All The Things Friday: Let's See How Far We've Come
Welcome to another All The Things Friday! Your co-hosts this week are [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices and [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73.

First off, a note to say we have a thread at the top of this post for signing up to host, co-host, and/or to suggest themes for future All The Things Fridays. At the moment we have [livejournal.com profile] jacedesbff for February 1st and [livejournal.com profile] noblealice for February 8th (not sure what topics you folks are going with?) so raise your hands and bring your ideas :D

The theme for today, though, is a three part rec extravaganza. You can do one, two, or all three, or just join in the chatter!

1) rec a newcomer’s or underappreciated story (or artwork, or creative work) that you feel deserves some love.

2) tell us the first thing that you wrote/made in this fandom. (We’re thinking of doing a list of people’s first works that newcomers can add to, kind of a first time not-necessarily-rec list thing, so we can use these to kick off that list. You can tell us your first thing and then tell us that you don’t want it on the list though if you like.)

3) rec something you wrote/made in this fandom that you’re most proud of, or that’s your favourite.

Discussion Ideas: how have your thinky thoughts or creative leanings changed since that first thing you wrote/made? How far have we come since the film was released? What is it about the shiny new things coming through that are different, that have changed your thinking?

For my underappreciated/newcomer rec I’m going to rec two things from the same person, in case you don’t like WIPs: galaxies in our halos and hands by [livejournal.com profile] sweetwatersong (PG, warnings for injury, short one-shot) is a gorgeous circus AU with a theme of the two-sided coin that is the magic and reality of circus life, echoing the two-sided coin that is Clint/Natasha. humanity (n) by [livejournal.com profile] sweetwatersong is a WIP (link is to chap. 3 with links to previous installments; eventual R, paranormal AU), but it’s fascinating and there’s a good chunk to sink your teeth into.

My first fic in this fandom was And Time Yet (PG13, chosen not to warn), a post-movie look at all the team from Natasha POV with a focus on Clint. I can see hints and implications in there of how dark the territory of Master Assassins can be, but since joining this fandom I’ve definitely gone further when it comes to dark tones and gotten more confident in doing that. I also think that, thanks to some fantastic discussions, I’ve gotten better at putting my meta and thinky thoughts into my fic. Most recently I’ve had a brain full of AU and fusion ideas. Maybe because I’ve read a lot of pre-movie and post-movie things and I want to sail in unchartered territory? I don’t know, but I do find myself wanting to fuse Clint/Natasha into everything *grins* and loving all the AUs.

The work of mine that I’m most proud of at the moment? My Secret Santa fic. Because I think I managed to get some meta and thinky thoughts in there, do an AU that works, and I stuck with it when the length it was getting to scared me.

What’re your three things for this Friday?

And a few things to keep in mind:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment has is graphic/images/gif heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

(1) My rec:
Perhaps surprisingly, it's not a Clit/Natasha piece at all. It's a T-rated Clint/Coulson piece (and that from someone who'll never write slash and is occasionally squicked by it). And it wasn't exactly underappreciated -- thousands of hits and kudos -- but may not be known to Clintasha fans so I thought I'd count it anyway. It's called "Still Officially Lost" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/385871) by Pollyrepeat. Why do I love it? Well, apart from the fact that it extremely witty and well-written, it was the first (!!) Avengers story I ever read, based on the favourites list of a regular reader of my Star Trek stuff. And it got me hooked. And thinking, "I'd like to try that fandom." And, ultimately, it got me here. :-)

(2) My own first Avengers fic?
"Going to Ground" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/520261). I came out of the movie wanting to know more about Clint and Natasha, what she said to make him smile at the end, what they did after they got in the car, and how they "levelled out". Done a thousand times, I know now, but I didn't know that then) so I wrote my own version. It's rated "M" because I'm a coward, but not really graphic. Was I happy with it? Yeah. I admit, I was. Am. Again, it ... got me here.

