Discussion Post: Doctor Strange
Since the latest Marvel movie has now started to hit cinemas I thought we'd better set one of these up, so: here be a dedicated space for your Doctor Strange discussions. Bring your squee, meta, pics, all the things! As always, please note: UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED (AFTER THE MOVIE HAS BEEN RELEASED WORLDWIDE) THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THIS FILM CAN BE DISCUSSED ON BE_COMPROMISED. You know the drill, spoilers are not fun.

A few rules:

1) Please mark whether or not your comment has spoilers to try and help anyone who is trying to remain spoiler free to avoid that thread.

2) Do understand though that there will be a LOT spoilers in the comments to this post and there may be no way to avoid them. If you are absolutely against being spoiled then please avoid this post until you've seen the film. It's okay, you can post here whenever you watch the film and keep it active.

3) Character bashing and ship wars are assassinable offences. We love differences in opinion and discussing all the things, but we also want to keep this bar a positive fandom space. If you think someone might be hurt by something you're about to say then either don't say it or find a better way of putting it. Please keep in mind that we are about the love.

4) No, I have not seen this film yet so I have no idea if this will have any impact on Clint, Natasha, what impact it has on the MCU as a whole, no idea. So that's a generic play nice memo ;)

5) HAVE FUN!

The drawback in seeing movies in the Netherlands is the Dutch subtitles you have yo put up with. But that was really the only thing I didn't like about Dr Strange ...

The special effects are something else. You are definitely not in Kansas (or a farm in Iowa)! The acting is uniformly superb, although of course people will say that Cumberbatch is just being Cumberbatch -- he is damn good at being that though! Tilda Swinton is appropriately elfin/ephemeral/eerie as the Ancient One. That white washing thing is irksome, but if it gives an iconic male role (which I understand was somewhat racially stereotyped in any event) to a woman, I don't really mind all that much, frankly. (Plus they do not pretend she's Asian - she is "Celtic".)

It's too late at night to do any meta. Just ... go see it.

My favourite easter eggs?
(1) The sight of Avengers Tower on the skyline of New York. (2) The address of the New York "sanctum": 177A Bleecker Street. Hello, Sherlock ... (3) The younger (live) brother of the skull from Knowhere, (4) INFINITY STONE. (5) A visual reference to the Hulk-smashes-Loki scene (you'll know it when it comes by); (6) Loki is coming back to New York!?!?!?

ETA: There is a review in today's WaPo that I pretty much agree with. It notes that the script is somewhat flimsy and predictable, but that weakness is more than made up by the film's visuals. You will see things you haven't before - and that's a promise.
