Beta Directory
EDIT: Please note that this is an old post that is now out of date. See instead our new Creative Support Directory!

If you have any questions on finding a beta, beta readers, beta reading, the relationship between writers and beta readers, and all that jazz we’ve been having a fantastic discussion HERE. One of the things that has come out of it is the idea of having a beta directory, to make finding a beta in this fandom easier and to help match writers and beta readers.

How this will hopefully work:

> Each beta will comment with a bunch of information that you can use to find someone/multiple someones that you think will work best for you. These betas are here because they like beta reading. They promise to help the best that they can. In return please do check the information they provide and play nice. This is intended to be a ‘no offence given, no offence taken’ zone :) If at any point either of you feel that it’s not working out then that’s okay and feel free to say so. Let’s keep this in the spirit of The Best Bar.

> This is a directory for beta readers in The Avengers Marvel Movie ‘Verse with a focus on Clint, Natasha, Clint and Natasha, and Clint/Natasha. Some of these beta readers may be willing to read Avengers stories with content from the Comics ‘Verse and/or without the focus being on these specific characters – please check each beta reader’s entry for this before contacting them.

> Please don’t reply to the comment with the beta’s information, that way they can edit their information as and when they need to. Instead please contact them according to their preferred method.

> If you have any questions, comments, ideas on how to improve this directory, etc. then please do share - there’s a thread at the start for that :) If you’d like to chat about beta reading in general please go to the creative support group post on betas.

Here’s an explanation of the information you can find on each beta for writers, and some hints for beta readers on how to comment (with a helpful form for betas to copy and paste into a comment at the end):

Username: Who you are!

Contact: Your preferred method of first contact. This might be Private Message (PM), email, twitter, anything.

Style: What kind of beta do you believe yourself to be? What should a writer expect from your approach?

Focus: What are your strengths as a beta? Are you fantastic at spelling, punctuation, and grammar? Are you brilliant at untangling plots, spotting inconsistent characterisation, or improving pace and flow? Can you Brit-pick or correct Americanisms? Are you great at cheerleading or real-time chats via instant messages? Etc.

Strictness: When it comes to your focus items, how strict are you? For example, do you expect to just tell your writer what you think is wrong and that’s that, or do you expect them to debate changes with you, or are your rules more like guidelines? (Levels of strictness that have been suggested: Natasha scowling at Stark > Natasha with a whip > Natasha as Natalie Rushman OR Loki’d Clint > Clint looking at you down the shaft of an arrow > Clint with a nerf gun.)

Speed: What kind of return/speed can a writer expect from you? Days, weeks, months? Does it depend?

Languages: Is English your first language? Are you able to beta read in other languages or perhaps just beta a section of a fic for writers using more than one language in a fic?

Technical Knowledge: Is there anything that you're really knowledgable in that might come in handy? For example, could you check the science and technology in a fic or contribute medical knowledge for people wanting their stories to be realistic? Are you brilliant at some eras of history? Know a lot about camping or a specific country? (This is a tricky one, because betas don't know what writers are specifically looking for, but maybe just a general note to point writers in the right direction.)

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: Things that you’re comfortable and not comfortable beta reading. What length and rating of fics are you willing to beta read for? Are there certain characters that you don’t feel confident checking the characterisation for? Would you want to beta read a story that was based in the comics or had comics content? Treat this as you would a ‘squees and squicks’ section on a gift exchange.

Flexibility: If the timing is appropriate for you, would you be able to be faster at beta reading or able to read a longer fic? Are your ‘squees and squicks’ set in stone or are you willing to beta for other things as long as the writer understands that they’re not your area of expertise? Would you beta read an Avengers fic that didn’t have a Clint, Natasha, Clint and Natasha, or Clint/Natasha focus?

Experience: Any beta or editorial experience that you might have. Maybe you proof read professionally, helped to edit a school/college newspaper, studied English, have beta read a lot before. Maybe you haven’t, that’s fine too :)

And some things that writers might want to tell beta readers when they first contact them:
- how long your fic is
- if your story is completed, a work in progress, intended to posted all at once or if you want a chapter beta read at a time
- if it’s for something, like an exchange, and when the deadline is
- the rating and warnings/triggers that your fic may have
- a brief summary
- what you’re stuck on, if there’s something specific
- if there’s a reason that you chose that particular beta, like a focus of theirs that you’d really like them to use on your fic

From a suggestion on the creative support group post Technical Knowledge has been added, although it's a tricky one and if a writer is looking for something really specific they may have more luck just posting to the comm in general.

