ATTF: Real World Building
Yo yo! This is probably only the third time I’ve hosted ATTF. I should probably get better at that.

Anyway, my topic is world building; but specifically “real world building”. So, just as the MCU is attempting to fit Marvel characters into our world, what do you– in your stories if you write, or your headcanons/drawings if you don’t – do to make them real? How do you anchor things to the now – the real world as we experience it? Or even just what do you think?

For example: nottonyharrison on tumblr/AO3/deviantART runs the MediAvengers – basically tying to imagine what the real world media would make of the Avengers. Or there are many of [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer's stories that are anchored in the real life workings of the military and international politics (or as close as she can make it without, you know, state secrets being involved. :P)

Similarly: I, as part of my [livejournal.com profile] avengers_remix, suddenly had 101 questions about what people thought would be the real world impacts of certain MCU events, which sparked a very interesting discussion about international politics, cooperation and public reaction over on my journal.

Also: there was a discussion on tumblr (which I will link if someone can find it for me) about how Natasha being ex-KGB, and not as old as Steve is (as she is in comics), is actually perfect for the character she’s portraying – something about chaos and the fall of communism and the USSR – completely rooting her MCU character in real-world events.

So really, this is a little wider than just Clint and Nat, but I was wondering; what do you all think? What real world events would have shaped these characters? How does the war on terror affect Steve? What about Tony and Anonymous, the ‘cyber terrorists’? If your headcanon is that Clint was in Iraq and/or Afghanistan post 9/11, how does that inform who he is?

And other things: In light of the Battle of New York and the Battle of Greenwich, what does the general public think of extra-terrestrial threats? Is NASA suddenly funded to the gills? Does this increase or decrease international cooperation? Do New Yorkers get a monument? Do Londoners get a monument? Do the Westboro Baptist Church still blame ‘the gays’? What does the Pope say? The Dalai Lama? Richard Dawkins? Do people think it’s all a hoax? And the reveal of HYDRA, what does that do? Is there less trust? More paranoia? Committee after committee to ensure it “never happens again!”? Who do people blame? Do people even care?

Are most people just asking why the hell is it always the Americans?

If you're a tumblr user and have come across interesting discussions one topics such as these, share! If you have fic dealing with these such as these, share! if you have opinions, definitely share! Just remember:

1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Hey - and thanks for shoutout (I think?).

I think a key to realistic world building (or building in the real world) is research, or consulting someone who knows what they are talking about. There is nothing that throws me out of a story (or causes me to back-button) faster than a premise that is manifestly unrealistic. I don't expect people to know details about the political situation in Country X, but if you do refer to a SHIELD mission in Country X, look at a map, find out what language they speak there, and what the basic system of governance is. For example if you are describing a massive street battle with nameless gangs in Budapest, remember that Hungary is a member of the EU and of NATO, with a functioning military and police force and a damn good p on the rule of law. So, yeah, either your battle is not going to happen, or else factor in the consequences. You want your messy free-wheeling shoot-out, you may want to go to a place like Mogadishu or Abidjan (during its civil war, as seen on that little screen on the helicarrier).

More later!

Now you've said this I'm thinking over my decision to have a shootout on the streets in Beunos Aires in Strange Bird. Obviously, it's way to late to fix anything but... well. Is gang violence prevelent in Buenos Aires? I don't know. I do know roughly the street it took place on. Priorities, I has them, and they are geography related. :P

And I always approve of looking at maps. :P

Well, there's shootouts, and then there's shootouts .. ;-) It's just that some people describe "Budapest" as that little scene on the monitor, and no, that's just not what Hungary looks like. (I did an insane thing the other day and checked the coordinates on that screen, and they do in fact put you into downtown Abidjan, which is, like, WAY cool).

What makes that whole MCU work so well for me is its anchors in reality. Afghanistan, and weapons sales to extremists. Congressional hearings. The cops on Park Ave ("Does the National Guard know what's happening here?" "Why should I take orders from you??"). The salesman in Radio Shack ("Specimen!"). Why I loved your Underground story so much.

