ATTF: Food
Today's All The Things Friday is about, you guessed it, FOOD.

What are Clint and Natasha's favourite foods? Do they have any memories associated with certain foods? Do either of them cook? Are they any good at it? Do they have a favourite take-out place? Their jobs take them all around the world, do they try the local cuisine?

Go forth, my lovelies, and share with us your thoughts! Recipes welcome. ;)

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Oddly enough, I'm of the theory that Clint is good at cooking staples, etc. like pancakes, eggs, potatoes, etc. This is largely because of the comics and seeing him cook shirtless in the kitchen while other people actually ATE what he cooked.

I think they both can cook basics because its a good skill to have, and in Clint's case, it was an important skill to have. And for some reason I think Clint cooks more than Natasha. But I have very few ideas about favuourite foods.

I've always liked [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer's headcanon about Clint being very savvy to good street-food and take-away places though. Even though my Clint would still be able to cook, which I'm not sure her Clint can. :P

My Clint can toast a bagel, and plop a Nespresso capsule into the machine. All the major food groups! :-)

I am firmly of the opinion that that Does Not Count. :P

I could see him knowing the good places even if he didn't use them, mainly because he just watched what the locals eat wherever he goes.

I think there is something to what Scribble says about comics!Clint and his cooking (especially on the rooftop BBQ).my head canon was shaped by MCU!Clint who doesn't look like he has a domestic bone in his body.

As Franzi says, "my" Clint is really good about identifying the best places for takeout - having grown up in the circus, there was always the catering car and he and Barney didn't have their own wagon to cook. Why he looked so totally at home in that shawarma joint.

He can do survial stuff - frying up bacon, do toast, and when he's stuck in the woods, he'll kill, clean and spitroast a rabbit. So, yeah, red-blooded American male equals charred flesh. But why bother if there's a place with croissants or Asian takeout around the corner? Besides, he likes the way Natasha's eyes light up when he brings her food - it's an atavistic "hunter" instinct - bringing home what you killed (or found).

Natasha could live on Caprese salads. Easy to make, high in protein and fibre, and pretty to look at. If it comes with a crispy baguette, so much the better (besided, the baguette keeps Clint occupied while he eyes her "rabbit food" suspiciously). She also makes great seafood pasta.

I'm with Fraction on this one: Clint loves coffee.

As for Nat, I have this headcanon that when no one is looking she loves caviar and bellinis. But only when no one is looking because it's so stereotypically Russian of her.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 16th, 2014 03:43 pm (UTC)
YES to the coffee thing. It's basic Clint fuel - he mainlines it straight from the pot when there is one, black.

Tea for Natasha, particularly a good chai or (with those bellinis) a smoky Russian caravan.

I don't really have a firm headcanon on the cooking thing. I've seen fic where Clint is an excellent cook and others where he couldn't cook himself out of a paper take-out bag. And I can see it both ways. It's the same with Natasha, although I don't find fic with her being a good cook as often. I've even written her once as pretty terrible cook who tortured Clint with really bad tuna melt casserole for years.

The other day I was ordering a couple of Black Widow comics and typoed Itsy-Bitsy Spider as Spicer and now I have it in my headcanon that Natasha adores spicy food. Whenever she and Clint get together for a meal they try and out-spicy each other (and this idea works whether they're cooking or not). They also pick up various spices on their journeys across the globe (this probably lends itself more to one or both of them being cooks). The other Avengers have learned to proceed with extreme caution whenever Clint and Natasha are responsible for any group meals.

Apart from Bruce. Bruce can totally hack the spicy food cos hello he lived in India for a while.

I really like that idea actually. Just cos it plays into that competative slant lots of people give them.
[identity profile] crazy4orcas.livejournal.com on May 16th, 2014 09:25 pm (UTC)
HA! I can totally see Bruce as a troll -- the first time Clint and Natasha do dinner, you can smell all the spicy in the air, Bruce takes the first bite and shows no reaction so Tony digs in and ends up gasping with tears streaming down his face.
franztastisch: libs[personal profile] franztastisch on May 16th, 2014 09:37 pm (UTC)
Hahaha oh man I love that! And Clint just starts Howling with laughter and Natasha smirks and Bruce just smiles quietly and continues eating. :D

Thor shovels the lamb vindaloo into his mouth with his usual gusto, blissfully ignoring the expectant stares from the two assassin cooks. Tony eyes him as he would a science experiment, while Bruce sits absolutely still, his own fork frozen in midair.

