from what i've seen in fandom's portrayal of clint, especially after thor, had him very jokey and clowning. that's a bit more in line with comic canon. however, when you get to know him and his background is revealed in detail, you understand the deep underlying reason for his flippant jokey behaviour. renner's portrayal has always struck me as settled? for the lack of a better term. he finds a refuge of sorts in working for shield. not exactly a safe place to lick his wounds but safe enough to disconnect. being removed from feelings and certain mores are all part and parcel of an assassin life, right? movie!barton seems like a man who's come to terms with what he's done/who he's become and is trying his best to accept it. this probably has to do with renner's preference for roles that are conflicted/typically described as loose cannons and me reading more into it because THIS MAN.
