So, we've had about 50 responses on the "Meet-Up Interest Poll" from a week or so ago!
The results are as follows:
In regards to getting together for a BIG event/group thing for either Captain America 2 or Avengers 2 we had:
35 YES!(s) and
15 I don't know, tell me more?(s)
In regards to small mini-cons, we had:
29 YES!(s)
20 I don't know, tell me more?(s) and
1 Not Interested
In terms of location, we had the most responses from the Northeast (17) and the Southeast (11), followed by the Northern Midwest (12), Southern Midwest (7), Pacific Northwest (7) and the Southwest (3). Other/International had a strong response at (11) - but those responses are spread all over the globe rather than in one specific country or even continent.
Since lots of people wanted more information, I'm including a more detailed explanation of the kind of thing I'm talking about below the cuts.
The idea for doing a big, movie-meet-up type con is kind of (very, very, very) loosely based around the idea of ScaperCon, only not so involved.
Essentially what I was thinking of is planning (well in advance) around the date of the premier of either Captain America: Winter Soldier (if Clint and Natasha are in it) - and/or the premier of Avengers 2. There wouldn't be formal registration or anything, but we could pick a specific hotel in a specific city so whoever wanted to or was able to come could spend the weekend together, all go see the movie together, and then flail, squee, (go see the movie again) and generally offer all kinds of fannish support to one another.
Things that might be involved:
-- the movie viewing (of course)
-- rewatching the previous movies together
-- seeing if the hotel had a conference room we could also rent for the weekend so we had a space larger than individual rooms to hang out in
-- watching various other Avengers/Renner/Scarlett things together
-- we're mostly going to babble at one another incessantly and occasionally go out into the world for things like food and to traumatize innocent by-standers with our fannish ways.
Things we would need to do:
-- pick locations/dates and etc. (preferably in plenty of time for people to save up, get plane tickets, schedule time off and so on)
-- set up some kind of secured posts/emails or something so people who wanted to talk about rooming together or carpooling (if they wanted to) could do so.
-- see about meeting space rentals (probably take some kind of donations up to cover it closer to time?)
-- get everyone the requisite information about hotels and whatnot so they can reserve rooms.
It's still really early days, but the sooner we start talking about it, the more likely we can pull it off.
Mini-Cons are a much more laid back version of the above (although what you do when you're there is remarkably similar.
For these, it's more likely to be a group of five to fifteen people, so finding meeting space isn't so much of an issue. These are also more likely to be regional than nationwide (or worldwide.)
You still pick a city and a specific hotel, and then you basically spend the weekend hanging out together doing fannish things.
These are a lot easier to plan, and can happen more frequently and with less lead time than the larger option.
For the Mini-Con options, we'd like to see if there are people in the various regions who might be interested in helping plan something for their area. I told
workerbee73 that I would be willing to work on planning for the Southeast, but I'm clueless about what kinds of locations and things would be good for other areas of the country.
If you have any questions, or would be interested in organizing for your region, please let us know!
