ATTF: Avengers and team interaction
Heyy! I'm your host today for this Friday's round of All The Things! So, today we're going for ALL THE AVENGERS.

So obviously, we all love Clint and Natasha being badass and competent together; swanning all over the world and being awesome. But they are, of course, part of a larger organisation (SHIELD) and part of the Avengers to boot. So, how do they get on with all these different people? Do Clint and Tony enjoy annoying the hell out of everyone? Does Natasha find every second sentence out of Darcy’s mouth vaguely baffling? Let us know!

So! Today I want one of two things from you lovely people:

> Thoughts and headcanons on who Clint and Natasha would/n't get on with (Avengers and SHIELD) and why, and...
> Recs of stories showcasing the best of Clint and Natasha’s relationship with others (SHIELD or Avengers)!

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

Clint:

OK so the first one here is Coulson. But then again, I’m not sure how much of this is just fan-influenced. (I mean how did it come to be decided that Clint was picked up by Coulson? Because that's a fanon staple now, much like Clint having been in the army.) So, other than Coulson, I see Clint getting on with Tony, after about two or three months of the two of them sniping at each other and hating each other and generally driving everyone else up the wall. In fact, those are mostly the reasons behind that. And this is a personal thing to me but I sort of think that Clint and Thor would get on like a house on fire – something to do with being a little loud and inappropriate and pissing around, but also being good and having shitty brothers and a hundred other little things. Just, there should be more fics of the two of them. ALSO I see him getting on with Betty. FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN I WANT BETTY IN ALL STORIES EVER. Also because Betty protected Bruce when no one else would, AND stood up to the Hulk. I reckon EVERYONE can respect that.

As to people he doesn't get on with... for some reason I see Jane baffling him, nothing mean just... I dunno why but I just do. And I go through phases of thinking he'd get on with Maria really well, and then thinking he'd not get on with her at all. And sometimes I think the same about Steve (and anyone with a position of authority over him) because I think he has authority issues. And in general I think it would take him a while to let others in because hello abandonment issues and (obviously) trust and loyalty issues after Loki (maybe just in his head, but there nonetheless).

Natasha:

Haha oh God. Sometimes I get so muddled about what I think about Natasha. Like, I absolutely love stories about her and Pepper being BBFs and terrifyingly competent and awesome. But then sometimes I also think, other than having vaguely self-destructive men in their lives (and of course, being terrifyingly competent) what else do they have in common? *shrugs* I do think, though, that once she gets over the whole Hulk thing, Bruce and Natasha would get on pretty well. I see them having a similar sense of humour from some reason. And then Steve, because everyone gets on with Steve. And if you don’t get on with Steve, Steve sure as hell gets on with you. Unless you’re Tony. Sometimes. :P And of course Maria, in a terrifyingly competent way. And they can talk shop and not have to worry about clearance levels and freaking the other out and they both know when to drop the subject.

As to people she doesn’t get on with so well… I see Tony frustrating her no end. And I see her finding some people difficult because they’re so normal sometimes, and she finds that a little difficult to… comprehend? Something. So like… Jane and Darcy.

But I’m not sure really. If I had a specific Clint or Natasha to drop into a narrative somewhere, then I’d know exactly who they’d get on with (or not) in that situation. But this is sort of… plucking relationships out of a fuzzy half-formed idea of Clint and Natasha made up of every Clint and Natasha I’ve ever read a story about. But that’s not really useful. So. Hopefully you all have some better formed headcanons than me! :P

And some Recs of Fabulousness (in my opinion)
(And if no one's noticed, I'm totally doing this because I NEED MORE TEAM FIC IN MY LIFE PEOPLE)

Aggie2011's Vantage Point Universe
[ ff.net | Clint/Natasha, Pepper/Tony | R | A LOT OF WORDS | 17 stories so far | warnings: sex and violence, basically; see each story for specific warnings ]
A universe revolving around Hawkeye/Clint Barton, from his circus origins, through the army, his year as a contract assassin, being picked up and working for SHIELD and eventually his time with the Avengers.

This is the universe I base a great deal of my Clint and Coulson interaction off (basically all the stories), and my Clint and Tony interaction (Trust). I also like Clint’s interactions with Bruce and Steve (Arrow Man) and with the whole team later on (Vantage Point onwards). No disrespect to the author, but I find her platonic relationships more believable than her romantic ones. However, if you like Clint and you like mission fics, here’s a good way of spending a whole bunch of hours. :D

Skies Over Manhattan by [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer
[ AO3 | Clint/Natasha, Pepper/Tony, Thor/Jane | 32,000 | warnings: the aftermath of mind control ]
Two master assassins, a demi-god, a super soldier, a man with breath-taking anger management issues and a billionaire in a flying suit. They're supposed to be on the same team.

OK this is the story of fabulousness that I use for the bench mark of everyone’s interactions with everyone else. Ever. Because [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer, the wonderful person she is, somehow wrote everyone exactly how I wanted them. Kudos to you!

Also because of this: She has learned over the years that Clint never gets drunk – too many shitty memories associated with that concept. But when he’s relaxed, his inner juvenile delinquent comes out and he likes to fuck with people’s serenity, just to see what they do. Can I have 100 stories about exactly this please?

Fine by Sinkme
[ ff.net | gen | 570 | warnings: none ]
With six messed up superheroes living together, there's no way they all adjusted well.

Just… lovely. *pets all the messed up superheroes*

Recovery by Sinkme
[ ff.net | gen | PG-13 | 2,100 | warnings: none ]
Surprisingly, it was Maria Hill who pushed Clint firmly on the path to recovery.

