Creative Support Directory
We previously had a beta reader directory on the comm. This is the new and improved creative support directory - an up to date collection of beta readers and more!

1. How this works:

> Each creative support person will comment with a bunch of information that you can use to find someone/multiple someones that you think will work best for you. They're here because they like to help. In return please do check the information they provide and play nice. This is a ‘no offence given, no offence taken’ zone :) If at any point either of you feel your partnership isn't working out then that’s okay and feel free to say so. Let’s keep this in the spirit of The Best Bar.

> This is a directory for creative support in Marvel with a focus on the characters of Clint Barton and/or Natasha Romanoff. People may be willing to help with other characters and fandoms - please check their entry and feel free to ask, but be aware the answer might be no.

> Please don’t reply to the comments in this post, that way people can edit their information as and when they need to. Instead please contact creative support people by their preferred method.

2. Here’s an explanation of the information you can find on each beta for writers, and some hints for beta readers on how to comment (with a helpful form for betas to copy and paste into a comment at the end):

Username: Who you are! Especially if you have other online handles outside DW.

Contact: Your preferred method of first contact. This might be Private Message (PM), email, twitter, anything.

What kind of creative support you can offer: for example beta reading, cheerleading, dicussing ideas, Brit-picking or checking Americanisms, translations / beta reading in languages other than English, cheking particular types of scenes for realism ie. fight scenes or sex scenes, areas of knowledge that may be useful ie. medical or technical or historical, beta-ing fanart or fan vids or podcasts, basically anything way you can / like to help and encourage others in being creative!

Style: Do you prefer to IM in real time, discuss by email, talk on a particular platform? Do you check things once and that's it, or do you like to debate changes or do second checks, or...?

Speed: What kind of return/speed can a writer expect from you? Does it depend, such as on when the deadline is or fic length?

Flexibility: What kind of creative works are you happy to help with? Particular characters and fandoms? What are you not comfortable helping with? Treat this like a 'squees and squicks' section.

3. And some things you might want to tell your creative support helper when you first contact them:

- how long your creative work is
- if it's completed, a work in progress, intended to posted all at once or if you want a chapter beta read at a time
- if it’s for something, like an exchange, and when the deadline is
- the rating and warnings/triggers that your work may have
- a brief summary
- what you’re stuck on, if there’s something specific

You can also feel free to post to the whole community asking for creative support help :)

Happy creating!

Contact: First contact by PM or email if you have it

What kind of creative support you can offer: beta reading, Brit-picking / general knowledge of the UK, being a sounding board for ideas.

Style: I tend to beta read Word docs and discuss by email or use Google docs. I'm also happy to bounce ideas around on Twitter. I do like debating things, because I think it’s fun to see people’s reasons for certain decisions and how other decisions might change the story, but at the end of the day it’s not mine, so if you don’t do anything with my suggestions I don’t mind. Prone to asking, 'Yes, but what do you mean by that?' and making people embrace the oxford comma.

Speed: It really depends. In a normal week I could turn around a 2000-3000 beta read in a week or less, but I'm generally slow (because i'm thorough). Let me know if you have a deadline or what timeframe you're looking at and I'll let you know if I can do it.

Flexibility: I'm happy to beta most things in the Marvel fandom - both MCU and comics - but it's a wide fandom and my familarity with characters and events varies! Happy with AUs and crossovers, but if it's with a fandom that I don't know that limits me. Clint and Natasha, and the MCU and Fraction 'verse comics are what I know best.

Contact: prefer first contact to be a DM on twitter or tumblr. But if you have my email (which I guess means it's not first contact?) go ahead and email me :) I AM NOT SCARY AND TEND TO JUST BE VERY ENTHUSIASTIC, OK?!

What kind of creative support you can offer:
Beta - basics or really detailed, up to you. Not afraid of betaing smut scenes, big fan of oxford commas. Will also point out Americanisms if needed (ie: 1st floor vs 2nd floor which I recently found out was A Thing.) Will ask lots of questions AND occasionally squee in the beta comments.

Cheerleading - Always willing to raise the pompoms or send hugs and support if you're struggling. Occasionally send inspirational gifs/photos on tumblr for motivation.

