Poll Results! - Meet-Ups and Such
So, we've had about 50 responses on the "Meet-Up Interest Poll" from a week or so ago!

The results are as follows:

In regards to getting together for a BIG event/group thing for either Captain America 2 or Avengers 2 we had:

35 YES!(s) and
15 I don't know, tell me more?(s)

In regards to small mini-cons, we had:

29 YES!(s)
20 I don't know, tell me more?(s) and
1 Not Interested

In terms of location, we had the most responses from the Northeast (17) and the Southeast (11), followed by the Northern Midwest (12), Southern Midwest (7), Pacific Northwest (7) and the Southwest (3). Other/International had a strong response at (11) - but those responses are spread all over the globe rather than in one specific country or even continent.

Since lots of people wanted more information, I'm including a more detailed explanation of the kind of thing I'm talking about below the cuts.

The idea for doing a big, movie-meet-up type con is kind of (very, very, very) loosely based around the idea of ScaperCon, only not so involved.

Essentially what I was thinking of is planning (well in advance) around the date of the premier of either Captain America: Winter Soldier (if Clint and Natasha are in it) - and/or the premier of Avengers 2. There wouldn't be formal registration or anything, but we could pick a specific hotel in a specific city so whoever wanted to or was able to come could spend the weekend together, all go see the movie together, and then flail, squee, (go see the movie again) and generally offer all kinds of fannish support to one another.

Things that might be involved:

-- the movie viewing (of course)
-- rewatching the previous movies together
-- seeing if the hotel had a conference room we could also rent for the weekend so we had a space larger than individual rooms to hang out in
-- watching various other Avengers/Renner/Scarlett things together
-- we're mostly going to babble at one another incessantly and occasionally go out into the world for things like food and to traumatize innocent by-standers with our fannish ways.

Things we would need to do:

-- pick locations/dates and etc. (preferably in plenty of time for people to save up, get plane tickets, schedule time off and so on)
-- set up some kind of secured posts/emails or something so people who wanted to talk about rooming together or carpooling (if they wanted to) could do so.
-- see about meeting space rentals (probably take some kind of donations up to cover it closer to time?)
-- get everyone the requisite information about hotels and whatnot so they can reserve rooms.

It's still really early days, but the sooner we start talking about it, the more likely we can pull it off.

Mini-Cons are a much more laid back version of the above (although what you do when you're there is remarkably similar.

For these, it's more likely to be a group of five to fifteen people, so finding meeting space isn't so much of an issue. These are also more likely to be regional than nationwide (or worldwide.)

You still pick a city and a specific hotel, and then you basically spend the weekend hanging out together doing fannish things.

These are a lot easier to plan, and can happen more frequently and with less lead time than the larger option.

For the Mini-Con options, we'd like to see if there are people in the various regions who might be interested in helping plan something for their area. I told [livejournal.com profile] workerbee73 that I would be willing to work on planning for the Southeast, but I'm clueless about what kinds of locations and things would be good for other areas of the country.

If you have any questions, or would be interested in organizing for your region, please let us know!

Boston represent! I was active in local fandom for about a decade, although I've gaffiated since the Wasband and I split (he got sci-fi fandom in the divorce). But I've been to cons at many of the local con-friendly hotels.

If my Boston area peeps want to do something small, I'd be more than happy to host a viewing party at my place. I've got The Avengers DVD on pre-order, but don't own a BluRay, so we'll be short on special features that look like they're only going to be on the BluRay edition. *sad face* If we're talking more than 7 or 8 people, I'm probably out of comfy chairs and we need to start talking hotels.

Boston! Yes! I'm game for anything here, small or large. Will have to work around my crazy law school schedule, but I'm free most weekends.

Edit: I've got all the movies except Avengers. I have a blue ray player, but there is no room in my apartment. I suppose I could bring mine with me and we could figure out how to hook it up?

Edit 2: I don't get Avengers until Christmas, so I won't have the Blueray until then.