Style: I'm flexible--I can stick to leaving comments in the document, get into long email threads, or IM. Whether you need a quick once-over for grammar, characterization comments on multiple drafts, or a sounding board for your ideas for a WIP, I'm up for it. I can be as gentle or as critical as you want if you give me an idea of what you're looking for, and I'm always happy to work with the same writer a second time.

Focus: Spelling and grammar, flow, characterization, dialogue.

Strictness: I'm pretty strict about basic grammar (though not as much in dialogue) but will usually only focus on punctuation if it creates problems with flow, clarity, or readability. With everything else, I leave suggestions--especially if you ask for them--but firmly believe it's ultimately the writer's call, and will usually make a note in my comments to that effect.

Speed: A day or two for shorter fics, two to three days for longer ones, and longer if I'm especially busy. If I expect to take longer than a day or two, I'll be sure to let you know.

Languages: American English is the only one I can guarantee, but I know some French and a tiny, tiny bit of Hebrew.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: My comics knowledge is limited, but I'm willing to beta stories that draw from them. I ship nearly every combination of Marvel movieverse characters and love them all, so I'm perfectly willing to beta things that don't have a Clint/Natasha focus. My squicks really depend on the fandom, and in this fandom I don't have too many, but if your fic contains non-con or any other common squicks I'd appreciate a warning.

Flexibility: As far as beta style goes, I'm very flexible, and if you let me know what you need, I can accommodate. As far as content is concerned, basically anything goes. If you think something in your fic might not be my cup of tea, let me know that when you contact me and we can discuss it.

Experience: I minored in creative writing and worked as a writing tutor in college. I've done a lot of betaing in other fandoms (Doctor Who, Glee, Harry Potter, Teen Wolf) and a little bit in Avengers fandom.

Contact: Email me at sneakyhufflepuff[at]gmail[dot]com. If you want a quick response PM me to let me know you emailed.

Style: I tend to go through fics line by line adding comments. I also add a short paragraph at the beginning and end with my overall impressions.

Focus: I focus on characterization and plot feedback. I will look at word usage, correct any egregious grammar errors and look for any missing words. I don't focus on the fine details of punctuation.

Strictness: I'm very blunt, but I don't expect you to agree with me. As harshness goes I'm definitely at Natasha scowling at Tony Stark. If you ask I can soften it up to Natasha holding a whip.

Speed: Depends on the week. If you ask and I accept I will usually have it back during three days (if it is less than 10,000 words).

Languages: English. I'm boring.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: You can ask me to beta anything (though let me know if it has graphic non-con or torture). If I don't feel like I can beta it I won't accept (e.g. I found that I wasn't that helpful of a beta to someone who shipped Sif/ Loki because I didn't care enough about Loki). If you want me to beta a fic longer than 10,000 words I'm going to need at least a week.

Flexibility: Tell me straight what type of betaing you want and I'll do my best to provide it. I'm definitely willing to read fics that aren't Clint/ Natasha or Avengers.

Experience: I've beta read fanfic off and on for a couple of years now, but most of my experience is in editing non-fiction writing (school newspaper articles and papers).

Style: I'll nit-pick and ask questions and suggest other ways to say things if I think they'll sound better, but at the same time, it's just advice and you're welcome to take or leave whatever you like of it, and that's entirely ok. Also, by doing that, I'm in no way saying that I think the story or writing isn't good or that I don't like it.

When it comes to discussing things (working out plot, characters, etc), I'll make suggestions but I'm not trying to write your story for you and you're welcome to take or leave any of those suggestions. If it helps? Great! If not? That's ok too! :D

Focus: The thing I'm best at is figuring out plot and character things. I'm good at seeing ways that different pieces fit, and what the results and ripples from a particular event or issue might be. I'm good at figuring out if someone is in character or not, or how that character might change depending on different circumstances. I love long, rambly emails about what's going to happen, or what a story might be about before we ever get to the literal beta-reading.

In re: grammar. I'm a big believer in using grammar to make language sound like you want it to, rather than being a slave to the rules.

