Fic: "In the Service" -- Chapter 2 is up

Pleased to say that Chapter 2 came in ahead of schedule.  (The things that 18 hours in planes plus jetlag can do for you ...)  Apologies for the ineptness of this post.  Still working off wax tablets.

This is the "how they met" part -- Clint ignoring his kill orders to make that "different call".  Totally head canon, comic lovers don't wince ...  It takes place in Tbilisi/Georgia, a place that hasn't had much love in fan fictio as far as I've seen but should, for reasons (hopefully) explained in the story.

You can find Chapter 2 here:

As for the summary, here it is: Halfway through the Avengers movie, Loki utters one of my very favourite lines -- one that speaks to the at best ambiguous, at worst sinister political reality we occasionally see peeking out from behind the aliens, the monsters, and the men in flying suits. Here he is, summing up for Natasha Romanoff's 'benefit' just what she does for a living:

“You lie and you kill in the service of liars and killers. You pretend to be separate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors. But they are a part of you, and they will never go away ...”

Well, yes. Some Government jobs are definitely more complicated than others. Here’s my take on how the guy who ‘sees better from a distance’ might feel about his on occasion.

This was supposed to be a “five times” fic but I’m working on something else (not to mention RL demands), hence the discount. Could serve as a prequel to “Going to Ground,” if you squint.

I just finished reading part 2, and I love it!

I love the evocative language, I could picture Tbilisi in perfect detail. I really enjoyed this part, especially this:
"She smiles back a little, mostly with her eyes, so he knows its real. Somehow, they understand each other, on a level he's not had before, not with anyone. It's a little unnerving. But his bow still has not wavered. Understanding is one thing; trust quite another."

And the end is just perfect, Coulson is quite the sly spy ;)

Thanks, Shen -- also for the review on FFN. As a Johnny-come-lately to Avengers writing, I LOVE the feedback! :-) They say in real estate: "location, location, location"; Tbilisi is a wonderful one, warts, potholes, crumbling buildings and all. Glad you enjoyed your visit ... ;-)

Another awesome installment!!!! Pure perfection yet again!

I'm really loving your portrayal of the dynamic Between Coulson, Hill, Fury and Clint. It absolutely reflects my headacanon.

And because it needs to be said: Phil you crafty bastard!!! I love you so much and I miss you like crazy.
(it's things like these that make want to actually have a Black Widow/Hawkeye SHIELD-centric origns movie. YOu know shit like this went down... I'm sure of it!)

Thanks! You make me blush.... :-)

But yeah, I want that S.H.I.E.L.D. movie as much as you do. Then again, it might limit the space for people like us to develop head canon and make stuff up! I mean, can you imagine if they ever did ... BUDAPEST??? A thousand fan fics, instantly obliterated ...

Hill, as portrayed in the movies ("is that really a priority right now, sir?") interest me quite a bit. Not enough that I'd want to giver her own story, but yeah -- how WOULD she deal with a highly intelligent, let's-get-this-shit-over-with working-class guy like Clint? Ah, the possibilities... :-)
