ATTF: Let's See How Much Further We've Come
Hello honorable comrades, and welcome to the latest All the Things Friday! I'll be your host this week, sort of. More on that in a minute. If you want to be a host for a future ATTF, go to this page and check out the info!

Firstly, credit to [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices and [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73, who masterminded the ATTF I'm mostly copy-pasting for this one. They ran a really successful and super fun Friday a few years back, so here's to hoping that spirit will return, and shower us with loads of great fanworks, just in time to procrastinate all out holiday exchange fics :))) not that I'm speaking personally or anything, and/or cushion the blow of November holidays with relatives. One would hope.

There are three parts to this ATTF challenge/game. If you'd like to participate, you can choose any or all of the options, or just sit back and glut! :D

1. Rec a fanwork (fic, art, podfic, graphics, mural graffitied on a wall in town, etc.) by a fandom newcomer, or just an underappreciated work that you feel deserves some love.

2) Tell us the first thing that you wrote/made in this fandom. How did you get into it, what was the inspiration, was it hard to do? What do you think about it now, either in content or composition? Tell the story of your story! Link if you're brave enough :D

3) Rec something you wrote/made in this fandom that you’re most proud of, or that’s your favourite.

Discussion Ideas: How have your thinky thoughts or creative leanings changed since that first thing you wrote/made? How far have we come since the film was released? What is it about the shiny new things coming through that are different, that have changed your thinking?

We've had a few good recs and discussions on this community lately, but with the way the movies, comics, and, basically, 2016, I think it'll do us some good to harken back to the golden days. Maybe it'll give us some inspiration for the future. <3

What are your three things for this Friday?

And a few things to keep in mind:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment has is graphic/images/gif heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

What a great idea! And welcome to ATTF!!

My three things:

1. A fanwork ... that you feel deserves some love. "history is what you've travelled on and take with you (http://archiveofourown.org/works/906905)" by [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices. This is such an atmospheric and amazing AU that it (a) convinced me AUs were a Thing I could actually enjoy, and (b) baffles me that it doesn't have 1,000 kudos. I read it in the car on a glorious fall day as we were driving down Highway 7 towards Lake Ontario, the golden light and pumpkins a perfect counterpoint to the story. Just lovely.

2. Tell us the first thing that you wrote/made in this fandom. How did you get into it, what was the inspiration, was it hard to do? What do you think about it now, either in content or composition? Tell the story of your story! Link if you're brave enough :D

Well, that would be "Going to Ground (http://archiveofourown.org/works/520261)", a post-New York fic. I came out of the theatre wondering what Clint and Natasha did after getting into that car. (Ah, those heady days when Clintasha was all but canon ... :P) I had been reading a lot about PTSD in connection with our troops returning from Afghanistan, and was impressed by that scene in the med bay, when Clint tried to ask how many people he'd killed, and Natasha told him he needed to "level out" and this was "nothing we were ever trained for"? I mean, how DO you deal with what they just went through? Pure fanfic gold!! Hilariously, not really being in the fandom yet I thought I was being hugely original -- didn't realize that post-New York stories were pretty much of a trope, and that there were dozens and dozens of them. Oops.

I joined the comm a few days after posting it, posted it here - sometime in October 2012, and found my tribe! :-) Also, just to prove that this is the story that just keeps on giving, just last week, [livejournal.com profile] crazy4orcas made the most gorgeous fan art for it which I used as a cover for the story -- do go look at it!!!

3. Rec something you wrote/made in this fandom that you’re most proud of, or that’s your favourite. Hmm. Favourite? Can't really say, because I actually rather like a lot of the stuff I've done in this fandom, for a host of reasons. Proud of? Maybe "Highway of Diamonds (http://archiveofourown.org/works/759841)"? It was pretty hard to write, as it deals with some pretty dark stuff, and I was very relieved/pleased when I got through it.

Everyone should read Going to Ground. It's fabulous! (And being a latecomer, I never knew it was your first MCU fic, so now I'm doubly impressed!)

Also, [livejournal.com profile] crazy4orcas is crazy talented, not just on the new cover art for this fic, but for her other art too. Does she have a home for her art? I just seem to stumble on it randomly.

Thanks so much for the compliment!

I don't really have a home for the art. They're mostly things I've put together at polyvore.com (I'm "crazy4orcas there too).