Strictness: I think I'm some kind of cross between Clint with a nerf-gun and Tony getting to spend the day with another science-type. If I make suggestions, I think they're things that'll improve the story, but since it's not my story, I don't feel I'm in a position to say "you must change this, or else!" And I love having discussion about the stories I'm helping with. While you don't have to respond to any questions I might pose, I'm thrilled if you do. Have I mentioned how much I love talking about fic and characters? :D

Speed: A day or three, maybe up to a week, depending. I tend to have more time/space to do grammar/flow things on the weekend, but can usually do the plotting/character feels/"what about if *this* happened?" kind at any time during the week and will normally respond either the same or the following day. If it's urgent, you can email me and we'll see what I can work out.

Languages: American English, though I'm decent with Brit-picking thanks to years of writing Harry Potter fic. I might can help with some *really* basic japanese - and I can read hiragana and katakana if something just needs to be romanized (or un-romanized, as the case may be.) I like exploring and thinking about how/why my language works like it does, so if you aren't a native English speaker and I see an error in how a word or phrase is used, I'll do my best to not only suggest a correction, but also explain *why* what was written is incorrect and why the suggested rewrite is correct. Because English makes no kind of sense.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: I love dialogue (I'm pretty good at "hearing" character voices and figuring out how to tweak them.) Clint and Natasha are my very best babies, followed by Darcy. I love the whole team, though, and am willing to beta most 'ships.

I don't mind dark!fic (please see "WILL NOT"), dub-con and non-con. I don't have a problem reading sibling incest either, but please no Thor/Loki

I would prefer not to beta: Loki-centric, Loki/(anyone) -- unless it's in certain non-con sorts of situations (essentially, I'm just not that fond of the character and I don't think he's going to get better or become a semi-good guy if he gets enough attention and affection), Clint/Coulson, Coulson/Any of the Avengers (Coulson/Pepper is ok), anything that demonizes any of the Avengers (without a damn good reason), anything that is radically out of character (again, unless you give me a good reason how they got there) --- character death-fic isn't a favorite, but I'm willing to beta it on occasion if needs must.

I WILL NOT beta: anything with child sexual abuse (vague mentions that it happened in the past isn't a problem), parent/child incest, anything that falls into the category of "torture porn" (ie, like the Saw series)

Flexibility: pretty flexible

Experience: I've been reading and writing fic for over 15 years in various fandoms

Contact: PM on LJ, or I have Twitter (https://twitter.com/book_Junkie007), which I'm on fairly constantly.

Style: I tend to write all my general beta notes in the body of an email, leaving just my grammar changes in the fic's document. I'm always willing to look at something a second, third, fourth time for you, just to make sure it the best it can be. Also, if you tell me what you're looking for specifically, I'll make sure to follow your requests.

Focus: Spelling and grammar, whether things flow and make sense, clearing up confusing points. I'm basically pretty good at overall things, because if you think you have a good handle on the characters, I won't fight you on it.

Strictness: I'm not that strict; my suggestions are more like guidelines, and if you have a question about why I have a problem with something, I make sure to give you reasons as to why I feel that way.

Speed: I can do anything from extremely short notice (OMG, this fic is due the next day, HELP!) to a week or two after you send it to me. I have more time now (I only have a national certification exam to study for right now), so if you PM me, I can get back to you fairly quickly.

Languages: I have Canadian English, which means it's a weird blend of American and British English, and I watch a lot of British TV, which means I can help with either of those two dialects. I also knew French, way back in the day, but I don't think you would want me conjugating your verbs with any skill at this moment.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: I will beta pretty much anything, except for extremely graphic sex, some of the more extreme sex kinks, and other common squicks such as dub-con/non-con. Whether I'm comfortable with slash or femme slash depends on how graphic it is. I will let you know up front if I feel comfortable betaing your fic or not if you give me a synopsis first. Generally anything goes, though, including mpreg.

I don't know a lot about the comics, and my knowledge of the films is woefully lacking, but if you need someone to read over your story without knowing the background, I can do that. As I said before, I'm an overall quality of fic kind of girl. This is particularly helpful when you're asked as a last minute beta for a fic about a threesome in a fandom you don't even know. :P

Flexibility: I'm very flexible with what I beta. Just give me a basic overview/fandom/pairing, and I'll be able to help you with the major things.

Experience: I've taken a couple first year university English courses as well as two years of high school English where my teacher was a grammar Nazi. I've beta'd for various fandoms including Bones, Torchwood, Life on Mars, Sherlock, etc.

