Well, the funny thing is that I typed it in as a string of code, you just don't see it because I typed it as html text rather than literally. If you type an ampersand as &, it just reads as &.
It's like using & lt; to make the < sign so that you can give html code to copy and paste*. The computer will output that sign, but won't read the left bracket as literal code.
*I put a space in there so you could see it.