Tossing around ideas/brainstorming - love doing this in IM or PM or whatever kind of M.

Style: Easy going, not easily offended if you don't follow suggestions, but willing to be there when/if you need it, like to nitpick a bit on details.

Speed: Usually within a few days/a week, unless fic is super long of its around a US HOliday where I'm with family and not around online too much. Have been known to turn around smaller than 3k fics in a day.

Flexibility:Not very versed in comics, so that tends to be less character driven betaing and more SPAG and basics on how it comes across. Better at MCU. Good on lots of other fandoms. Also not opposed to AUs or original stuff. Just ask!

Caveat: I cannot and will not be able to read romantic Phil fics. I just... can't. All other pairs and characters are up for grabs and I'm happy to help.

What kind of creative support you can offer: Beta-reader, cheerleader, bouncing ideas. I vid and make graphics as well, so I'm happy to help in any way I can with those types of things. I'm good with details, making sure things make sense, I love working out fight scenes. :) I'm American but I'm pretty sure I'm an Anglophile so can usually help there. I am an oxford comma devotee.
Style: I will generally put my edits in a word doc and send back to you, I'm happy to discuss at any length the changes and go back and forth as needed. If you want to discuss or do things another way, I'm happy to do so! I love giving encouragement and telling you all the things I liked along the way.
Speed: It really will depend on the length. I can get chapters back usually within a couple of days. But just tell me your deadline and we'll work with it. :)
Flexibility: I would rather not read slash or explicit sex scenes, but I'm good with anything else. I'm very familiar with the MCU and have a basic grasp of the comics. I'm also in a million other fandoms so if there's something else you need or want, hit me up and we'll see if I can do it. :)

Contact: PM will be fine, it goes straight to my email :)

What kind of creative support you can offer: Anything you need - beta reading, critical eye, hand-holding, a second opinion... I've studied linguistics and I work on the fields of literature and history.

Style: I prefer PMs or emails, because most days are hectic - no time for IMs. I'd be glad to check something as many times as you want and/or discuss. My preferred format is Google Docs.

Speed: Weekends are generally easier, although weekdays can be arranged. Any volume is fine - just let me know so that I can schedule.

Flexibility: No rape/non-con, ABO and m-preg, please. Apart from these, anything goes. I don't mind kink. :)

I prefer Clint/Natasha stories, but would have no problem with anything else, as long as I'm familiar with it.

What kind of creative support you can offer: I'm happy to be a sounding board/idea-bouncer-off-er and general cheerleader. I really benefit from external deadlines, so if you need someone to be accountable to, I'm here to help. I'm also a high school English teacher and therefore LOVE betaing!

Style: I write in Docs, but would be willing to work with Word if necessary. Since I'm usually betaing alongside a conversation with the author, I tend to take an extra look at whatever the author's been struggling with/worried about the most so they feel extra confident! I leave comments both when I love something and when things are unclear, and like to use the suggestion feature, though I won't be offended if they're not accepted.

Speed: Wholly dependent of length and time of year. Over the summer I'll get through any length of work in one day. During the school year, I'll still always turn things around in one go, but if it's longer than about 5k I'll probably have to wait until the weekend to really concentrate on it.

Flexibility: MCU/comics is my specialty, but I'll read any fandom I'm even tangentially familiar with (and original stuff, too!) I'll give most AUs a whirl, but I'm not comfortable with mpreg or ABO stories. I'm also a no-go for rape/non-con. Generally, talk to me about what you're working on and I'll let you know what I can do!

What kind of creative support you can offer:Beta read (SPAG, continuity, real-life politics)

Style: typos and grammar I correct; substantive suggestions I leave in comments. I don't dictate! The choice is always yours... Favourite method is google docs or MS Word track changes.

Speed: 2-3 days, depending on length, after I say yes (sometimes I won't be able to do it.... RL and all that). Faster if you catch me at the right time.

Flexibility: Prefer MCU and Hawkeye/BW comics in all their permutations. Not big on threesomes. No graphic violence, hardcore BDSM or A/B/O, please.