(3) What am I proudest of?
Oh, here comes the pimping ... ;-) I'm quite pleased with "In the Service" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/543070) (T-rated for action violence). It has a theme (freedom of choice/conscience in the carrying out of orders) and allowed me to shine a light (however obliquely) into some ugly dark corners I've encountered in my professional life. But my real baby is still and forever my very first ever fan fic, in the Star Trek: Voyager fandom (I won't bother linking to it here because it's a bit of a niche market), a post-series piece called "Choices." It burst the Gordian knot that had kept me from letting people see what I'd "made up", allowed me to create a whole universe to which I have been writing ever since, and -- here's the best bit -- according to one of my readers, it was discussed extensively at a Star Trek Convention in London this summer. (The Holy Grail of geekdom!!!)

So, yeah. Happy Friday! (Scampers off to read "Strange Bird".)

ETA ratings in two places where I forgot to include them.

I absolutely LOVE Still Officially Lost, though I wouldn't put it anywhere near Clint/Coulson territory because if it were I wouldn't have clicked on it in a million years. Clint&Coulson BFFery however... :P

And In The Service is fantastic. <3
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on January 18th, 2013 09:13 pm (UTC)
Well, most of poily's others are Clint/Coulson, so maybe I read more into this one. Now that I checked the tags it wasn't marked as such, but I definitely caught that vibe ...

And thanks! *blushes*
franztastisch: winchester[personal profile] franztastisch on January 18th, 2013 09:19 pm (UTC)
Well thankfully I didn't Clint/Coulson is the only pairing I have ever come across that I just... can't do.

But I love Clint&Coulson BFF stories. :D
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on January 18th, 2013 09:53 pm (UTC)
yeah, I've stopped reading those too after my initial Pollyrepeat splurge. Right up there for me now with all those other slash pairings of obviously heterosexual males .... waaay OOC for me. Once I got into Clint/Natasha there was no going back!

Oh, I read Strange Bird now and left you a comment. WONDERFUL.
franztastisch[personal profile] franztastisch on January 18th, 2013 09:57 pm (UTC)
It't not really that for me. It's more... Coulson. Coulson is the Avengers dad in my book. It's like reading about your parents having sex. My whole brain goes NO. :P

Thank you very much. *hugs you*
Ashen Key[personal profile] ashen_key on January 19th, 2013 12:59 pm (UTC)
*bemused* Just curious, where did you read obviously hetrosexual for Clint? Aside from a bit of body-language at the end of the movie, I didn't think he had any in-text orientation at all (and even if he is attracted to Natasha, that doesn't mean he's straight).

[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on January 19th, 2013 01:34 pm (UTC)
You're right that based on the movie there wasn't much to go on. But neither was there anything happening that remotely suggested a connection with Coulson beyond the snarky "give me my orders" interaction we got in "Thor".

I guess my "obviously heterosexual" conclusion comes from the entire comic backstory, which I read when I started writing Avengers. You know, that whole marriage to Bobbi thing, the pairing with Black Widow there?

You are correct that my conclusions even from that may have been premature -- having a friend who was married to an opposite-sex partners, then was in a relationship with a woman for 7 years before falling for another man to whom she has now been married for years. (I still remember the call -- "I'm in love, but he's not a lesbian".)

Part of my response, perhaps, comes from the apparently overwhelming tendency of fan fiction to create gay relationships where there is no basis in the character to do so (Steve/Peggy, Bruce/Betty, Tony/Pepper -- although I grant you Tony would probably be open to experimentation) and an immature desire to keep the het flame alive when such evidence as is available points to it. That said, I still do read the occasional Clint/Coulson (I said above I'd stopped but that's not entirely correct -- still read those two authors), especially by Pollyrepeat and Raiining, because it squicks me a hell of a lot less that "Stony" or "super husbands". I just don't see it as a realistic option though, anymore than I see them all moving into the same place and having movie nights.

Basically, straight until proven otherwise, right?

