Monthly Comics Discussion Post: October
Oh dear. It has been a while, hasn't it? My apologies.

Let us move forward, because there is much to talk about! The first being Clint's cameo in Black Widow #10. Did it give you sufficient feels? I certainly had the feels. Following that issue, we had a fun team up between Natasha and Wolverine's protege, X-23.

The past two months also gave us another Kate-centric issue of Hawkeye, and the first two issues of Hawkeye vs. Deadpool, which surprisingly I enjoyed, given my usual indifference to Deadpool. It's nice to see another comic acknowledge Clint's deafness.

The past weekend also gave us much news thanks to New York Comic-Con! The first being that while Matt Fraction and David Aja's run on Hawkeye is sadly coming to a close, there will be a new Hawkeye book featuring a new creative team next March. I'm not familiar with the new team's previous work, but people who are seem to be excited, so this is good news!

The Women of Marvel panel also provided exciting news for our favourite Marvel lady. There's going to be a Black Widow young adult novel written by Margaret Stohl. No movie announcements, but this is still interesting, right? The Women of Marvel panel also saw the announcement of a Gamora ongoing comic written by Nicole Perlman (the initial scriptwriter for Guardians of the Galaxy) and the announcement that G. Willow Wilson will take over writing duties for the all-female X-Men team. G. Willow Wilson is already doing a fabulous job on Ms Marvel, so this is great news.

And to finish off this post, Phil Noto, aka the amazing artist for Black Widow, announced that Marvel has commissioned a series of variant covers from him next year. It's great to see Noto's talent appreciated. He gave us a sneak preview of his variant covers, including one for Black Widow. And what a cover it is.

Yes, Natasha is wearing Clint's shirt.

Bear in mind that this is a variant cover (ie. not the offical cover), so the cover doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the comic's contents. But still, I expect appropriate squeeing to commence.

OMG that variant! IT SHALL BE MINE. Totally going to be stalking my local comics shop for that cover next year. *plots*

I guess we're just going to have to wait and see about the new Hawkeye creative team. I'm definitely sad that the Fraction/Aja era is coming to an end - it has been SO much fun. That new team has really big shoes to fill.

SO many feels on Black Widow #10. It just shows how complicated their relationship is. And Noto does such an amazing job drawing Clint. So hot.

:makes grabby hands: I don't get the comics (money and all) but I want to know everything about that cameo, but seriously, that cover. Now I want to fic on it. What's that in her hand?
[identity profile] morrighangw.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 12:39 am (UTC)
I think it's a gun, but I'm not sure...

Black Widow and Hawkeye are worth evvvveerrrry penny if those are the only comics you follow. You can very easily go broke just trying to keep up with the seemingly endless comics out there. XD

I'm not sure I want to read Fraction's run too much yet. It's such a different characterization that I'm not ready yet to bring it to bear. But I do want Natasha's series as soon as I can afford it.

Gun makes sense.
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 05:26 am (UTC)
Natasha's series is so great- great art and great writing. It's the only series that I buy every one for, because it's just soooo good that it never feels like a waste of money. The first trade is out, if you want to check that out :)

Much as I love the Fraction series, if you're going in expecting him to be the same character as his MCU version, you're probably bound to be disappointed. Comics!Clint is a very, very different person, imo. I've sought out the comics coming from the MCU, too, and ended up ~liking the differences, but if you know beforehand that's not likely to happen for you, then you're best of leaving it on the shelf I guess. XD
scribblemyname[personal profile] scribblemyname on October 13th, 2014 11:36 pm (UTC)
It's a little more a case of once I read something and like it, it tends to sneak into my writing, and I'm not done enjoying my straight MCU run.

Lol, oh boy, I know what you mean... XD I do try to keep them separate, and view them as such, but DAMN is it hard sometimes.

I bought one comic (the last one) b/c from the very second I ever wikipedia'd Clint Barton I fell in love with Barney Barton (so may have to pick up the new series), but I totally know what you mean...like I don't even KNOW MCU Barton very well but its obvious they are super different. I'm curious to learn more about Clint in the current Black Widow series, and see if if he is more like MCU Clint.

The scene looks pretty domestic, so she could be holding a TV remote.

If you want the Black Widow series, the first few issues have been collected in a trade paperback called 'Black Widow: The Finely Woven Thread.'
scribblemyname[personal profile] scribblemyname on October 13th, 2014 11:37 pm (UTC)
I hereby declare it a remote--of what I've not decided. I am so ficcing this somehow. Just got to decide whether to work it into something already on the plate or give it something new.
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on October 14th, 2014 01:25 am (UTC)
Well, Clint looks pretty happy, so... ;)
[identity profile] enigma731.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 01:16 am (UTC)
I WANT A POSTER OF THAT COVER. ALSO ALL OF THE FIC. ALL OF IT.
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 01:19 am (UTC)
It's so domestic and adorable, my heart can't take it!
[identity profile] enigma731.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 01:21 am (UTC)
DAMMIT WHY DID IT COME OUT TOO LATE FOR ME TO MAKE THAT ONE OF MY SS PROMPTS
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 01:29 am (UTC)
I KNOW, RIGHT?