Style: I tend to leave an overall note in an email and comment in the document. I can do chat, I'll go through multiple drafts if you want me to and I as most others am always happy to work with the same author more than once.

Focus: Grammar and spelling, story flow, characterization.

Strictness: I guess it depends, I am like Natasha with a whip when it concerns basic grammar rules and I can't abide the misuse of homonyms. But other than that, I am more Clint with a Nerf gun. I'll try to be whatever you need, I can be a sounding board, I'll give my opinion freely but always in a corteous manner. And any suggestions besides grammar and spelling are just that, suggestions.

Speed: I would say usually 1-2 days for shorter chapters (up to 2500 words), more than that I'd probably need a couple days more to do a thorough job.

Languages: English is my second language, German is my first. But I lived in the US for a year and went to High School there, so I am fairly confident when it comes to American English. I also lived and worked in Ireland for two years, so I am good with British English as well. I am in charge of English <> German translations at my company, so I'd say I am fairly proficient in both languages. I also speak a little bit of Slovene, but as hardly anybody else does, I don't think that would be of interest *lol*

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: Bring it on! I was a big fan of the comics when I was a kid, so comic verse is fine with me. I think I have a good handle on most of the characters (not too sure about Sif, though) and I'll read almost anything. I am not a big fan of torture for torture's sake, but if it is necessary for the fic I don't mind.
I don't want to read (and I am shamelessly stealing this from cybermathwitch) anything with child sexual abuse (vague mentions that it happened in the past isn't a problem), parent/child incest, anything that falls into the category of "torture porn" (ie, like the Saw series). I also don't want to do Omega verse or mpreg.

Flexibility: Just call me Mrs. Fantastic, I am a flexible as Reed Richards *lol* I can do a fast read through just for grammar and spelling with some short annotations regarding readability in a day, if you are pressed for time. I'll read any length of fic, 100 or 100,000 words :)

Experience: I proof read professionally, mainly newspaper articles for our company's internal and external newsletters. But as I am in charge of translations, I have to proof read a lot of English as well. I have been proofreading since High School, mainly non-fiction newspaper articles and college law papers for a dyslexic friend *fun times, lol*. I majored in English in school and have betaed fanfic in the Avengers fandom before.

Style: I usually want to originally leave remarks in the document and corrections and so on. If you like, we can discuss things via e or im. Once overs or indepth, multiple back and forths. If you want a sounding board or just a bit of cheerleading, I can do that, too. But you have to tell me you need that.
Focus: I'm best at standard grammar and spelling, story flow and dialogue.
Strictness: Call me in between Nat as Natalie Rushman and Nat with a whip on basic grammar and spelling. I think dialogue should be natural and reflect the character, so that has to be taken into account. For style and writer's tics...I'm a big believer that those things are up to the writer, but I am happy to offer suggestions.
Speed: Small fics under 2000 words I can turn around in a day, usually. Anything longer will take up to three days. If I expect to be longer, I will let you know immediately. If you need a smaller fic done quickly, I'm pretty flexible. However, if you have a 30,000 word story for a deadline tomorrow, I am not your beta.
Languages: American English, though I have extensive experience with Brit-pick and I can do a bit of basic traveler's French and Spanish.
Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: I prefer not to read or edit body functions or slut-shaming, parent/child incest and mpreg, although I will make exceptions on the last for a 'Loki' scenario. I don't have many squicks, but I do ask for a heads up especially for extreme torture, non-con, BDSM, or on-going violent child abuse. However, I am not an expert in heavy BDSM rules and safety, so while I can edit it for content as to whether it reads well, I cannot provide a safe how to guide. I'm pretty comfortable with Clint, Natasha and Avengers in general, either just movie-verse or with comic influence. I'm happy to beta WIP and crack the whip on you if a chapter is late in coming.
Flexibility: Tell me what you need and I can probably provide it.
Experience: I have a minor in English Lit, I've done beta work in multiple fandoms for over ten years and I've done professional proof. I do have a fair amount of experience with writers who are fluent ESL, so I can usually help with "How do I say this in English, you all don't have the word that I need."

Style: I'm flexible. I can do just a grammar, nitpick (making sure the characters don't have blue eyes in one chapter and brown the next), and general readability beta. Or I can be more of a sounding board to go over things with and discuss plot points. Either way, I do like to leave line by line comments in a Word document and then overall comments about the entire fic either at the end or in a separate email.

