Comics-ish Clint seems like an idiot until the Black Widow is told to take him out. Then he seems like a really really lucky idiot. He’s not.

Meanwhile, Hawkeye is trying really hard to maintain his hapless secret identity, but whoever's after him is good enough that it's getting difficult to keep making his narrow escapes look like lucky accidents.

Rainbows and Unicorns

On Monday Sharon finally manages to have a catch-up lunch with Natasha, after months of the two of them being at different SHIELD sites, in different time zones, or just plain busy. Natasha is in full flow, bitching out the translators she sometimes works with between missions, when she looks across the canteen and trails off in the middle of a sentence.

Sharon follows her line of sight to find out what's so distracting only to see Clint Barton hobbling along on a pair of crutches as he joins the queue for food, road rash on his bare arms, and butterfly stitches decorating his chin.

"Really?" Sharon complains. "Still?"

"Apparently so," Natasha says flatly.

Sharon rolls her eyes. "Didn't you save his ass again on your last mission? Surely the fascination has worn off by now."

Barton grins at them, coming to a sudden stop and balancing on one crutch so he can spare a hand to wave at Natasha.

"He's saved mine a time or two as well," she says.

The agent behind Barton, clearly in a hurry, almost walks into Barton following his abrupt halt in the line, but manages to swerve just in time. Followed by some creative swearing that it actually takes Sharon a moment to figure out even with her skill at lipreading. Points to that guy.

"Be honest, it's weighted more in your favour though, right?" Sharon says as she turns her head to look across the table at Natasha.

Who's smiling at Barton and starting to raise her own hand in response.

"Oh my god," Sharon says, "you're embarrassing yourself."

"I know," Natasha replies through gritted teeth, but she still waves back.

On the other side of the canteen Barton beams. Add in the blond hair and six foot whatever height and he's like a damn lighthouse, stationary and glowing in the middle of the sea of people moving around him.

“I thought we were supposed to be bitching about the translators in Intel Team Theta and the newbies I have to train in body language,” Sharon complains, stabbing at her salad and lasagne. “Not boys. What are we, fifteen?”

"I was killing people at fifteen," Natasha says, digging back into her own lunch.

"Probably a better use of your time."

“True.”

Maybe they shouldn’t joke about child assassins, but a lot of people develop a dark sense of humour in their line of work and if it doesn’t do any harm then Sharon doesn’t see the harm in it. Just because they’re the good guys doesn’t mean that they have to be nice all of the time.

"Bobbi Morse married him, though," Natasha says a few minutes later, “so it’s not just me.”

"Then she divorced him," Sharon points out.

"I'm not saying that I don't have a problem - "

"Oh, you definitely have a problem.” She wouldn’t usually interrupt someone, but god, “You’ve had a problem for years. I swear I can recite the whole Barton Monologue off by heart at this point.” Sharon dumps her cutlery on her empty plate, flutters her eyelashes dramatically, and continues in a breathy voice. “It’s not just the arms, Sharon. He’s so kind. He rescued kids, a baby, a whole shelter full of puppies, and it was the cutest thing. Once someone joked that I was his work wife and he gave them an earful for being sexist, before saying that he was mine. He’s so perfect he shits rainbows and unicorns - ”

Natasha snorts. “I do not sound like that. What does that even mean?”

“Really?” Sharon raises her eyebrows. “Well gosh, Councillor, perhaps it was more ‘he’s so irritating, bozhe moĭ, how can a man be that dumb off the job when he’s that competent in the field. How has he even survived this long wearing his heart on his sleeve - ’”

"Okay. Feel free to stop at any time.” Natasha bites her lip to keep herself from smiling.

Sharon grins in victory and rewards herself with the brownie that she’d chosen for dessert.

“I need to get over this,” Natasha says, swirling a spoon around in her yoghurt. “He’s my partner, nothing more, and I'm lucky he's able to see me as that and not just someone he spared once.”

“So you say, almost every time it comes up.”

They eat quietly for a moment before Natasha puts her spoon down and says decisively, “So, set me up with someone.”
