Discussion Post: Captain Marvel
Happy Friday, International Women's Day, and CAPTAIN MARVEL DAY!

We interupt our usual ATTF programming to bring you a place to chat and squee about the latest installment in the MCU. Only this post will stay live for longer than a week - please note: UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED (AFTER THE MOVIE HAS BEEN RELEASED WORLDWIDE) THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THIS FILM CAN BE DISCUSSED ON BE_COMPROMISED. You know the drill, spoilers are not fun.

A few rules:

1) Do understand that this post will be FULL of spoilers in the comments. If you are absolutely against being spoiled then please avoid this post until you've seen the film. It's okay, you can post here whenever you watch the film and keep it active, so you won't be missing out. There is no end date to the squee.

2) Character bashing and ship wars are assassinable offences. We love differences in opinion and discussing all the things, but we also want to keep this bar a positive fandom space. If you think someone might be hurt by something you're about to say then either don't say it or find a better way of putting it. Please keep in mind that we are about the love.

3) HAVE FUN!

Where do I even start???
Look at this new girl taking the initiative to start! There were so many things, but the here are some:

1) Fury is a TRUE CAT PERSON. Like baby-talking cat person. Who was expecting that? Not me!

2)FLERKEN!!! It took Fury's eye! It ate the Tesseract! It forced Fury to keep it close! If the cat is not a cat, then the flerken could still be on earth in present-day MCU, right? Like, can it eat the gauntlet after the Avengers get it off Thanos? I guess what I'm saying is, give me Flerken or give me death!

3) Do not call Fury anything except Fury. Except for that time in TWS when Natasha called him Nick and I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING.

4) The technology jokes were EPIC.

5) The spot-on use of 90s feminist alternative rock.

And lastly (for now obviously), I came for the tale for girl kicking intergalactic ass and stayed for the story of found families. Which isn't a new story in the MCU but it still gets me every time. That and stories about agency and identity, which this definitely was. Yes there were some things that could have been better, but I enjoyed it!

WORDS?!?
I LOVED EVERYTHING?????

Carol: wonderful, amazing, incredible, etc, I love her, she's my wife, etc.

I LOVE MARIA RAMBEAU!!! I mean I love everyone else also but Maria!! Lovely!!! And MONICA!!!! I am hoping against hope that she shows up in Endgame...

I stan Goose the cat/flerken and I can't wait for him to eat Thanos, saving us all. Also seriously can. not. believe. that this is the last time Fury trusted someone!! Incredible!! I too would trust that cat!!

Slash, Fury was perfect. I loved how he was more relaxed and laid back than he in when we meet him in Avengers. The singing! His love for cats! His friendship with Coulson!!! (and omg baby!Coulson!)

Also, I did NOT see that twist on the Kree/Skrull war coming and I seriously loved it :)

In summary, I'm seeing this, like, twelve more times <3

Re: WORDS?!?
All the Fury backstory and baby!Coulson were so fun ('I collected evidence', bless. Ha!)

I remembered the Kree was dicks in Guardians, but I wasn't sure if Ronan was an exception or the rule, and I remembered the skrulls weren't always bad in the comics, but I had no idea what the MCU spin was going to be. I greatly enjoyed skrulls being full of sass, ha.

omgomgomg
I can't even with this movieeee

This is possibly the first time I saw a movie and thought "they made this??? for me????" like... I've *liked* movies before. I've definitely thought "this is a movie for me" before. But this is definitely the first time I could like... feel how much this movie was thinking of me when it was being made.

I loved how they changed Mar-vell ever so slightly and totally played with your expectations if you DID know Carol's origins with Jude Law's casting :)

I also FLIPPED when I saw how Fury named the Avengers... I almost cried AGAIn just thinking about it today.

It also got me SO EXCITED for more Carol in Endgame!

"they made this??? for me????" <3

I really liked that in the MCU Carol's powers come from something made by a female Mar-Vell and also Carol's choice to destroy it at risk to herself, with the nod to comics with her mentor's kree blood transfusion and healing her. Although technically then Carol's powers are linked to the tesseract... ?

LOVED the naming of the initiative and the mid-credits scene!

Re: omgomgomg
Yes!!! I almost yelled when I realized they made Mar-vell female but then realized where I was and avoided embarrassing myself :P I guess we'll find out more about that in Endgame maybe?

YES!!! I was floored! when I saw that!!

Oh god, this. I remember thinking, "is this what it feels like to have stuff made for you? IS THIS HOW GUYS FEEL ALL THE TIME??"

Re: omgomgomg
from now on let's just get REALLY INSULTED whenever a film is made that doesn't star a woman, and talk about how we theoretically support men in films, but just not this woman in this film.
inkvoices[personal profile] inkvoices on March 10th, 2019 12:20 pm (UTC)
I love going to see Marvel films at the cinema early in their release so you're surrounded by fellow fans - the tesseract appearence got so much swearing and gasping lol and the mid-credits scene got a round of applause. So much fun! Which: things got dire there in the MCU with Infinity War so I really enjoyed how much fun this film was. And the 90s nostaligia and how it's pretty much a prequel, ha.

I LOVE Carol! The 'I have nothing to prove to you' moment = hell yes! But her whole self, from being a human who picks herself up so many times, and her found family with Maria and Monica. Her sass and emotions and that conversation with Fury were she says she gets in trouble for it and he says its human. But how things like that in the film also aren't... apologetic? Carol is herself and if she gets in trouble for that, fine. Just. Argh, CAROL <3

Fury backstory, baby!Coulson, sassy Skrulls, Monica and Maria, FLERKIN showstealer, so many good facial expressions (the look on Ronan's face lol), I enjoyed this film so much :D

Agree ENTIRELY with your last paragraph. But what did you think of the script?