Focus: Spelling, grammar, dialogue and overall flow of the story. I can also Brit and Ameri-pick stories. Another key focus is spotting inconsistencies.

Strictness: I'm around Natasha with a whip. I'm strict on spelling and homonyms. Punctuation is a lot looser-as long as the story is flowing smoothly, I am a lot more lax. Very lax with dialogue, again as long as it flows smoothly. I do like to see variety and not as much he said/she said. I do leave lots of notes and suggestions and don't make actual changes (apart from spelling)-I leave that up to the writer. I also explain why I think the changes should be made.

Speed: Barring anything unexpected, a day or two for short fics or a decent sized chapter. A couple of days for a longer fic. If there is an issue, I would let the author know.

Languages: American English is my primary language. I can probably help with phrases in French and Spanish. As noted above, i can Brit-pick. I've beta'd for a couple of Doctor Who fics and am a life long Anglophile.

Technical Knowledge: Some knowledge of modern guns, have access to an expert. Also knowledge of modern warfare and tactics and access to expert on that as well.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: Willing to beta almost anything except for fics that are non-con. That is my only hard limit.

Anything else is a go. Any characters, any pairing-although my ability to be critical of characterization won't be as good as it is for Clint and Natasha. I am also willing to beta for Comic verse stories even though I don't have any knowledge of them -those would be more of a grammar/spelling/general flow beta.

Flexibility: Except for the above mentioned hard limit of non-con, I am as flexible as Gumby. I enjoy reading many different styles and have beta'd in different styles for several different authors.

Experience: I've beta'd for several authors in different fandoms for the past nine years. I've also beta'd for two different self-published authors on Smashwords. (both of those were just a final spelling, grammar, punctuation, nitpick beta. They were authors I had beta'd for previously in fanfic. no, not the author of Shade of Grey. lol)

Contact: a PM goes right to my email so I should see it quick

Style: I put comments in the document and am always willing to discuss the story by email.

Focus: I'm that comma girl you keep hearing about! *grins* Punctuation is the foundation of the story! It's important! I really like to think that my focus is mainly on readability. If I have to stop and think about what it going on, I'm going to bring that up. A writer never wants a reader to stop reading! The only time I will try to untangle plots or spot uncharacteristic characters is if those problems stop the readability. I often ask questions if I feel I'm missing something.

Strictness: I give you my thoughts. You decide what you want your finished product to be. I'm like eyebrow-quirked-up Natasha. If you ask me to beta for you, I assume that you enjoy writing and want to put out a good product. I don't critique plot but I will do my best to make sure that the words and sentences that you have written are top-notch.

Speed: Please give me a date you'd like it back. Make something up if you have to! I try to get back to you quickly but it depends on what else is going on in RL and with my own writing. If I have a definitive date, I'm better at getting you on to my mental calendar.

Languages: I only know English.

Technical Knowledge: I'm a Pharmacy Tech so if you want to know anything about medications, I can try to help you out. The Pharmacists that I work with think it's HILARIOUS when I ask them questions about meds in fanfic!

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: While I don't have many actual squicks, I'm probably not the person you want to come to for advice on your NC-17 fic. That doesn't mean that I'm not willing to beta it for good sentence structure. It just means that I'm not going to be able to tell you if it's any good or give you any feedback of a personal nature.

Give me everyone but Loki. I don't understand him and I don't like him much. I'm starting to untangle the comic 'verse but may have to ask questions to help me understand any characters you use outside the movie 'verse.

Flexibility: I feel I am super flexible, especially if we're able to open up a dialogue about what it is that you need. I am willing to beta outside of Avengers if you need help.

Experience: I was on the my school journalism staff from 8th grade until 12th grade. I did well enough on the language part of Standardized Tests that I was able to opt out of Freshman English in college. I'm a voracious reader (because every good writer is a reader). I've been actively writing, both fanfic and original stories, since 2003. I've been offering my services as a beta for the last five years.

Contact: First contact by PM please. All things go to my email :)

Style: Thorough. I comment all over the place and then write some overarching notes at the end. It ends up looking like one of my huge meta comments that I post in replies to fic, only more, and perhaps with more constructive criticism. Prone to asking ‘yes, but what do you mean by that?’ and suggesting meanings. I welcome being sent more than one draft.

