Camp NaNo Support Group - August Session
A few of us were talking over in the Creative Support Group Thread (CSGT?) about Camp NaNoWriMo. The site is here). In a nutshell, by signing up for CampNaNo, you're challenging yourself to write 50,000 words (a novel) in 31 days, beginning August 1st.

Since there isn't really much of a message board system over on site for Camp, I'm just gonna put this here so we have a place to cheer, commiserate, and have fun. (I have plot bunnies - literal little puff-ball bunnies with sticky feet attached to prompt cards - and I'm not afraid to use them**.)

ETA: Word Count Check-In

**If anyone needs them, the blue bunnies are object bunnies, the purple ones are conflict bunnies, the yellow ones are general bunnies (but not General bunnies), and the pink ones are relationship bunnies.

Talk About Your NaNo!
What are you writing about this month?

Re: Talk About Your NaNo!
It's on like Donkey Kong! *whispers* I don't know why that popped into my brain after reading about bunnies.

Anyway... what am I writing? At this point, I don't know if my "original story" muse would even cooperate. The "Avengers story" muse seems have to have plasma rifles and has kept everyone else at bay. It's a freaky, freaky time here on my computer desk. There were whispers of a mutiny but, like I said, PLASMA RAYS!

I think I might go the same direction I was going to go in June and concentrate on getting "stories" out instead of focusing on the word count. This might especially work seeing as I'm not aiming for an original right now. November, on the other hand, is ALWAYS original so I feel better about doing fanfiction for August. IF I don't lose focus and momentum (like I did in June), the word count will come with the volume of stories I produce.

There are a couple of GINORMOUS story ideas in my head right now. The WWII AU, the Avengers/Dollhouse fusion, and the Greece Conspiracy idea - just to name a few. If I worked those stories like mini-bangs, I might be able to just concentrate on those. I guess I could always head in that direction and see what happens!

And I think the GREEN bunnies are General bunnies!

Heehee! It certainly is!

Well now, that's a thought. I'm leaning towards the "write all the things" path myself and just using the word count benchmarks to push through it (especially the more troubling sections.)

I apparently don't *have* any original muses. Twice in the however-many years I've done NaNo I've tried to write original fiction and both times I've gotten about a week or so in and thrown up my hands and just written Harry Potter fic instead. :D

Ooooo - those all sound really cool. I'm excited!

And I think the GREEN bunnies are General bunnies!

Now I have to try and *find* green bunnies! (The pack I got only came with four colors.) :D

Re: Talk About Your NaNo!
I have the most fantabulous original story idea that has gotten about... oh, I don't know... about a third of the way written. My problem is not the idea portion of things. My problem is the HOOK and the ENDING. Now, I've gotten better at endings, seeing as I've started writing actual stories instead of drabbles when it comes to fanfic, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it all tumble together.

Also, I'm not afraid to admit it but I'm as scared of original as the next person. I love it but it's scary. I talk big and I have a goal (published by 2015! It's totally doable... right?) but it scares me to sit down and write original.

While I've never thrown up my hands and written HP fanfic (although I came SUPER close one year there at the beginning), I have taken the other easy out. I write and write and get my word count and then I stop. No ending. No hook. No story I can show anyone no matter how hard they ask. It's a word file that stays on my computer for years and years and years. I did finish NaNo 2004 only because my sisters nagged and nagged until I gave them an ending and bound it for everyone at Christmas.

All that to say that I love original but the muse stays pretty firmly locked in a cage.

THIS is the first fandom where I have written this much this quickly. The stories play out in my head and I can't help but get them written down. I cut my fanfic eye teeth on HP and figured out how to write a decent sized story in Stargate and now I'm starting to figure out how to just create in the moment. To just be. It's heady stuff!

Re: Talk About Your NaNo!
I started out with X-Files fic back in the ninties, and wrote a couple of really short (not great) bits. Same with BTVS a couple years later - I think the Farscape stuff I wrote is the first stuff I was really happy with. For NaNo, I've written Harry Potter, Merlin, and Battlestar - then C/N stuff in June this year. Of all that stuff, the only thing I've posted is a handful of BSG vignettes.

