ATTF: Music

Happy friday, everyone! (Or possibly Thursday, I’m not sure where in the world the rest of you are)

This week, I'd like to see what you all think about music, both in universe and in fandom. Because everyone likes music, right?

In-Universe
Now, we all know that Tony Stark loves ACDC, but what do our two favourites listen to? Does Natasha listen to classical Russian? Does Clint listen to American rock? Or do they roll their eyes at these potential clichés and go their own way?

Do they listen to music to relax? While they work out or spar? To fall asleep? When they’re in the mood, do they make cheesy soundtracks for their missions? Do they swap music recommendations regularly?

Or, maybe, one of them didn't really have much music taste, and the other keeps recomemending stuff. Or perhaps neither of them are that interested in music, and they're laughing at us all.

Do either of them sing, or play an instrument?

Fandom
I know we have a fanmix tag on this journal, and someone must run the 8tracks account, so it’s probably safe to say you like fanmixes.

What do you look for in a mix? Lyrics? Style? A theme that runs through each song?

Have you ever heard a song and just gone: that’s it, this is perfect, there will never be a better song for Clint/Nat/Clintasha? What song is it?

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

I listen to a TON of music, and so I can safely say there are waaay too many songs that make me think of them, but generally speaking, I hear Within Temptation and I think of them.

Fanmixes. Eh. I just want something that actually makes me think of them and fits them lyrically that also doesn't dive into hard rock, a genre I dislike.

SAME. I have my music streaming service running whenever I'm on the computer, always at random, and, well... My main fandom is where all the songs make sense, so our spy babies also come up a lot. XD

Ohhh, icon! \o/

Music is what gets me through the day. I have so (too?) many personal playlists dedicated to these two. While I am a product of the 80s (hair bands and alternative), I find more modern tunes make up my most popular mixes. There are two songs that, I swear, were written just for them: "My Demons" from Starset (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSvOTw8UH6s/) and "The High Road" from Three Days Grace (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypl0gPtk0tA/). They're on the harder side of rock, which is my preference, but the lyrics just seem perfect to me.

I think Nat listens to classical music to relax and gives Clint a hard time about his classic rock. But when she's training alone, she snags his playlist(s) and enjoys the workout. And one time, when she actually takes his Stark MP3 player, she stumbles upon a password-protected playlist. When she hacks the code and listens to the songs, she's stunned at the emotional depth. Could these songs be about her? About them?

Honestly, I could write a book about how I connect music with these characters.

I love the idea of Clint making a mix for them, so cute

I think Clint listens to old country - the classics, the stuff that's twangy and sad. Also, John Hiatt. Lots and lots of John Hiatt. Classic rock too, definitely, but no current country, and nothing too syrupy. But the old, thumpy, sometimes religious stuff that you'd hear out of a pickup, full of static, as they're in the outskirts of a town putting up the tents.

It's possible I think of Clint as a time-traveler from the 1930s sometimes.

I think anyone who's read my stories will know that my head canon equates Clint with Springsteen: Working class background, simple language, raw stories of surprising depth -set to music that blows you away.

Natasha? It's trite to say "Tchaikovsky", so I won't. I'm thinking more sophisticated female jazz(ish) stuff. Diana Krall, Norah Jones. The occasional Billie Halliday.

I don't do play lists and I don't write song!fic, but I have been known to find titles for stories of my assassins in lines that jumped out at me from a song: "Show a Little Faith" and "Locust Wind," plus every last heading in "Highway of Diamonds". (Maybe that means I DO song!fic? hmmh.)

Agree with all of this.
[identity profile] lamortducygne.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 04:01 am (UTC)
I definitely agree that Tchaikovsky is kind of cliche, but I really really think that Natasha would like other Russian composers. Especially Soviet-era ballet composers; there's some kind of angry sound in a lot of pieces I personally enjoy, so I'm sort of projecting. But like, Prokofiev and Shostakovich come to mind, for me, as composers that Natasha could enjoy.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 04:20 am (UTC)
Rachmaninoff, sure. Prokofiev, maybe. Shostakovich? Emmm .... (Now I'm projecting ...) ;-)

[identity profile] lamortducygne.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 05:11 am (UTC)
I might have spent today listening to the Bright Stream and Cinderella, so...

Projections everywhere.

(I am kind of tired of Natasha and Swan Lake being put together, though. Speaking of ballet music.)
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 05:22 am (UTC)
It will be interesting to hear what music is playing in that brief ballet scene seen in the Age of Ultron trailer, when we finally get the whole thing.

Ladies and gents, place your bets! :-)

PS: I'm betting for something subtle, like Les Sylphides.

PPSS: I don't have a swan icon, so a Wibbly Penguin will have to do.
[identity profile] lamortducygne.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 05:38 am (UTC)
(Luckily, most of my icons are ballet icons so I have you covered.)

Is it sad that I really want it to be Stravinsky?
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 05:52 am (UTC)
No, not sad at all! Since Khachaturian (Spartacus) is probably out as being too unsubtle for the Red Room, it might as well be The Firebird... ;-)
[identity profile] lamortducygne.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 06:03 am (UTC)
Well you can spin the libretto in Spartacus as about the futility of rebellion, so you never know...

I think Clint is definitely a Springsteen fan. He's like a Springsteen song come to life. ;)

Okay, yes, I could behind that. /nods

Pretty much! :-) Like I said above, "Working class background, simple language, raw stories of surprising depth -set to music that blows you away. "

I have little to no opinion, off the top of my head, on what they might listen to, but boy, is music important to how I do fandom. XD I have songs or entire playlists for each fic I write. I fanmix on occasion, and I have a Clint/Nat mix posted, which is also the playlist I listen to sometimes when I want to get in a general mindset for the ship (reading longfic, general plotting for fic I have no real idea for, and so on). I don't have THE song for either Clint or Nat yet, though, but I do have one for Kate? Ah, probably not relevant here. XD
[identity profile] isthisrubble.livejournal.com on November 23rd, 2014 10:32 am (UTC)
I sometimes find myself spending more time making the mixes for my fics than writing the actual fics. It's a great way to get into the mood, but I probably should be writing...

I think Natasha does like classical Russian and Clint does like American rock, but they also like more than that...like Natasha likes some rap and Clint digs U2 (ok, not that different from American rock but what can you do lol)

Do they listen to music to relax?

Yup.

While they work out or spar?

Yes, also true.

To fall asleep?

Hmm, not sure about this, although I can certainly see Clint dozing with his headphones on (providing he isn't deaf...what a weird thing to type btw lol)

When they’re in the mood, do they make cheesy soundtracks for their missions? Do they swap music recommendations regularly?

This is hilarious. I wouldn't think they would, but now that you put it into my head...yes, I think they do. I think Natasha started it and Clint rolled his eyes at first, then indulged her, and now is an eager participant.

Or, maybe, one of them didn't really have much music taste, and the other keeps recomemending stuff. Or perhaps neither of them are that interested in music, and they're laughing at us all.

NO! LIES ALL LIES!

Do either of them sing, or play an instrument?

Of course! Clint plays the guitar and the piano and the drums, and is an awesome singer (you know, exactly like Renner...funny how that happens).
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on November 21st, 2014 11:22 pm (UTC)
I can totally get behind this, although Clint's piano playing would be strictly self-taught -- by ear, stuff he picked up from the accompanist in the circus. So he can play a mean ragtime (Scott Joplin) but show him a sheet of Chopin, and he'd probably wrap fish in it.
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on November 22nd, 2014 01:43 am (UTC)
LOLLLLL yes, I think all of this is true.

:cracks up: Priceless! Might have to fic something about that... Maybe.