I just love the concept, and I love this Maria and this Clint and this story. OK?

10 Things Pepper Knows About Natasha (And One Thing Natasha Knows About Pepper) by okayophelia
[ tumblr | gen | PG-13 | 1,200 | warnings: none ]
Pepper realizes this when, instead of meeting up for a dry martini in a high-class establishment, as is Pepper’s natural preference, or drinking straight vodka in an illegal Russian gambling hole, like Natasha wants to, they compromise and drink straight vodka in an illegal Russian gambling hole.

Everything about this is glorious.

Give A Girl A Moment And She'll Take You For All You've Got by tielan
[ AO3 | gen | R | 7,200 | warnings: violence ]
Coulson had once made the observation that Darcy Lewis’ ability to beg, bribe, or bully people into her plans was almost a superpower in and of itself. Considering she was walking down a tattered Tribeca street with four women she either barely knew or didn’t socialise with for drinks on a Friday night, Maria could well believe it.

ALL THE GIRLS (minus Betty, sad times) KICKING BUTT AND TAKING NAMES. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?

Comfort and Joy by [livejournal.com profile] always_a_queen
[ LJ | Clint/Natasha, Thor/Jane, Pepper/Tony | PG-13 | 5,100 | warnings:
The Avengers celebrate Christmas and everyone gives Natasha unwarranted advice about her love life.

Each person’s differing advice to Natasha, and how they give that advice, is fantastic.

The Sky and Everything Beneath It by jibrailis
[ AO3 | gen | PG-13 | 7,100 | warnings: angst ]
Steve goes on a road trip to clear his head, but the other Avengers won't leave him alone.

OK so this is mostly about Steve to be honest. But then everyone else turns up and it’s just… lovely. And the last couple of lines still make me cry.

Fifteen Short Stories About Teamwork by BlackEyedGirl
[ AO3 | gen | PG-13 | 6,000 | warnings: violence ]
They’ve made a start. There’s still a lot to learn about each other.

Aah just… Natasha and everyone and Clint and everyone and everyone and everyone. I suck at this reccing business, don’t I? Huh.

As an aside, does anyone know of an Avengers genfic comm? Pretty please?

I'm not a big fan of team fic where they all move into Stark Tower unless it's crack fic. I don't see why a group of adults who hardly know each other would be willing to do that.

Yes, yes, YES. My theory is that the idea that dormstyle living is attractive can come only from people for whom it is a first escape from parents, not from sentient adults who like a spot of privacy now and then.

As for Natasha and Maria -- hmmm... Maria has a supercilious side to her (the way she reacts to Fury's orders about Phase 2; the fact that she rats Clint's possession out to the Council "was that not protocol???" in the deleted scene) that I don't think Natasha would find attractive. My head canon certainly has Clint reacting very badly to the "so the carnie is thinking now??" side I see her having.

I can see why Bruce might use the tower as a base since he didn't live in New York, but surely Clint, Nat and Steve would already have apartments in the city? Even if they were destroyed when aliens attacked, I can't see any of them being willing to move in with Tony Stark of all people.

My headcanon for Maria is that she's a stickler for protocol because she genuinely hates corruption, and Natasha respects that even if she doesn't agree with her. I think Natasha likes that you always know where you stand with Maria, she prefers that approach to Coulson's "I'm everyone's best friend now go kill people," which reminds her a little too much of the manipulation she received as a child.

My head canon certainly has Clint reacting very badly to the "so the carnie is thinking now??" side I see her having.

I don't see that about Maria. I don't think she and Clint are close, but she respects him.

(side note, because this brings out my inner Maria fan: I get really pissed when people write Coulson outranking Maria)

YES on problems with Coulson outranking Maria -- she is the Deputy Director, not an EA as some make her out to be. I haven't read a lot of the comics, but even wikipedia says that much ...

(Oh, that reminds me, pet peeve: People who spell SHIELD "SHEILD". Ugh.)

Yes, I see that I made the Maria sees Clint as a carnie point too strongly -- my head canon has her react that way at first (as she does to all of Fury's unorthodox ideas), and come around slowly (as she does when she sees things work, like the Avengers). In "In the Service" (and echoed in others of my pre-movie stories) I have them start out essentially deeply unimpressed with each other, and gradually working towards mutual respect.

I feel very protective of Maria Hill because the fandom hate for her is vile and not too subtle in its sexism, and I'm tired of seeing her reduced to a one dimensional antagonist in fic because she (gasp!) doesn't immediately fall down and worship the fandom darlings Steve and especially Tony. *eyeroll*

(there's one fic that keeps cropping up in the Clint/Nat tag on AO3 where Natasha and Maria are characterised pretty badly, and reading all the comments calling them bitches and wanting them to suffer makes me lose faith in humanity)

Maria! I see Maria and Clint respecting each other, and maybe even becoming friends, but it took a while. I hope we see at least glimpses of her in Phase 2 and S.H.I.E.L.D. so we learn more about the movieverse version of her.

Hi, I just found this thread and have a comment about the team moving into Stark Tower.

I have assumed that each team member has an apartment of his/her own in the Tower, but that there is a common room and kitchen that they can visit if they want to hang out with others or don't want to cook for themselves. I can see independent adults doing that because Stark Tower must be incredibly luxurious and you know Stark would cut them a deal on the rent.

However, if Stark Tower is set up more like a frat house with real communal living, then I agree with [livejournal.com profile] sugar_fey and [livejournal.com profile] alphaflyer that full-grown, independent adults wouldn't go for that.