I must PROTECT CAROL AT ALL COSTS!!!

Baby Coulson was so cute?? I love all our new Skrull friends, as well.

Saw in yesterday, at the tail end of a business trip to the Caribbean (you gotta do what you gotta do, plus there was air conditioning).

Verdict? Good movie, but frankly not in my Top 3. Liked the character (I haven't read any of the comics...). Loved the female friendship, the relationship between Marie Rambeau and daughter, two-eyed Fury (and backstory about how that period ended), baby!Coulson. And the kitty? Oh, the kitty! I WANT GOOSE - would love to take him to some of my meetings... urrrp....

But - unpopular opinion alert - I found the script a bit superficial in places? The Kree/Scrull switch came out of nowhere; would have been nice to see it set up at least a little bit. Will see it again this week and will see if I missed something there... Excellent touches though in the Nineties-ness of the detail and the flashes of humour, especially from the Skrulls, which was a nice surprise. Loved both the mid- and after-credits scenes, which set up fabulous openings for Endgame.

Verdict overall: A-. Will see again (and again).

Complete agreement with the unpopular opinion: I had a great time and came out of the film very happy, but when I went to update my Marvel movie rankings on letterboxd, this one came in right in the middle of the pack (10th place out of 21). I found the end to be a bit anti-climactic and I would've liked to see the Kree put up more of a fight against Carol there at the end.
inkvoices: avengers:woman I love you[personal profile] inkvoices on March 11th, 2019 12:04 am (UTC)
I love how you have a very specific ranking system going on there *grins*. I tend to bunch them together in 'I like THESE ONES because for any faults the sass and banter is strong' and 'I enjoyed THESE ONES they just weren't as good, never mind' with my only definitives being Winter Soldier is the best plot-script and that Iron Man 2 and Incredible Hulk hover at the bottom of the pack.
gabrielle[personal profile] gsparkle on March 11th, 2019 01:01 am (UTC)
haha, I didn't really have a ranking system until we watched all the Marvel movies on the run-up to Infinity War :)
inkvoices: avengers:natasha thinky[personal profile] inkvoices on March 11th, 2019 12:01 am (UTC)
I see what you mean about the script - Winter Soldier it is not (still my number one for the writing) and it'll be interesting to see what I think when I get to see it again. It's also probaby not the strongest on sass and banter although the game is strong - I think Thor Ragnorak still holds that spot - but it's up there.

I think in the script I really appreciated a lot of the balance they built in. So for example, the way they gave Carol a bit of a different origin-of-powers story, with a female Mar-Vell developing the engine and Carol's choice to destroy it, whilst paying homage to the comics original with the blood of Jude Law's character still being in her veins and healing her. The weaving in of backstory for Fury, and the tesseract, and everything aligning with the known MCU. There's cleverness.

But I loved it for the enjoyement, Carol (the comics are GOOD, I need to re-read), the female friendships, the sass and banter, Goose... all the fun of it and the well-delivered feminism in it. Moment like the 'I have nothing to prove to you' moment of YES. I can forgive it for a lot for that, and I don't think there's that much to forgive. I need another viewing, but I don't anticipate a Guardians 2 scenario - where on the second viewing the sass was flatter, I started seeing where it was problematic, and knowing what came next meant it just wasn't that good anymore. I think it's going to be more Civil War for me, where I get excited about seeing favourite moments again and appreciate little details when I catch them.

Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was the only one. I enjoyed it, but ... I didn’t love it. it just didn’t “wow” me as much as I’d hoped. Loved Goose and Fury (LOVED!); appreciated the “friends as family” elements; the whole 90s era was hilariously nostalgic (we’ve come a long way!); and, of course, Stan. :) But, to me, it seemed a little clunky and disjointed overall. Not quite polished...? It was worth the price of admission, though, for the mid-credit and end-credit scenes.

Please, best bar, don’t be mad at me. **ducks and covers**
alphaflyer[personal profile] alphaflyer on March 12th, 2019 06:46 am (UTC)
Actually, in my first post (before I edited it) I gave it a "B+ to A-". I amended that to A- because I did enjoy it, but in retrospect should probably have kept it. "Enjoy but didn't love" actually puts it perfectly!

I think the ending was too much? I mean, coming into "powers" is one thing, but there was just ... too much. Even for someone mind-melded with the tesseract. Guess we'll see how that gets used in the next round!
crystallitanie[personal profile] crystallitanie on March 13th, 2019 02:50 pm (UTC)
So I watched it on Sunday, and I LOVED it.

Baby Coulson! That scene where Carol was rising, from childhood to the present! That freakin' Flerken!

The Krees/Skrulls twist was not a very bug surprise for me, because if you've watched Agents of Shield, you know by now that Krees can always be relied upon to behave as assholes. Plus, Ronan the Accuser.

My first thought after the movie was "Lord, now we know why Fury has been paranoid to the point of fucking up with cosmic forces". My second was a fic with Nicholas and this cat.

All in all, it's straight up to the top 3 Marvel movies for me, along with CA:CW and Black Panther. It was everything I expected it to be - flashy and funny and gorgeously feminist, and Brie Larson was obviously having a blast. I like it when actors are having a blast.

Edit: Also, mid-credits scene: OMG