Recs!
I wanna play! :)

1. Rec a fanwork
Roads I Used to Run (http://archiveofourown.org/series/238218) by i[livejournal.com profile] enigma731 - Lovely short series about Clint on the farm, getting his life back post-NY.
Partners and Their Traditions (http://archiveofourown.org/works/953236) by gentlesin - A short ficlet with Nat and Clint dealing with PTSD on the 4th of July. (I trolled my bookmarks for a work that had less than a 100 kudos and less than 5000 views and tada! There it was.)
Cat Burglars (http://archiveofourown.org/works/824622) by AstridV - fanart that I particularly liked of hers, but she has tons of others that are fabulous

2) Tell us the first thing that you wrote/made in this fandom.
Wives and Exes and Somewhere in Between (http://archiveofourown.org/works/4249065)
How did you get into it, what was the inspiration...
I had just rewatched Avengers and suddenly POW! Nat/Clint hit me so hard. I was also deep in Ao3 and reading Hawkeye comic background stuff on Wikipedia and I just had the urge to write after years away from fic writing.
was it hard to do?
Hard. So, so hard. 8-9 years since last writing fic, in a brand new fandom where I didn't know anyone? God yes, it was even harder than the first ever fic I wrote, way back in 2000.
What do you think about it now, either in content or composition?
I like the format. I love how Melinda May turned out. I wish I'd had a little better grasp on Bobbi, but even that I'm not UNhappy about. It's not an outstanding, stellar, tell-all-your-friends-about-it fic, but then again none of mine are, so I'm ok with it.

3) Rec something you wrote/made in this fandom that you’re most proud of, or that’s your favourite.
I'm partial to Glimpse of Sky, which is schlocky and full of cliche, so do with that what you will. *g*

Hmm. By design, I don't read a lot of fandom newcomers because I'm picky and eltist and only read now-to-me authors when I tumble into a new fandom or rarepair or find a rec, so there goes that, but have one old fave that could eternally use more love, and there fics by friends-and-faves that sit at around or below 50 kudos could use more love than they've gotten.

Nighthawks by luthorienne@AO3 (Clint-centric gen; harsh and honest, and probably somewhat influential on what my MCU Clint became when *I* was a wee newcomer in the fandom)

All We Are Not Stares Back At What We Are by [livejournal.com profile] findthesea (Clint/Natasha, beautiful writing, captivating and lyrical)

Waving Not Drowning by [livejournal.com profile] franztastisch (Maria & Pepper, pitch-perfect voices and character work and a realistic, natural progression of their friendship)

Driver Choses The Music by [livejournal.com profile] inkvoices (Clint & Natasha, which embodies everything I love about post-Avengers psychological hurt/comfort and doesn't need a lot of words to showcase it)

My actual first fic for anything Marvel was a relatively... tentative remix fic, but both me and fandom like to pretend that doesn't exist. Sooooo I guess my formal introduction to the fandom was There'll Be Fireworks When You Come Home (Steve/Sam, 7k) and it was a massive, terrible headache to get done, but I remain fond of it, and I actually don't think I'd do much about it different if I wrote it today. It's a bit different with the next in line, Catch A Falling Knife (Bucky-centric gen, 5k), which... I still like the closing scene, but the thing as a whole is, not, I mean terrible or anything, but my focus on what I like to write when it comes to Bucky has shifted, so this fic wouldn't happen again, like this, I think. It was a wonderful collaboration with an amazing artist, though, and I ~that I would surely repeat in a heartbeat. After that one followed the fic that first brought me here, Staggered And Torn (Clint & Bucky gen, Clint/Natasha, 4k), which also sort of happened to be the first Marvel fic I wrote that came easy and flowed out onto the page more than it had to be forced. (Sorry for the elongated trip down memory lane, but, for one, I enjoyed reflecting on these a bit, and also, I thought I'd trace things up a bit to the point where I started feeling ~at home~ writing for this fandom, rather than just putting the first thing ever.)

As these things happen, one of my favorite niches in this fandom remains "AUish assassins porn" and if I had to single out two of those, I think it'd be Every Night A Hopeless Lie (Clint/Natasha, 616, exhibition kink) and Dropping Glasses Just To Hear Them Break (Clint/Natasha, MCU, fear kink). Ohh and there's You're A Car Crash (And I Can't Look Away) (Clint/Natasha, MCU and 616 crossover) which I should really, really get back to, but it's a braineater, meaning if I work on this I can work on little else, and also I'm terribly, horribly nervous about how long it needs to be if I do it right and how the finished product could very would be the most novel-like thing I've ever done and I basically freaked myself out and now I'm afraid of screwing it up, so uh, yeah, hey, welcome to how my brain works? /headdesk

As for if and how this fandom influenced me, well, it did. A lot. Not so much the MCU part of the proceedings, but the comics corner. Comics fandom in itself is way different than any of the movie or tv show fandoms I've been in, and it changed the way I approach both canon and fanon aka writing. It's less static, and for someone who used to try to pin down canon to the letter, that was quite a learning experience. But it made me more creative, I think, and also more relaxed and confident about my interpretation of canon and characterization.

I would be forever grateful if you decided to get back to work on You're A Car Crash because that thing is AWESOME. (though clearly understand if you don't. just giving you some random cheerleading. :))

Seconding what Cassie says about Car Crash. I so, so love the concept of it, and the execution, and... so let it consume you! Your readers will be grateful! :-)

Awww, thank you. ♥ But see, I have deadlines. Like. At least five exchanges until the end of the year. After that, tentative maybe? ARGH.
