac suit?  Do you harken back to the femme fatale assassin of the 616; or do you prefer the sarcastic Avengers whisperer played by Scarlett Johansson, or the guilt-ridden, liquid-eyed cat lover created by Phil Noto?

Or do you do pick and choose what you like and mash them up into the kind of convergent whole Marvel never seems to quite manage?

And while you're at it, do you have any recs you can share for your favourite fanfic version of Clint and/or Natasha (whether inspired by one of the "originals" or completely different)?

And finally, do you foresee any convergence of the comics verse and the MCU in the forthcoming Avengers 3 and 4?

The floor is yours!

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Ooh!

Okay, I'd say I base a lot of my Clint portrayals on Fraction!Clint. As a character, I like all his nuances and contradictions, like how he can't take care of himself but would do anything to take care of his friends, how he's reckless and has low self-esteem in a realistic and really human way. When paired with Natasha, I like how he's hyper-competent at his job at a level that impresses her, but that he's also a goof who teaches how how to relax every so often and care for/take care of other people.

As for Natasha, I depend on 616 for her backstory and history since there's not a ton in the MCU itself. I generally mash everything up more with her, I guess? And I draw more from different sources depending on what I'm writing (different versions of Natasha for different purposes, much like the Black Widow would do :D) She is always, to me at least, sarcastic and affected by guilt and aloof to some level or another.

I have no idea what to expect from the MCU going forth when it comes to these two, but I'd actually love to see Clint move towards what we see in the Fraction series. It would be so interesting to me if Laura left Clint when he goes to jail, not because I'm anti-Laura/kids/farm but because I think it could show real and lasting consequences from Civil War in a way that Marvel doesn't usually do. In my crazy headcanon, divorced Clint moves to Bed-Stuy and is A Human Disaster for a while until he's [A] discovered and adopted by Kate, or [B] his estranged daughter Lila plays the role of Kate taking up the mantel of Hawkeye instead. Of course, this will never happen, but I think it could be cool!

I started out with purely MCU Clint, never having read a Marvel comic until I got totally obsessed. When I started reading Fraction/Aja Hawkeye, I was at first appalled at the slightly sad-sackishness, but that changed when a friend urged me to buy the back issues and I got to the two with the tape. And lo! I realized there was actual depth to the character, and I became hooked. By Issue #19 I was gone, baby, gone. The Edmunson/Noto Natasha I adored from the start. So my Clint and Natasha kind of ... morphed a little. By now I think they're total mash-ups.

Except when I write Clint with Laura, then he's straight MCU, and when I write him with Kate, he's straight-up Fraction. Does that make sense?

As for Civil War consequences... I fear that Tony's slip of the tongue in the Raft jail spells the end of Clint's family, as it did in Ultimates -- and we will see him go full on Ronin by Avengers 4. :(

I started as MCU only. Wasn't gonna touch those comics or tv cartoons or anything else. But well, they are invasive and the more I read fic and stayed on tumblr, the more those things just kind of... invaded. And confession time, I still have not read any actual comics; I've just seen so many panels and plotlines that it feels like I have.

Anyhow... pick and choose what you like and mash them up into the kind of convergent whole - THAT. SO MUCH THAT.

Not read any actual comics?? How can I make you ... If you read no others, do acquire the collections of the Fraction/Aja series - it's out in hardcover on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Hawkeye-Matt-Fraction-David-Omnibus/dp/0785192190). You won't regret it!

I just lost any tiny amount of credibility I might have had, didn't I? ;)

Oh, no - it took me eons as well. The only way you can lose credibility with me is if you emerge from reading Fraction Hawkeye muttering the words, "well, THAT sucked". ;-)

PICK AND CHOOSE. *pompoms*

Seriously though, Clint is more 616 and Natasha is more MCU - but then sometimes I miss pre-AoU Clint and go for stoic competent Clint, sometimes he's a disaster even more than in Fraction's run. Natasha is more stable to be honest, mostly because I fucking hate how she's currently written in her solo comics. This Batman I-must-do-it-alone bullshit drives me up the wall.

True (new Natasha). But I adore Occupy Avengers!!
[identity profile] franztastisch.livejournal.com on April 17th, 2017 01:27 pm (UTC)
I'm behind on Occupy but I've loved what I read! But yeah, so happy that Natasha run is ending soon. So sick of that. I want a lady writing her next. Maybe she'll be better then.

Fraction Clint is the one I love the most, for some reason I just really like with the drinking-coffee-straight-out-of-the-pot/depressed/human disaster of an Avenger and how he still manages to get stuff done. although I do kinda like the snippy MCU version, make him deaf ffs!
