"Auntie Nat," Lila says to get Natasha's attention while clambering into her lap with her new favorite picture book.

Natasha nearly spills her tea, she's so shocked at the toddler waving a book in her face and demanding storytime.

Laura just chuckles with no sympathy at all.

Because when he wasn't Barton, he at least did what he was told, Tony explains.

"Yeah," Steve frowns back, "and that worked so well, he almost killed us all."

"I get that," Tony replies, mustering all the patience he can, "but at least he didn't keep drinking coffee from the pot."

(Any argument that there was no coffee pot for Barton to drink out of during their early days makes no difference to Tony.)

She smirks when she says it because Clint, well, Clint always has been good at pulling people together into families (whether they want to be or not)

Clint brought her in by offering her a family

"Welcome to the family! Here's your handy Barton survival kit."

Natasha glances into the cloth bag.

"...this is just a bundle of darts and a bottle of margarita mix."

Laura grins, sharp and warm.

"Exactly. Now," and she levers herself off of the couch, feet shifting to accommodate the heavy weight of her belly. "You're going to drink a margarita so I can live vicariously through you, and then we're going to hash out exactly how stupid my beloved husband has been recently."

"Hey," Clint protests halfheartedly, but Natasha is already smiling back at Laura, the bruised edge to her haunted eyes fading. He watches the two woman head for the kitchen, a sure-footed brunette followed by a slim and lethal shadow, and relaxes into the couch. "Well, I'm screwed."

"You knew that before you married me!" Laura calls out from the other room, and his cracked ribs twinge as he laughs.

Oh, how much do I love this! Thank you. I love the details and her "living vicariously" and the merciless teasing. Just wonderful.

This is exactly how I picture their bonding happening :D All the banter and feels, it's right there. Lovely!

She was always going to have to find family

She has too much in common with Stitch, Natasha thinks, fingers stilled in the bucket of freshly popped kernels and salt. They are both of them monsters, designed and crafted for purposes beyond their understanding or assenting - but their families, though small and broken, are still good.

Yes, she thinks, watching Lila and Connor cheer through the credits, Clint's shoulder against hers and Laura's feet tucked up on the coffee table, still good.

"Nathaniel looks just like he did at that age," Laura says gleefully.

She passes Natasha a much-creased polaroid picture - Clinton age 3 months scrawled on the back in smudged blue ink - and Natasha's lips curl up into what is, if she's honest, more of a smile than a smirk.

"Fat."