"Wait," Steve sounds concerned. "Do we have any idea exactly what impact this kind of stuff could have on the Asgardian digestive system?"

"Not yet," Tony says serenely as Thor swallows. "But I suspect it will be only a question of time."

The cheerful expression on Thor's face suddenly changes to a frown, and he rubs his chest.

"I am not responsible for whatever happens here," Bruce points out, obviously torn between sticking around to watch and finishing his vindaloo for his own happiness, and removing himself from the battlefield for everyone else's.

Thor opens his mouth, but it isn't to speak -- nothing comes out; his face contorts a little as he is obviously trying to expel ... something. Natasha and Clint exchange slightly worried glances; neither of them looks at Steve who is wearing his I-told-you-so face.

"Let it out, man," Clint encourages him. "Good solid burp, and you'll feel better."

In truth, everyone expects the belch to be spectacular, Norse-God-sized. Nobody, however, expects the three-foot flame.

"So that's what it does," Tony mutters as he lunges for the fire extinguisher by the kitchen cupboard.

Thor, by now, is smiling again. He wipes the soot off his chin and bangs his fist on the table with undisguised glee.

"Another!"

Hahaha!
[identity profile] crazy4orcas.livejournal.com on May 17th, 2014 12:49 am (UTC)
And that's the story of why Dummy carries a fire extinguisher at the dinner table.

I'm also now picturing Clint, Natasha, and Bruce trying to find something that proves to be too spicy for Thor!

WONDER AND GLORY.
[identity profile] i-llbedammned.livejournal.com on May 20th, 2014 05:59 pm (UTC)
I can see them getting into contests where they try to see who can eat the spiciest food. I always see them as having a bit of a competition between each other so this would just be another way to do it.

Food Related Fic Recs
Here are a few fics that came to mind featuring food/drink in some way. Anyone have any more recs?

Red Bull and Pringles (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1099089) by cat_77. Rating: Teen and Up Summary: Everyone had a vice, hers just proved far more dangerous than it really needed to be. (This is GEN but can be read as Clint/Natasha)

Orange Juice (http://archiveofourown.org/works/441873) by SidheRa. Rating: G Summary: Natasha Romanov has never tried orange juice.

The Observable Universe (http://archiveofourown.org/works/463529) by Sarea Okelani. Rating: Teen and Up Summary: As an astrophysicist, Jane studies the observable universe for work, but in her free time what she likes to study is a bit closer to home. (Or: Jane has a low tolerance for stupidity. Clint and Natasha take exception to being called stupid.)

there's people and they're young and alive (http://archiveofourown.org/works/464261) by Amanuensis. Rating: Teen and Up Summary: "Tagging your target in the reptile house in Madrid," Clint says, "does not count as 'a trip to the zoo.'"

Life Is Like A... (http://archiveofourown.org/works/684667) by Frea_O. Rating: G Summary: If there was one thing Natasha did not expect, it was a naked Clint Barton sitting on her bed, a heart-shaped box of chocolates covering his crotch.

objects in mirror (are closer than they appear) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/500435) by beneathground. Rating: Explicit Notes: Written for the be_compromised promptathon. Prompt from ashen_key: “I thought you said you weren't her boyfriend.” “Twelve-year-olds have boyfriends. I'm her man.”

I always picture Clint being able to cook. Natasha cooks, but only for sustenance whereas Clint can cook for taste when he actually gets the time to do so. I always picture circus foods, like the smell of popcorn or funnel cake, bringing back memories for Clint and Natasha gets nostalgic over traditional Russian foods, like things with pickles. I don't see them eating take-out all that often, but I see them eating Chinese a lot. They probably do try the food from around the world because honestly there's no reason not to.