I saw that one tumblr! Way cool. And I think they do it because fans now have the ability to check. Which makes me happy. :D

Yeah, having it anchored in reality sells everything that isn't. If they handwaved all the real world stuff, I'd have a great deal of trouble believing that Iron Man could fly, that Cap could survive 70 years on ice, that Clint never misses and that Natasha can jump three floors and not break her legs. It sells the IWnter Soldier and Asgard as well, and I bet you it'll sell GotG.

It mean, you really notice when it's not there. Like Iron Man 2 where they conveniently ignore the fact that water conducts electricity. I have huge problems with that.

When Nat jumps, she has a wire though (if you are talking about the scene in CA2). What I thought was crazy was her jumping up onto the flying alien speedboat thingie and then jumping off. Maybe its possible, but damn girl.

I need to watch Iron Man 2 again!!! What part are you talking about?
franztastisch: libs[personal profile] franztastisch on May 25th, 2014 08:44 pm (UTC)
Not off the bridge. It's that time on the boat when she jumps three floors.

Oh, right at the end and Rhodey and Tony are in the dome at Stark Expo and they're stood in a stream - both wearing suits which are made of metal - and Ivan Vanko hits them both with his electric whips. They would both be toast. It eally bothers me. :P

I thought she had a wire in that scene too though? Like she wrapped it somewhere (around a guy?) and then took off backwards but still holding the wire? I probably viewed the scene completely wrong though. If she did jump those 3 floors without breaking her legs then I am totally with you!

Hahahaha about the IM2 scene. I can picture the scene but it's fuzzy. Def need to rewatch! Maybe tonight ;)

Hmm maybe she did. I vaguely remember something like that...
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 25th, 2014 11:57 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think she had help with that boat jump. But not when she jumped off the fast-moving Chitauri sled ... Or when she got slammed into the bulkhead by Hulk ...or fell through the floor ... or ...
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on May 23rd, 2014 08:49 pm (UTC)
Hahahaha about the Americans (and Westboro Baptist Church). I actually thought at first that SHIELD was a strictly American organization (or is it? ).

Interesting point about Natasha..she would have been a kid when the USSR fell. Makes sense with her regimes fall everyday line. Of course, that would make sense no matter what, and would make sense if she was older too, but you know what I mean. :P

At first I was going to say no way was Clint in the army post 911, but then I forgot that happened 13 years ago, not 3. Sheesh. Hard to keep track of time when you have been living for decades! But even then, I wonder if he was already out by then. Need more backstory here MCU!

So as usual I didn't bring much to this convo but interested to read what other people have to say!

franztastisch: regina[personal profile] franztastisch on May 24th, 2014 09:32 am (UTC)
I think SHIELD was started by American's but ended up international. Or at least, that's how I play it, just so I can get some other places, that I actually know, into my stories.

Yeah! I wish I hade the link to that thing about Natasha, it was really interesting. Partially as my knowledge of the USSR is rather limited.

I have to admit that part of my enjoyment of reading (and writing) these stories is getting to escape the real world. So I don't mind if the finer points of the background world are underdeveloped or open to interpretation. Now if an event or location is pivotal to the plot, then the more accurate the better, of course. But, unless otherwise informed, I pretty much assume everything is taking place in real time in the world as I know it right outside my window.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 24th, 2014 03:01 am (UTC)
Oh, you can escape the real world by shaping it in ways you like. I mean, superheroes, no-miss archers etc are not exactly of the real world, and with their appearance you can make it more interesting. I get a great deal of energy from that interface, those "what ifs".

Yeah I totally understand what you mean. I just love the tie-ins that make some stories seem so real, you know? :)
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 24th, 2014 12:16 pm (UTC)
THIS. See my comment above ... :-)
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on May 24th, 2014 09:17 pm (UTC)
I love the "ordinary" tie-ins...like the Apple (or fake Apple) store and employee in CA2. The shwarma place in The Avengers. I love how they cut from these big fantastic scenes to ordinary stuff I can recognize.
franztastisch: ooh![personal profile] franztastisch on May 25th, 2014 08:45 pm (UTC)
Yeah I like that too. Like the Tube in Thor 2, even if it's horrendously inaccurate.
