ATTF: Everything Everything (just not fic)
Hello again, it's me. And I am, once again, hosting ATTF this week.

The theme for this ATTF is simple; Rec everything that isn't fic and also ask questions about EVERYTHING.

You found and/or made an awesome Clint Barton fanmix? Share! You made a pattern for Hawkeye gloves? Share! You found some amazing Natasha fanart? Share! ANYTHING THAT ISN'T FIC, SHARE IT HERE

And, if you want to ask about comics? Ask here! You want to make a Nat cosplay? Ask here! You're going to a con and want to know what to expect? Ask here! FREE FOR ALL, ASK AWAY. This is THE Free For All. This is when we pool all our collective knowledge and help people out with Clint, Nat, Avengers and comic related things.

And tell as well! If you think you have and/or know something that maybe others don't and/or should, tell us. SHARE YOUR WISDOM, OH PATRONS OF THE BAR.

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

REMEMBER, THIS POST IS NOT FOR FIC RECS. EVERYTHING ELSE IS GOLDEN THOUGH. AND REMEMBER TO CREDIT.

So I will start. (This is not definitive and I will add anything useful that other people know and I don't. I am much newer to this comics business than many of the people in this comm, and I wouldn't dare presume I know even 1% of the massive thing that is The Comics Industry). So! Onwards!

First, you need a digital comics reader. There's CDisplay [for Windows] and SimpleComic [for Mac] (there are others, see here and/or here for more).

Then, we have [livejournal.com profile] comicunity and [livejournal.com profile] comicmasterpost. [livejournal.com profile] comicunity updates weekly on new releases. If it doesn't have something you want, you can always ask and they'll go looking for you. [livejournal.com profile] comicmasterpost is exactly what it sounds like. Everything is tagged so you can find it.

Download the first, then choose from the second and voila! Comics. But remember! Awesome people make their living from comics! If you like them, please buy either a copy online [comixology.com is a great place to check out for digital copies, and they also have a print section] or go to your local comic shop. I'm sorry but because people here will come from all over the world, I can't do better than this. I have a feeling that comixology is American and I don't know if they ship worldwide on prints. I'm from the UK and, if my local place couldn't get me things (highly unlikely, they're pretty good), I'd look to Forbidden Planet, though again, I don't know where they'd ship to. I've only ever gone in store.

OK! Now there's the other problem. There are a gajillion comics and you don't know where to start. Well, you're part of [livejournal.com profile] be_compromised, so I suggest the fantastic Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja [link for tag at [livejournal.com profile] comicunity]. It is bloody fantastic. I'll be honest, I don't know of anything comparable that's Natasha-centric; though I have heard that The Name of The Rose is very good. I haven't read it yet.

The only way I have found to try out comics is to do just that; try. I find things that have been recommended somewhere, try them and see if I like them. [livejournal.com profile] comicunity is particularly useful for this. I also go to my local library and borrow everything that looks interesting. I have found tons of stuff this way.

The other way I know? Ask. Askaskask. And this is what this post is for. And if you have a rec for any comics that you think would be of interest to anyone in this comm, tell us please.

Some other things
> copperbadge has some really good primers for the Marvel universe in their sidebar.
> [art] The only thing more attractive to me than David Aja's Clint Barton is when-it-rains-it-snows' Clint Barton [some slightly NSFW and some Clint/Kate, just fyi]
> [art] a truly fantastic Black Widow film poster by alicexz. It's so beautiful I want it on my wall.
> The Hawkeye Initiative, if you didn't already know about it. Created in December of 2012, The Hawkeye Initiative uses Clint Barton as well as other male comic characters to illustrate how contorted and hyper-sexualized women are commonly drawn in comics.
> [art] the wonderful euclase has done a load of Marvel characters. Also Bruce. And Pepper, Steve Rogers and Natasha, reuploaded with permission.
> [music] a load of Marvel mixes by leemillers (various characters and pairings: Clint/Natasha | Natasha | Clint )
> [music] the Avengers mixes collected from all over tumblr by fanmixes.
> [music] Clint Barton mixtape by osgiliaths on tumblr, based on the Fraction/Aja comics.