I own the following on DVD:

Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Thor
Captain America
The Avengers (on pre-order, should ship as soon at it's released)
(Sorry, just couldn't love the Hulk until Ruffalo took over the character)

And I'm more than happy to re-rig my TV for viewing if someone else wants to bring a BluRay. Although I'm behind the technology curve on my TV set. Darn it, I just hate replacing stuff that still works, but I think I'm going to have to break down and upgrade to something a little more whiz bang at Christmastime.
[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 01:27 am (UTC)
I have Iron Man 1 and 2 on dvd and Thor and Captain America on BlueRay. I also wasn't a fan of the Hulk until Mark. If you've got them all, I guess it doesn't make sense to bother with BlueRay.

I've got all the soundtracks on my computer if we wanted those for some reason.
[identity profile] brickhousewench.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 01:30 am (UTC)
Oh, and we should also keep an eye out for [livejournal.com profile] aurora_0811, who is on the South Shore/Foxboro area and might also want to hang with some fannish homegurls. *looks around the bar*

BTW, I'm in Lowell. Your profile says Texas, so I'm guessing college somewhere in the area?
[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 01:32 am (UTC)
Oh, I just haven't edited it. I'm in the Roxbury area right next to the Ruggles T stop on the orange line.

I am totally in for Boston. My schedule is a little wonky but with enough advanced warning I should be good. Just need to get the time off work. And most game systems have blue-ray capabilities now, if that helps. I also do not have an actual BluRay player which is why I pre-ordered the DVD two disc version so I get some of the special features.

DID I COMPLETELY MISS ANOTHER POST?
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 12:58 am (UTC)
The original poll is here: http://be-compromised.livejournal.com/106365.html

and you're still welcome to add your own answers. :)

Okay, I have gone back in time and filled out the poll that I somehow missed...

Pretty much, I'm down for whatever we have in the States. I can also offer my Event Coordinator skills if you need them. I still have contacts who can give me lists of hotels that have event rooms. I also have mad namebadge skills... not that anyone ever needs namebades anymore. *sighs*
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 12:58 am (UTC)
Don't think I won't take you up on that. ;)

Please! There are times I miss it and it would be fun to use the knowledge for good!
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 01:37 am (UTC)
Excellent!

I was never on the planning committee(s) for ScaperCon, though I was friends with some of the people who were, but I've organized weekend retreats and such, and helped set up/organize the first WhedonCon a few years ago.

I'm trying to figure out what the best next step would be... probably do another poll (several) to get an idea of where in the Southeast would work best? (I'd be biased towards Nashville of course because I love it and it's my backyard, but that may not be the closest to everyone else, so.)

And I wish my husband would get a frakking job already so I could afford to go further to someplace like Boston ::is eyeing the other comments here::

How far up and down the coast does your budget allow? The closer we get to DC, the better the possibility of getting Aster to join us.

Nashville is pretty cool and it's one of the larger "venue cities" that I didn't get travel to.
[identity profile] sweetwatersong.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 02:00 am (UTC)
Don't mind me over here, cheering secretly for D.C./close to it... (Since I'm currently being paid $0 for my 40-hour work week, less travel = better for broke grad.)
[identity profile] cybermathwitch.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 02:16 am (UTC)
Right now? The budget is pretty much non-existent. Once husband has a job, I could probably do different locations because I could fly there. I could get a cheap bus ticket to DC, but I'd pretty much have to take both a Friday and a Monday off work because it's a 15-16 hour drive. ::scowls::

I <3 Nashville. Also I know many lots of the out-of-the-way awesome places to get food and stuff.

Another vote for DC area - mostly because I'm lazy and it is home.

Who are my Northwest peeps? It says there are a whole SEVEN of them! Or maybe I'm the seventh and there are only six others.
[identity profile] paksenarrion2.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 03:50 am (UTC)
NW Peep checking in. Tacoma WA actually but willing to travel. I live in a smallish studio so not sure it would be good for hosting but I have the following on DVD:

Captain America
Thor
Iron Man 1 & 2

On Blu-Ray and DVD

The Avengers.