But I agree there is something about this fandom in particular that's really grabbing me. I haven't written this much or this consistently for a fandom before, it's really, really awesome. :D Heady is a good description!

So, what fandom are you writing? I would hate to be presumptive!
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 31st, 2012 04:21 am (UTC)
I'm working on all the C/N stuff I have going on! Initially, I'll probably do a fair amount on the HP/Avengers AU I'm working on with [livejournal.com profile] kadollan, but also on prompt fills. I'm not trying to do a single long fic so much as work on all the pieces that make up the crazily complete (I have no idea where it's all coming from, but hot damn, I'm thrilled) backstory/universe I have going on.
http://lar_laughs.livejournal.com/[identity profile] lar_laughs.livejournal.com on July 31st, 2012 04:46 am (UTC)
That sounds awesome. I think the prompt fills could get me through several NaNos!

[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 31st, 2012 04:23 am (UTC)
When we're doing an in-person write-in in my home region I just pass the bag around and people draw one, then try and write that prompt into their story. For virtual write-ins, I keep them handy and whoever wants one tells me what color they'd like and I pull one and tell them what's on it.
http://lar_laughs.livejournal.com/[identity profile] lar_laughs.livejournal.com on July 31st, 2012 04:44 am (UTC)
Ah, so like prompts or challenges, even. Very interesting!
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on July 31st, 2012 04:47 am (UTC)
Exactly! :D

The thing that got me through the first NaNo I finished (particularly through week three) was a table of one-word prompts. I just sat down and tried to write 100-200 words around each word on the list, without necessarily trying to tie them together into a story (though several of them did that, anyway.) I was tons of fun, and really upped both the word count and how well I understood the characters.

My first ever NaNo novel consisted of dares that I got from the site! Two characters, stuck on a deserted island, discussed how to make a cake for nearly 1500 words. It was delightful!

I still use selective dares these days but nothing like that first time through.

I was already planning to try to buckle down and work on a novel idea that I have as a sort of personal mini-NaNo this August. Now I can make it "official." *grins*

Oh, heck. Give me one of each color. Who cares! THIS IS NANO! There's not thinking in NaNo!
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2012 01:42 am (UTC)
Hi! I come bearing bunnies!

(In answer to your questions, the relationship-y ones can be anything from a kinda gen-ish friendship prompt to full-on romance, just depends. They're things that involve people's relationships and interactions with one another, basically. And the general bunnies are actually "action" bunnies - prompts telling a character to do something. I really should get some green bunnies and make them "General" bunnies with orders like "write 500 words!" on them.)

Blue (object): heirloom necklace
Pink (relationship - again, not necessarily romance or sexual): two characters are stuck in close quarters
Purple (conflict): something blows up (literally)
Yellow (action): wear a costume

Yes, you should get green bunnies. They could also be things like "write for twenty minutes without stopping or backspacing" or things like that.

I've used it a couple of times with good success. I'm more a "fits and starts" sort of writer so I can't use it often. It stresses me out! I should buckle down and write more for longer instead of taking all the little breaks to check the "important things" on the internet. I'm not even opening up Facebook this month (and it hasn't stressed me out in the least) so that is going to save me a stupid amount of time that I've been wasting for the last year. Ugh!

Do you use it often (omg, I just wrote awesome instead of often and then couldn't remember how to write often and it's only like 9:30 here so I shouldn't be this punchy!) when you're writing?
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2012 03:50 am (UTC)
Sometimes I need it worse than others - usually I turn to it when I'm having writers-blocky-issues because i forces me to work past them, even if it ends up being crap it'll shake something loose.
http://lar_laughs.livejournal.com/[identity profile] lar_laughs.livejournal.com on August 6th, 2012 03:55 am (UTC)
I get some of my best ideas when I write fast. Yes, granted, they have to be rewritten but it's exactly what you said. A good way to shake things loose!