A couple of questions
> does anyone know where I could get a pattern to modify to make this jacket? (Because reasons...)
> as a matter of sheer curiosity, does anyone know how con people managed to get such awesome and realistic outfits? I mean, have you seen some of those Iron Man outfits? How do they do it?
> does anyone know of any (preferably British) companies that print tshirt designs cheaply and well?

I will try, once this has run its course, to compile any and all useful information from the comments in this post into one handy post with headings and categories and what have you. Then it can be linked or used as a useful info post or whatever.

HAVE FUN!

I'll take any comic suggestions. I recently got digital unlimited. I've read what I can of the new Hawkeye series it lags 6 months behind. :P I also read the earlier 2003-2004 series which was neat too. Clint ion the comic verse is a regular knight errant even though he knows better. :P

I'm sorta shying away from civil war stuff at the moment so I'm reading the Avengers starting at siege going forward and some of the older story arcs as people recommend them. Natasha was pretty kick as in the Iron Man most wanted arc. Someone suggested I read the Captain America comics where Bucky is Captain America because she shows up often.

What's the 2003/4 run?

And I have absolutely no idea how to even approach reading Civil War, so I'm leaving that until I can get a cheap tablet or money or something that makes reading comics easier than it currently is for me.

http://marvel.com/comics/series/685/hawkeye_2003_-_2004 Here is the 2003-2004 Hawkeye series on the marvel site.

There is also a team up with captain america http://marvel.com/comics/series/16325/captain_america_and._2012 which includes a captain america black widow team up as well, but the black widow and end of the iron man issues aren't available for me to read yet.

Hawkeye: Blind Spot (http://marvel.com/comics/series/13731/hawkeye_blind_spot_2011)I honestly didn't know existed until I went to look up the url for 2003-2004 hawkeye series. So, I'll be putting that in the queue to read.

I've not read Hawkeye & Mocking Bird (http://marvel.com/comics/series/9896/hawkeye_mockingbird_2010) yet because there are other things I'd rather read first.

Most of these you can find on comixology as well if you do a search for hawkeye. http://www.comixology.com/search?search=Hawkeye

Naturally, since I got Marvel digital unlimited for my b-day I've been reading them there.

If you can get The Name of the Rose (Black Widow, vol 6, 1-5), definitely read it. It's an amazing Natasha arc, IMO, the best one out there. It's not Clint/Natasha but it's fantastic.

Black Widow, vol 6, 6-8, is also good, and then carries on to Widowmaker (um, 1-6? maybe?) and ends up in a crossover with Hawkeye and Mockingbird.

Also Natasha, Itsy-Bitsy Spider (sorry, I don't know the volume/issue #s offhand) is very Red Room-y.

Well, I got this great Black Widow poster at Comicon Ottawa last weekend, a print by Kurt Lehner and signed by the artist (he did it in my presence, so unless he was an impostor it's real):

Image (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/AlphaFlyer/media/DSC_0521_zpsf3353071.jpg.html)

Since I know there are a lot of real BW fans in this bar, I thought I'd offer it up in pursuit of charity -- namely my personal favourite, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders -- if you've read "In the Service" you will remember I even managed to stick it into a fanfic...). So the deal would be, I'll send it to the person with the winning bid (shipping's on me, but you'd have to trust me with your name and snail mail address).

But here's the hitch: I have no idea how to conduct an auction over the interwebs, so if anyone could help me out there, I'd be happy to hear about it -- just drop me a line! The mods of this comm have kindly offered to link to wherever I end up doing this.

So -- here's my question: HELP?

franztastisch: bench[personal profile] franztastisch on May 17th, 2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
I've does give-aways before, but no auctions. Maybe look at how [livejournal.com profile] fandom_aid does it, and modify?

ETA oh wow, no ones done anything with fandom_aid in ages. Hm... dunno then.

