"That was crap Barton."

Natasha unzips the ballgown without preamble and slips out of it, leaving her in a short black slip that doesn't cover nearly enough for Clint's comfort. He reverts to the tried and true.

"Well I'm still adjusting to the whole three-quarter time thing, but I didn't think my carriage was half bad."

She glares. "You know what I mean."

"Nat, I hardly ever know what you mean."

She holds up her hands like she's considering strangling him. "You're just--" she sputters. "I mean, I know you usually stay behind the scenes, but sometimes you have to be out there--"

"Like tonight," he continues calmly.

"Like tonight," she mimics, "and there's no way in hell anyone actually believed we were a couple."

He wrinkles his brow. "Sure they did."

"Please."

"But ... we were dancing."

"Hardly."

"And I was holding you close."

"Maybe if I was your sister."

Clint sits up a bit, no longer pretending to be offended. "You calling my skills of seduction into question, Romanoff?"

"What skills?" she counters and slips off her shoes, stalking across the carpet towards him until he can't tell whether she has violence on her mind or--

Suddenly his brain shuts off as she throws a leg over his lap. Now those gorgeous, deadly thighs are straddling his as she props her arms on his shoulders.

"Nat," he manages, his voice registering at twice its normal octave, "what the hell are you doing?"

"Training session." She brushes her lips across his and its like a jolt of electricity running through his veins. She slides her hands up his arms and across his shoulders, rakes her hands through his hair and leans down until her mouth is just a breath away from his. "This has to look believable."

The better part of three years' worth of nighttime fantasies is sitting half dressed with her arms wrapped around him, and it's a miracle he can string together enough words to form a sentence at all.

"Believable huh?" he manages, his voice back to a respectible baritone.

She nods.

He can't read her eyes, has no idea what this is but decides in an instant that he doesn't care. He lets his hands wander up her legs until they rest loosely on her waist. "Guess you better show me how it's done then."

He never takes his eyes off hers; whatever dare this is, he won't be the one to back down first. She considers for a moment, then gives him a wicked smile.

She brushes her lips against his once, twice, and then seals them together.