Focus: Readability. I kind of attack everything as I see it – grammar, spelling, punctuation, characterization, plot arcs, anything. My aim is to help writers make it so that their readers read the story as the writer intend it to be read, so they get the meanings that the writer means, the style the writer was going for etc.

Strictness: At the end of the day it’s the writer’s story and not mine, so if you don’t do anything with my suggestions I don’t mind. I reserve the right to say I’m correct on some points though, even if I’m disagreed with ;) I do like debating things with writers, because I think it’s fun to see people’s reasons for certain decisions and how other decisions might change the story.

Speed: Give me a week. If it’s a short story, or I have a lot of free time, then you’ll probably get it back a lot faster. If it’s a long one, it might take me some time. If you want it back sooner then you won’t get thorough; you’ll get whatever you specifically ask me to look at.

Languages: English (UK, so I can Brit-pick). A little rusty French and a touch of British Sign Language.

Technical Knowledge: I’m a British Geographer, so I’m good for knowledge on Britain and British culture, and a bundle of other places. Other things I can think of off the top of my head: camping/caravanning, (British) banking, orchestras/instruments (string instruments particularly), fiction (if you have book references going on), university life, disabilities, and magic as in magicians (performing, how tricks work, making tricks).

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: Clint and Natasha are the characters that I’m most comfortable with, but I’m willing to beta read for the Avengers Movie ‘verse in general and I have some familiarity with the comics. I can beta sex scenes, but they’re not my strong point. I love playing with dialogue. I’m okay with dark fic, as long as it’s not gratuitous. I will beta AUs and crossovers, but if it involves another fandom that I’m not familiar with then I do think that limits what I can do.

Flexibility: Really, I’ll read anything as long as you can make me believe in it. Your best bet is to send me a summary or an idea of what you’re doing, and then I can let you know how I match up.

Experience: I have an English Language A Level, did a lot of writing at university, and have taken part in a few creative writing groups. I’ve only been offering as a beta reader in a few fandoms for the past two years or so, but I’ve been writing online since the early 2000s.

I prefer highlighting words or paragraphs and then adding a note. Usually I'll highlight the straight-out typos with red and everything else in green (grammar suggestions, plot flow etc) but it's not a must and I can work with whatever format you are comfortable with.
Focus:
Spelling and grammar are definitely important, as that's what keeps me most from enjoying a story. I also tend to look at the flow of a story and whether it has enough/too much detail and/or internal dialogue.
Strictness:
I tend to be more on the strict side, but I can easily tone it down, depending on what you're looking for. If you want a full-on story support, I'll be strict and tell you everything I believe should be highlighted. If you just want grammar/spelling or just a general impression of the story, I'll just stick to that. Tell me what you need!
Speed:
0-5000 Words, 1 day after I accept
5000-10.000, 2 days etc, though I will probably not accept very long fics atm. If they are multi-chaptered and I can work through them chap by chap, that's fine though.
Languages:
English (though more UK than US, though I am not lost in US lingo)
German (I'm from Germany, so whatever you need xD Even if it's just background knowledge about what a supermarket looks like ;))
Technical Knowledge:
Uhm ... well, I've had english in school for 10 years, and in Germany they tend to hammer grammar into your brain and not much else, so I am pretty sure my grammar is sound.
I've recently finished a B.Sc. at an english University (and have lived in the UK several years now) and I was usually the one correcting everyone elses work.
I've been in various fandoms (mainly DW and HP ff-wise) for about 10 years.
That's as technical as it gets with me.
Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta:
I am willing to beta pretty much everything, as long as Clint and/or Tash are the main focus for now. I don't mind smut (actually, I have pretty vocal opinions about it), kinky stuff is fine as well. Battle, blood, gore, throw it my way - as long as it is reasonable and has a place in the story. Random mass-rapings for the heck of it are not my cup of tea, if you know what I mean.
Flexibility:
Usually, very. Atm a little less, but I'm sure we can work something out. Just talk to me, I'm open and usually don't bite (unless you want me to)
Experience:
Like I said, 10+ years of fandom shenanigans, mainly as a writer/celebrator, but I've done my share of beta reading :)

Contact: via PM; happy to exchange e-mail addresses for doc transmission

Style: I like to think of myself as a team player, whose interest is in helping create a product that will make the author happy. Writing fan fiction should always be about fun and creativity, not stress. I like working in MS Word, with track changes/comment features.

