Unfinished Fic Wednesday!
Welcome again to Unfinished Fic Wednesdays, where everything is made up and the points don't matter!

I mean...

No, that's what I mean.

Today's snippet comes from [livejournal.com profile] hufflepuffsneak who did not give any preamble, so in it's place I will remind you to send all your fic to bc.unfinished@gmail.com so we can love up on ya.

And now, without further ado, the fic:

Natasha and Clint arrived at Natasha’s apartment in Chicago at three at the morning, still on Indonesian time, still bloody and sore. The mission had run three days late and involved far too much running. Both assassins collapsed into bed and were asleep within moments. When Clint got out of bed four hours later and started pulling on his clothes, including a heavy leather jacket, Natasha woke up enough to be surprised.

“Where are you going?” she asked sleepily, missing the warmth of his body at her side.

He grinned at her. “Morning, darling. Just an errand to run. Go back to sleep.” He kissed her on the head, grabbed his car keys and headed out the door before she could think of a response.

Curiosity piqued, Natasha waited for a few moments to see if Clint had forgotten something and would come back. He didn’t, so Natasha got out of bed and hurriedly threw on a simple pair of jeans and a dull grey t-shirt.

Natasha and Clint had been partners for five years, lovers for two and despite their effectiveness in the field Natasha still didn’t trust him. She didn’t trust anyone, it was easier that way. So while she expected Clint to watch her six and expected that he wasn’t going to poison her when he cooked, except by accident, she had seven different contingency plans in place for if he or S.H.I.E.L.D. ever decided to betray her.

She had a small storage unit only two blocks from her apartment that Clint didn’t know about. Inside was a selection of wigs, clothes, cash and IDs. She grabbed a dirty blonde wig, took the time to affix it properly to her head and checked the tracker in his car. He was stopped at traffic light, headed towards the Central Business District. Natasha sighed and quickly changed into a purple blouse and a grey pantsuit, hiding her face behind thick glasses. Talia Rollins got on a train towards the CBD five minutes later.

By the time Natasha reached the Loop the car had been parked for over five minutes. She cursed, wishing she could have tailed him in her own car, and surveyed the area around the garage. Cheerful theaters and stores competed with skyscrapers for space; Clint could be anywhere. Blending in the crowd of professionals seamlessly as Talia, Natasha set out looking for the out of place. There. In a small coffee shop filled with busy business people a couple sat talking intently. One was a young brunette woman in a chic white suit and purple blouse, the other a much older man in jeans and a leather jacket. The other patrons ignored them in favor of rushing to work, caffeine infusions under their belts.

The girl looked to be in her early twenties but even from across the street Natasha could see the intelligence in her gaze and the precision in her movements. She was just his type; young, curvy and smarter than he was Natasha thought bitterly. Natasha shook her head, refusing to let bitterness or jealousy cloud her thoughts. Natasha’s heart didn’t break, because she had never given it away in the first place. She didn't even have a plan in place for a betrayal so banal. And of all the betrayals to make, this was perhaps the best. No running for her life, no compromise of her identity. Just an affair. It was almost a relief, having whatever existed between them come to an end. Natasha turned away from the cozy scene at the coffee store and lost herself in the crowd as Talia Rollins, come down with a sudden illness at work and back to the train station to take the train home.

Oh right, preamble. *shifty eyes* I guess I just wanted people to tell me if it was really OOC or not.
[identity profile] jacedesbff.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 03:57 am (UTC)
I don't think so. It definitely leans towards one end of the "trusting" spectrum, but if it's well presented, there's nothin' wrong with that. :-)

I want to see what happens! I am desperately hoping/assuming, of course, that she is wildly misreading the situation. B/c hyper-paranoid peeps often do that. Hello! So yeah, what happens next??? :D
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 04:09 am (UTC)
I could tell you, but then it wouldn't be a surprise. But you know me, I'm a sucker for a happy ending. :)

Hmm, as you've asked for crit (I tend not to offer it here, as it seems to be more for cheerleading), I would say that I can't quite believe she'd jump to "cheating" so easily? Even if she doesn't trust Clint fully, she's an excellent judge of character (has to be, in order to be a spy) and Clint works for the same organization she does. There are number of people the young woman could be - another agent, a contact, a cousin, etc.

Is it Clint's behaviour that is setting her off? That I could more readily believe than just the existence of a young woman. But I think to make the jump, you'd have to build up the case more.

It's good so far! (although I am not a fan of epic misunderstandings without the people talking to each other as a genre) but, yeah, given this is Natasha Romanoff, you have to build up the case more than is there in this draft.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. I've been watching too many fun Spanish telenovelas and I knew something was off but I didn't know quite what. :)

NP! And ahahaha, yeah, that makes sense. But she's a very sharp person whose career and life depends on accurately reading situations - obviously, she'd misjudge sometimes, but the trick is selling it.

