zomg.
I saw this and I had to share. Let me bore you with statistics for a minute:

as of May 6, 2012 (the day this little bar was founded) we had:
4 members
4 watching

as of today (1/1/13), we have
1,000 members
1,051 watching

PLEASE EXCUSE ME WHILE I BREATHE INTO THIS PAPER BAG. HOW ARE Y'ALL SO AWESOME???

(Alas, I'm not sure who our thousandth member is, but I wish there was a way to find out so we could throw them a party or something-- or at least make a commemorative icon. :D)

This is the very best bar. I am just floored. Happy new year, y'all. <3

So I am little bit sad, but somehow I kept thinking about this. About all these amazing people here, sharing and actively enjoying each other and the characters they love.

You say you're shocked that there are so many members but ... come to think of it ... I am not, really. I've been around LJ since ... late 2004? Early 2005? Needless to say, I've lived through my fair share of ups and downs on this blog. I've waded through a lot of fan wars and other shenanigans here and I also saw LJ die, slowly. First, when DW was introduced, than more so when Tumblr joined the online world. And I was sad about it, really sad.

But there are still places on LJ that are alive and this one is, from the ones that I know, by far the best one. Why? Because the mods are committed. It really IS that simple. You have all things friday and unfinished fic wednesday and promptathons and challenges and secret santas and you CARE! You're here, amongst us "normal" folk, dancing away and squeeing and sharing and simply enjoying and OBVIOUSLY that is a feeling that you get the moment you step into this community. I definitely got it the moment I hit "send" on my introduction post. And it made me SO SO SO SOO HAPPY!

You made this community MORE than just a place where people like to see the same characters hook up. And that is what keeps us here, what makes us so committed that NONE of us dropped out of a fanfic challenge during the busiest time of the year, you remember to post merry christmas posts and new years shout outs.

We always say this is the best bar (and it's SO TRUE) but ... come on, we might get drunk and silly here, but this is a lot more than the most inviting, most comfortable living room I've ever been to, where everyone just huddles together, with big cushions and endless cups of tea.

And YOU guys, you mods and members of the first order, you MADE it into this place.

And I, for one, am bloody grateful that you did!

I will now stop this embarrassing love letter and crawl back into my little RPG world where I am currently playing demon-hunter-Clint that has just discovered that Tasha, the women he has adored since he is five years old, is a Demon ... YOLO! :P

I want to hug this and squeeze it and adopt it and keep it for always <3

I have to say though, my biggest smile came when you listed all things friday and unfinished fic wednesday and promptathons and challenges and secret santas as mod things because all things friday started as that, but the comm took it and ran with it and now lots of people volunteer to host it and host it brilliantly. The promptathon was supported by so many people, who then did crazy things like list everything and mark what was unfished, and who did incredible fills. Challenges are issued by everyone. The Secret Santa and unfinished fic wednesday was the result of others coming to us and saying, 'can we do this here?' and then organising the whole shindig.

That's the thing. 'Can we do this here?' Bee stocked the bar, the other three of us got up on the dance floor, we all love everyone who walks in through the door, but it's all of you that make this place. So long as you all keep wanting to be here, here we are.

PS. QC has made YOLO = You Obviously Love Owls to me and now I have demon-hunter Clint, demon Tasha, and a demon owl in my head. Just sayin' ;)

But isn't that just it?! That this is a place were people feel comfortable doing all of this?! I've been in so many comms and I always felt like ... "uhm, am I allowed to post this? Can I talk to you? Am I even allowed to open my mouth?!" and half the time the mods are weirdos on power trips and their voice is angel music etc.

And the way this place was evidently from the beginning has grown into what it is now and ... well ... should stop with the gushing xD

*cough* Clint gets himself transformed into a Hawk to fight the demon owl, because nothing else is cutting it and because of magical reasons. It is possible that he is helped by Doctor Strange or someone to do this. It is possible that Tony is pissed because science is far superior to magic. It is possible that Natasha is pissed because CLINT IS A BIRD, WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING? WERE YOU THINKING?! and/or because they don't know if they can change him back.

Maybe.

*cough*

Sorry. Forgot the E. Ladyhawke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladyhawke) - one of the best movies of the 80s!

I AM SO OLD! I saw that movie in the theater with my friends! Granted, we were in middle school so it wasn't like I was in college or anything but... *sigh*

Okay, enough about how I might as well go buy a walker. But you must see this movie! You must! Is it on Netflix? I think so. I don't know if it's anywhere else but I know it still comes on TV from time to time so it's not like it's completely disappeared.

I need to own the DVD. Hmm...

Besides, Matthew Broderick gets to be FUNNY and he's adorable in this movie.

I just saw your conversation and had to jump in, sorry :)

And all the yes to this idea, the film is lovely, right there with The Princess Bride! I bought it in a GameStop in Ireland a couple of years ago and I still like to watch it, although I find the soundtrack pretty distracting now, it's just really bad 80s synthesizer pop ;)

But to have Clint and Natasha separated like that... *wibbles*

Yes! The music is so horrid! But that scene! The one where they ALMOST get to touch and then she flies away! ALL THE PHEELS! My thirteen year old self just melts even just thinking about it.

Which means I should find a way to MAKE THAT HAPPEN!

:D
[identity profile] shenshen77.livejournal.com on January 4th, 2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
Yes, oh my god, yes! That scene, still breaking my heart after all these years. All the longing and the hopelesness and quiet devotion... *gross sobbing*

I first saw that movie at a friend's birthday party, I think she turned 11 or 12, and I still get those little girl 'oh my god, this is what love is' feels when I think about that movie too!

Please make it happen! I gladly offer me as a sounding board ;)

And the bar becomes what it needs to be. It is... it is very much a sentient being. We need a promptathon and a promptathon we shall have! It's time for Secret Santa and POOF! There it is.

That's why I'm pacing the length of the dance floor, mumbling something about a million dollars.

(And by sentient, I of course mean that everyone is awesome about supporting everything that goes on and keeping it going by their enthusiasm and planning things that are awesome.)

((But I'm not going to stop wishing for a million dollars.))

awesome circle of love is awesome.

I completely second this entire post. I've noticed a lot of the same things about lj and can say a lot of the other communities feel like there is a popular crowd that sometimes lowers themselves to hang out with the commoners. This is definitely a much more open, fun, lively place to be. I love your analogy of a living room. That is what it feels like.
[identity profile] purely-distel.livejournal.com on January 2nd, 2013 12:13 pm (UTC)
*high fives* pretty much exactly what I tried to say. I just need longer to get a point across xD

i'm with inkvoices. i jsut want to hug this comment and never let go.

and srsly, it's the member who continually inspire us to do more and to do it better. we want this place to be as good as it can be simply because we have the most amazing members on the planet.

i've been around LJ for a while too (as lurker even wayy before that), and i know what you mean. i was too lazy to move to DW, and while i love tumblr, there's just no place that facilitates discussion (and i would argue a sense of community) like LJ. so here we are. it's been such a great ride.