Focus: I have a pretty sharp eye for grammar, syntax and spelling. I also note inconsistencies in character voices, missing transitions, errors in continuity or lack of logic in the narrative, and when something just plain doesn't work or make sense. I try very hard not to impose my own style on writers in my suggestions and always provide comments when I suggest a substantive change.

Strictness: Probably somewhere between Clint with a nerf gun and Coulson with a post-it note and a polite throat clearing.

Speed:Days, not weeks, and have turned things around on a dime on occasion. I travel a lot and can do quite a bit on air planes, but sometimes those trips may have a negative impact on availability as well. But I will always endeavour to give you an estimate!

Languages:English (Canadian -- a healthy blend between British and American); German

Technical Knowledge:I am burdened with a fair bit of knowledge about CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) weapons; armed conflict and insurgencies/war crimes/crimes against humanity; transnational organized crime; human rights; and terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Familiar with most international organizations and NGOs and the inner workings of Government and international policy-making processes. I have travelled extensively, including in the former Soviet Union (particularly the Caucasus and the 'Stans), pretty much all of Europe except the Balkans and Baltics (give it time ...), India, China, Afghanistan, bits of Africa and the Middle East.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta:No torture or graphic and sexual violence. Reference to past events is ok, but descriptions are a red line for me. (Been too close to the real thing in my line of work to want to deal with it in my down time.) Prefer believable, character-consistent relationships; no explicit slash or the infamous "mpreg" please.

Flexibility: I will always be conscious that the writing process is about the writer's, not the beta's, ideas. Always happy to discuss suggested changes, and will never insist on having my way. My goal is to advise, not dictate.

Experience: BA (Honours) and MA in English; LLB and LLM in law (focus on international). Several years as a freelance, part-time editor of legal and business publications. Have beta'd in both the Avengers and Star Trek fandoms.

Contact: either on LJ or vixen_woo[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk

Style: I tend to send back three seperate files - the original that was sent to me; the original with my suggestions in square brackets if I feel something should be changed; and a version that I have changed things and used all my suggestions to let you see what it would look like if you used them all.

Focus: I am esspecially good with grammar and punctuation. I can also help out with characterisation and plots too if it's needed. :)

Strictness: I am quite strict with grammar etc but at the same time I understand that anything I say is only a suggestion and the final say is that of the author.

Speed: This depends on how long the fic is and what is going on at the time. If you get in contact and tell me how long the fic is etc, I should be able to give you an estimate of the time it will take.

Languages: Unfortunately only English!

Technical Knowledge: I have a BSc in Biomedical science if that is useful for any reason. Other than that I don't really have any technical knowledge. I am willing to help out with any research that may need done.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: I am willing to beta anything really. I have no preference in pairing or character.

Flexibility: I am extremely flexible at the moment. Willing to at least attempt everything at least once.

Experience: I have beta'd many fics for Stargate SG-1, Merlin, Firefly and some Original. I have not, however, beta'd anything for the Avengers before; though I am always willing to learn!

Contact: PM will be fine, it goes straight to my email :)

Style: Whatever you prefer. I can either enter annotations and/or track changes directly to the text, or send you a couple of paragraphs with general thoughts and comments, or whatever else works for you.

Focus: Characterization, syntax and general flow of the text, as well as side-details. English is not my native language, which is both good news and bad news. Good news: inadvertent errors like "its you're job" strike me immediately, because grammar rules were drilled into me in a classroom. Bad news: prepositions are my weak spot.

Strictness: Again, whatever you prefer. I'm always polite because I can't imagine doing this otherwise.

Speed: Weekends are generally easier. I can do approx 2,500 words per day on weekdays too, as long as I know it from before and can schedule.

Languages: English, German, Greek. I live in Greece, in case you need any contextual info for a story set here.

Technical Knowledge: Linguistics, literature, history, philosophy. I've studied in Germany and traveled through Central Europe. Apart from my main languages, I also speak passable Spanish and horrific French, and can read Latin and Ancient Greek (because that's how the educational system in my country punishes the Humanities majors in high school). I work as a translator and I have extensive experience as a reviewer, which means that I can dissect a text in as much depth as you'd like me to.

Willing to beta/Not Willing to beta: No rape/non-con, slash, ABO and m-preg, please. Apart from these, anything goes. I don't mind kink. :)

Flexibility: I prefer Clint/Natasha stories, but would have no problem with anything else.

Experience: Not in beta, no. :)