In short, I will always consider Clint and Natasha first before Clint with other male Avengers. Any male pairings will be read as bromance or BFFs first and foremist.
[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com on January 21st, 2013 09:21 pm (UTC)
I will openly admit that I do that - usually. I was raised believing that het is the norm, I assume it's an automatic thinking/cognition process but I am aware it's also prejudiced thinking and that there are plenty of people who don't see the world in the same way as I do. I try to be aware of that, and do my best not to be offensive to others.

As for Clint, and Clint/Natasha, since I ship them like burning, it's extremely hard (read: impossible) for me to ship them with other people, gay or straight. I like them as a pair and I'll avoid Clint/someone else and Natasha/someone else except if its a past relationship. My fannish time is limited and I prefer to spend it on a pairing that makes my heart tick, so. *G*
[identity profile] lilac-ayame.livejournal.com on January 22nd, 2013 12:06 am (UTC)
Hmm, I'm not aware that is considered prejudiced thinking. I do realize we have the tendency to put a label on others and make assumptions, but compared to have nothing at all is quite unsettling, we are not good in dealing with unknowns and the norm is the safest way to start.

It becomes more important how to act towards that difference from the norm, as a mature human being, then we can work on changing that thinking *yeah, side-eyeing those adults who don't and hold such influence*

When it comes to Natasha, I can't see her with anyone else but Clint especially if Clint is around. But I can see Clint wih others because some of them can be ignored and considered as bromance, yeah, I'm a huge fan of that kind of brotherhood between men, somehow. That's why for me Clint and Coulson will always have mentor/student or brothers relationship.
[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com on January 21st, 2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
Same here. I just can't ship Clint and Coulson. BFFs tho? Snarky coworkers? Silent prankers who never actually get caught. Heck yeah.
franztastisch[personal profile] franztastisch on January 21st, 2013 10:05 pm (UTC)
He's like... Avengers dad. Just... no. :/

But YES to snarky coworkers. :D

He is TOTALLY Avenger Dad!

Or as me and my friend like to call him, Agent Cat Wrangler. :D

Still Officially Lost is a revelation. I was going to rec it if I couldn;t think of a Clint/Natasha one.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on January 18th, 2013 09:16 pm (UTC)
woops. Just discovered a Freudian typo in my original comment -- can't edit anymore ... oh well ...
[identity profile] jacedesbff.livejournal.com on January 20th, 2013 04:01 am (UTC)
I was pretty amused by that. :-) And congrats on your fic being discussed in London!!! Star Trek: Voyager 4EVAH!!!!! :D
[identity profile] chrisfaithalin.livejournal.com on January 18th, 2013 09:29 pm (UTC)
I am super excited about the Clint/Coulson story. I like reading stories with really good interactions between them and even though I don't ship it, I will occasionally reading shipper pieces just to get that fix.

Also, I love Going to Ground. I almost recc'd that in my comment. Such a good work. And I still haven't finished In the Service. I started it before it was finished and now that it is I keep forgetting to go back and read the final chapter. Both of your stories are currently sitting in my favorite stories folder on my computer. Love, love, love your writing.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on January 18th, 2013 10:58 pm (UTC)
awww... thank you!!

Oh, BTW, I just found your Unusuals piece last night and zipped through it. Didn't leave a review (it's hard typing in bed ...) but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
[identity profile] chrisfaithalin.livejournal.com on January 18th, 2013 11:12 pm (UTC)
Thank you! There really isn't enough stories for that fandom. Every time I see somebody else say they got into the show, I'm hopeful that they will write stories for the show, lol.
[identity profile] shenshen77.livejournal.com on January 19th, 2013 02:33 pm (UTC)
Can't believe I didn't reply to this earlier! *headdesk*

Love the rec, one of my faves too!

And Going to Ground still has a soft spot in my heart, has it was the first time I read something you'd written and it got us talking <3

In the Service transported me right to the places you described and it is fantastic!
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on January 19th, 2013 03:00 pm (UTC)
Yes -- the engagement with this wonderful community, and you my dear in particular, is what will forever keep Going to Ground into my personal "to be cherished" locket. This whole experience has been just wonderful.

So maybe my rec should be "be_compromised"!! :-)