[identity profile] chrisfaithalin.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 06:24 am (UTC)
I'm also in the NW. I'm currently going to college in Ellensburg, WA but my parents live on the Westside so pretty much anything in Washington is probably game for me. School is crazy, but I would definitely be interested in trying to get together.
[identity profile] daxcat79.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 02:07 am (UTC)
Apparently I've been missing something, what is this awesome that is happening here? I LIVE IN DC!!!!
[identity profile] sweetwatersong.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 02:25 am (UTC)
JOIN US. I live in NoVA, _samalander is in Maryland, and flying_android is in... D.C. too, I think? We could totally have our own mini-con!
[identity profile] sweetwatersong.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 02:27 am (UTC)
Not that everyone else wouldn't be invited, too. Y'know.
[identity profile] daxcat79.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 02:28 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm in Maryland, like five minutes outside of DC, that is awesome! Score!

I'm pretty sure there's at least one other Canadian on this comm, but watch as we're on opposite ends of the country with no way to meet up. :P
[identity profile] ayreia.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 05:07 am (UTC)
That will entirely depend upon where you happen to be in Canada. :)

I'm in the western prairies. You?

Not as far apart as we could have been. :)

Anyone from the Midwest/Chicago area?
[identity profile] auctorial.livejournal.com on September 11th, 2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
I'm in Madison, I could totally come up to Chicago! Or rather, down. I had the same problem when I was living in Boston and talking about New York, gah.

But yeah, no one I know here is into the Avengers, so I'd love to get together and watch movies and squee, even if we're the only two. :D
[identity profile] sgteam14283.livejournal.com on September 12th, 2012 04:46 am (UTC)
Wheeee! :D

I know how you feel. A few years ago my family was vacationing in Texas by the border ( deciding to go to San Antonio while we were there) so I kept telling people that we were going down to visit the Alamo and everyone kept giving me weird looks since we had to go up and not down, lol. I think it comes with living so far upstate!

And I'm totally up for coming to you, I love a good road trip! I do have a few friends who love the movies as well but none of them (as far as I know) are regulars to the awesome BlackHawk bar.
[identity profile] auctorial.livejournal.com on September 13th, 2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
\O/

OMG I am so tired rn I can't even think, but yesss. We will plan something soon! Or, sometime? IDK I kind of want to squee over the Avengers all over again when it comes out on DVD.
[identity profile] sgteam14283.livejournal.com on September 14th, 2012 02:22 am (UTC)
Sounds awesome! Although I'll need at least two weeks notice so I can request the time off from work.

Only 12 more days! :D
[identity profile] auctorial.livejournal.com on September 17th, 2012 05:26 am (UTC)
Oh no, do you work on weekends? I was thinking, since we live fairly~ close we could do a Saturday/maybe spill over to Sunday depending on what we plan on doing.

JSYK, I don't have a TV or anything bigger than a 15-inch laptop screen... although I do have an empty house and a spare bedroom. :)
[identity profile] sgteam14283.livejournal.com on September 18th, 2012 01:22 am (UTC)
Oh no, do you work on weekends?

Well technically I don't (I have a complicated job), but at my work we do private parties and I'm one of the staffers so it's always a 50% chance I work during the weekend but if I know far enough in advance then I can ask for the weekend!

And that's fine, an empty house means that no one'll hear our fangirling shrieks! :P
(I have a TV in my room that I can bring if needed, it's not huge but it fits in my trunk, or I can borrow my sisters car)
[identity profile] icecream-junkie.livejournal.com on September 7th, 2012 07:24 am (UTC)
I'm not in the states, but I'll try my luck anyway. Is anyone interested in meeting up somewhere in Germany?
If so, I know a lovely place near Kassel that we could rent for a weekend to meet up. That specific place would need about 10 people though to be affordable.
Otherwise I'm willing to meet up mostly anywhere in Lower-Saxony, Hamburg or Bremen, as it would be easy for me to get there.