Is it safe to say that Phil Noto ships it? Because that's some damn shippy official art.

(yeah, yeah, it's a variant cover, but he's the official artist for Black Widow so it TOTALLY COUNTS)
[identity profile] enigma731.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 01:33 am (UTC)
I definitely think Noto ships it.
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on October 14th, 2014 01:26 am (UTC)
He totally ships it and I totally think that MCU is heading in that direction as well. Maybe. I think.
[identity profile] spyforaday.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 01:49 am (UTC)
Ok, yes, that variant cover is a thing of absolute beauty. Noto conveys Nat's mood so well -- usually intense and/or really ticked off. Look how relaxed she is here. Ah, I love it.

And the current run of Black Widow is awesome. I loved her teaming up with X-23. Didn't see that coming, honestly.

But, really, that cover...
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 02:14 am (UTC)
I love that there's so much warmth in that image. Natasha being all relaxed and happy and Clint leaning back and smiling at her. It shows how comfortable they are around each other.
[identity profile] redbrunja.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 03:08 am (UTC)
On the subject of the official Black Widow comics, does anyone have a good sense of what's going on plot wise? Because I was having a hard time in the second to latest (iirc) issue why the guy was so pissed at Natasha when (if I was understanding correctly) she managed to get him alive, if not uninjured, out of a nasty situation.
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 05:28 am (UTC)
I really want to know who her enemies are. It's only so long I can take of shadowy bad guys in the background. What's going on??

And if you're referring to the Clint showing up issue- it's a flashback where villain!Natasha "rescues" him to put him into the clutches of bad people.

ETA: I had trouble following what was going on the first time I was reading that issue too.

Thank you! That makes a lot of sense.
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on October 14th, 2014 01:27 am (UTC)
I....need to look at this again. B/c I had no idea what on earth was going on. Except that Clint is super hot. lol. Thanks for clarifying!

No worries :)

I love Fraction's Hawkeye so much, as much as I'd like to support the character, given I already spend too much on comics...I don't think I'll pick up the new Hawkeye book unless people are absolutely raving about it.

I find one of my favorite things about Fraction's Hawkeye is that for much of the books he isn't a "super" hero. He's just a guy, trying to do the right thing by the people around him and sometimes it work and sometimes it doesn't and either way he's really trying, and I find something genuinely inspirational in all that. Plus....I <3 Kate. After the last issue with her, I'm really excited to see where they take it and how they wrap the book up, but I will probably just leave it at that.

I've liked Hawkeye vs Deadpool quite a bit as well (though I like Deadpool).

It seems the new team is going to continue in the vein of the Fraction series, so I've decided to be excited. XD It could still suck, but hey, they're building upon the current run and they're promising for Kate to be in it, so that's two points I was REALLY worried about.
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on October 13th, 2014 05:34 am (UTC)
I want to know what's going on with Natasha's shadowy villains. We know they can supposedly tell the future- is some cosmic villain going to try to mess with Natasha (and regret bringing a ray gun to knife fight?)

But the current Black Widow run continues to be amazing. Each issue has more story that most I've seen, but I still want more. Darn the once a month schedule!

Oh no, does that mean the Rio Bravo trade paperback will be the last one from Fraction and Aja? (the things I miss when I'm not on tumblr)
Hopefully the new team continue in the spirit of the old one, whatever story they decide to tell.

Yep, the Fraction run will end with issue #22. :/

OMG THAT VARIANT COVERRRRRR. :D

Okay, with that out of the way... I'm immensely excited for the announcement of the new Hawkeye run, though that's mostly related to the promise of Kate being in it a lot, so it's not really on topic for this comm, lol. Hawkeye vs. Deadpool has it's weaknesses, but it's great to see a comic that gives more than a brief nod to the Fraction series, so I'm happy. Also, Clint and Wade are hilarious and adorbs, and, once again, Kate. Heh. And Clint's appearance in Black Widow was one of the better 'guest spots', I think, though I'm not generally a fan of the concept of the second arc. But hey. More Noto!Clint, who am I to complain about that? XD Also liked that they had her team up with Laura, even though I only read the X-23 origins comics since, ho boy, that girl's story is too much tragedy for even me to stomach.

That novel sure sounds interesting!
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on October 14th, 2014 01:47 am (UTC)
Yeah, I liked having X-23 with Natasha, but her solo stuff is very tragic (and the art in the run I read was objectifying as heck, which given the subject matter was extremely not cool).
i was born difficult for myself: Marvel Black Widow gun[personal profile] geckoholic on October 14th, 2014 07:27 pm (UTC)
I read a summary of it after I read the first run, but, errrr. Yeah. Nope. Sorry. I did want to keep reading to get to the Noto run, but that, just. No. I'm thick-skinned with that stuff usually, but I have limits on occasion. XD

Late to the party ... love that variant cover. Whoever drew me for the Secret Santa -- you know where I said something to the effect that I'd be happy with whatever you want to write? That totally covers this cover .... if you wanted to write about it, that is ... just saying .... ;-)