Which sadly is more work, I admit, but that's writing for you ;-)
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 03:44 am (UTC)
Tasha, noooooo...

If Clint really is cheating, he is an ass.
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 05:29 am (UTC)
You gotta figure movie!Clint is too smart to pull something like that.,,
[identity profile] crazy4orcas.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 03:51 am (UTC)
Fix them, PLEASE!

[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 05:29 am (UTC)
*shrugs* okay.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 04:40 am (UTC)
Well, I'd say that world record in conclusion jumping on Natasha's part deserves a major smack-down, as in, Clint is secretly meeting the wedding planner or the ring designer! ;-)

Intriguing, yes -- perhaps just a teeny bit OOC for someone who is so careful in looking for clues, weighing a situation, teasing out the evidence. (But that could be explained by her being SO in love with Clint that all rational/professional thought has fled... a possibility I would not discount!)
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 05:29 am (UTC)
Clint is not meeting with the wedding planner or ring designer because he likes his limbs where they are and I'm pretty sure Natasha would remove them if he just assumed they were getting married. But there will be a smackdown of some sort.

Thanks for the feedback!
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 05:57 am (UTC)
glad to hear the wedding planner is off ... :-) (I like Clint's limbs where they are, too ... especially those arms!)
[identity profile] shenshen77.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 10:37 am (UTC)
*lol* That! I totally have to agree with you here :) On all counts, but especially the arms...
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
Sneaky's Law- the longer a comment thread goes on in be_compromised, the possibility that something will objectify Clint and/ or Jeremy Renner approaches 1.

Or maybe that's just avengers fandom in general? :P
[identity profile] shenshen77.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
Don't blame me, blame the icon maker ;) I don't know why or how it happens, but yeah, I have to agree with Sneaky's Law :D
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 08:08 pm (UTC)
well, I just wrote a rant on objectification in another thread... BUT ... I think it's perfectly OK to drool over REAL arms on a REAL guy (that's just biology ...)!

Which takes me back to the point I was trying so inarticulately to make in my original post in this thread (about the fic -- remember the fic?) was that the only way someone as astute as Natasha could jump to the conclusion she did, about Clint possibly cheating, was if she was massively distracted. And yeah -- those arms would do that ... ;-)
[identity profile] shenshen77.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
YES!!! Real arms on a real guy can drive a woman to distraction, even if she is a superspy ;) Thank you for putting into words what my tired brain could not :D
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2012 11:52 pm (UTC)
No one remembers the fic. What fic? Was there even a fic? *shifty Colbert eyebrows*

Point accepted! :) Yeah, I was mentioning the objectification in a tongue in cheek kind of way. I don't think anyone in the comm loses sight of how JR is a real person and not just a collection of body parts.

unless things have substantially changed since I moved from chicago 15 years ago, no one calls it the "central business district". The Loop, yes. The Merc (The Mercantile Mart), yes. But not 'central business district'.

fyi

Question: Hey ho, newbi here, testing the waters. So did I get that right? If we're working on a fic, any kind of clintasha fic, we email it to the email address you mentioned above and then you post it on a wednesday and we get input from the other members? Geeeks, all those "days" you have, with activities ... I might just BURST!!!!! Too bad it's over ... but I'm writing a fic atm myself (yep, last FF I wrote was probably 2-3 years ago. And I've only been in THIS particular fandom for about 5 seconds but OMG THESE TWO!!!!!!) and maybe I'll send it in for next week? :D

Fic: And ... oh Tash ... I do like the idea of exploring that side of her trust issues and it seems, to me, that she isn't OOC at all. The thing that kind of picked up on is maybe the pace ... it seems a little too fast maybe? Like ... you sometimes cut a few sentences inbetween that maybe aren't needed for understanding, but would help with scene setting and with just ... giving it a little more breathing room ... that make sense?

But I'd love to read more!!!!

Hello new person! Welcome to the Good Ship Clintasha!

Yes, you've got it right! We accept between 100-1000 words of any Clint- or Natasha-themed fic you'd like to get some cheerleading on. (Basically, if you'd advertise it in this comm, it's fair game!)

We have one of next week, but it's our last in the queue, so you'd be up on the 19th, if you think you can wait that long. :D

Please do submit, we love getting to share!
[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com on December 8th, 2012 10:43 am (UTC)
Uuuh, sounds good!!!! I'm writing on two different fics atm. One is only like 300 words atm, the other is already close to 2000 xD I'll have a look into what I want feedback for :D Oh this sounds brilliant!