The only time I was involved in anything like this was for a help japan fandom thing. The aution was basically people commenting with higher bids until the time limit ran out. Then whoever won made a payment to the charity specified by the person auctioning and emailed a reciept or proof of having donated to the person filling their prompt or whatever.

I think this is a lovely idea :D Good luck!

re: cosplaying -- they use a 3-D modeling program that renders the costume down to a flat, unfolded 2-D pattern, then cut and reassemble the pieces using either fiberglass or EVA foam, then mud it, sand it, and paint it. Yes, it is precisely as much of a pain as it sounds.

not that we have an assembly line going on in the house or anything. (Mass Effect 2, I think. I stopped asking a long time ago...)
franztastisch: winchester[personal profile] franztastisch on May 17th, 2013 10:08 pm (UTC)
Seriously? Shit. That... sounds so expensive. :( Alas by bank account.

(Though I have no idea who I'd dress up as, to be honest. Thor probably, because that'd be awesome and I wouldn't have to do anything about my hair. Or.. Lady Thor, if that's a thing that exists.. )

I'm not sure if this is in the rules, but the costume talk reminded me of a question I had about Clint and Natasha's suits...especially Clint's. Why is it colored? I know its purple in the comics but I can't wrap my head around why it needed to be that burgundy color in the film in regards to someone at SHIELD coming up with it and being like "oh, this is going to look so pretty!" Same with BW's belt...like is that necessary? I would think just black for both would make more sense, kwim?

Unless it was all Coulson wanting to add some flair.

Not saying I don't LOVE the costume and want it changed, just that it seems like an odd choice when I really think about it. I have never read the comics btw.
[identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com on May 17th, 2013 11:00 pm (UTC)
I'm guessing it is the Ultimate Hawkeye is reasone why MCU has purple and red.
Image (http://sciencefiction.com/2011/09/02/comic-book-review-ultimate-hawkeye-1/)

Looks like Ultimate Black Widow as well. Which personally iI think is better than hte gold coin belt movie wise.

:P I linked a picture to Ultimate Hawkeye and Ultimate Black Widow which I think heavily influenced the costumes. It got marked as spam again. *la sigh* At anyrate it is a good thing they went with ultimate hawkeye costume over the classic marvel hawkeye look. I'm guessing the reason they went with heavily ultimates influenced costumes is because that comic universe is suppose to be more "real."

I think, really, it's for a form of "brand recognition". A real military organisation would never do something like that, but because they're supposed to be easily recognisable superheroes, they need some of their comics costume so people know they're different from the regular SHIELD people. And the Ultimates costumes are better that Hawkeye's horrible purple monstrosity. (Yes, yes I know it's classic Hawkeye, doesn't mean I like it.)

Liu's Name of the Rose is actually so good it's spoiled me for all other comics, NGL. And the Fuck Yeah Black Widow tumblr is an excellent work break.

This is my favorite graphic, and pic for a movie poster if the Black Widow movie ever happens.

No time to read all the comments before bedtime for me, but in regards to cosplay, some good resources are:

The Replica Prop Forum

The Superhero Costuming Forum

cosplay.com

I find the first two far more helpful, personally. Sometimes there is no substitute for other fans helping out because they've been there!

But yes, 3D to 2D rendering, mold, paint, repeat.

And there is no doubt in my mind that some of my cosplays are the most expensive outfits I own. And if you add the time I've put into them? Plus blood, sweat, and yes, tears? They are expensive. But they're worth it.

Also, that jacket? I think it'd be pretty easy to modify something as simple as an old Member's Only type jacket from a thrift store. Or find a simple motorcycle pattern and make it from scratch. I'd have too research more to help more.
franztastisch: change my world[personal profile] franztastisch on May 18th, 2013 05:41 pm (UTC)
What's a Member's Only jacket? And I looked at motorcylce patters but they all have the sideways zip, and I'm really not confident enough in my ability to modify patterns. It's been years since I've tried making my own clothes. But any information on this subject would be gratefully recieved! I'm completely in the dark here.
