ATTF: Clint, Natasha and AUs
Hello! I am this week’s ATTF host (again)! And today’s topic is the much loved Alternate Universe, or AU.

BUT more specifically than just AUs, this is about Clint and Natasha, and how you make Clint and Natasha Clint and Natasha when you’ve taken away a great deal of what makes the canonically Clint and Natasha.

SO what do you see as being fundamentally Clint and Natasha? The part of their personality and/or character that identifies them as themselves, whether they are circus performers or ex-cons or teachers or regular high school students or whatever.

For Clint I think it is (among other things) being loyal, stubborn and slightly self-sabotaging. For Natasha I think it is (again, among other things) being a fighter, in control of her emotions and quite wary. But that's just what I think, and I don't write very often so what do I know? :P

So, discuss! Rec! Argue! (Politely!) Have fun!

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

My absolute favourite Clint/Natasha AU: Two for the Show (and its sequel Upon this Winter's Night) by mousie tongue [ff.net]
[ Clint&Natasha | R | 31,000 words | high school AU | warnings: physical and verbal bullying, sexualized assault, violence, homophobia and homophobic language, swearing, child abuse, implied non-con ]
After her uncle is taken, young Natasha Romanov ends up in state's custody at a group home. She can tough it out alone... but somehow fellow resident Clint Barton becomes the reason she doesn't have to.
About the most in character AU I have read for this pairing. If you haven’t read this why? (And please, be aware of the warnings, but also that the issues are well handled and not the main focus of the story. Ratings and warnings for Two for the Show.)

My second favourite Clint/Natasha AU: No Light in this Valley by [livejournal.com profile] trysts
[ Clint/Natasha | PG-13 | 7600 words | wild west (?) AU | warnings: violence and swearing ]
30 miles to water, 20 miles to wood, 10 miles to hell and I gone there for good
Again, fantastic characterisation, and also just a really interesting setting. Clint especially is brilliant.

And two other favourites: Soiree by [livejournal.com profile] ruby_caspar
[ Clint/Natasha | PG-13 | 8600 words | Georgette Heyer Regency AU | warnings: none ]
The Dowager Duchess known as the Black Widow is the talk of the ton - rich and mysterious, the only way to meet this elusive lady is through the equally mysterious Mr Barton…
OH MY GIDDY AUNT I love this. In a way, this is still a spy story just set in Regency England, but it’s so so fantastic I’m reccing it here anyway. :P

Set The Fire To The Third Bar by [livejournal.com profile] themonkeytwin
[ Clint/Natasha | PG | 4500 words | warnings: none ]
It was a strange thing, to know you were living a life that wasn't quite your own.
Clint never runs away to the join the circus and becomes a firefighter with a feeling that he’s missing something. As a concept, it's stunning. And again, I feel it is very in character. LOVE.

Favorite Clintasha AUs, a by no means all-inclusive or in order list:

  1. Here the City Code is Lock and Load (http://archiveofourown.org/works/497651) - post-apocalyptic AU by Sproid, explicit for violence, sex, etc.

  2. Clint Barton and the Unfinished Business (http://archiveofourown.org/works/582008/chapters/1045109) by [livejournal.com profile] hufflepuffsneak - an archaeology AU and a personal favorite. Rated T, mild sexual content, swearing, action movie violence.

  3. Queen of Attolia (http://archiveofourown.org/works/579149/chapters/1039282) also by [livejournal.com profile] hufflepuffsneak - medieval-type AU and another fantastic fic. Rated Teen, violence, dismemberment, etc.

  4. How Can I Help You Today? (http://archiveofourown.org/works/482409/chapters/839337) by [livejournal.com profile] lar_laughs - drugstore AU that is delightful and hilarious. One of the first fics I read in the fandom. With hilarious gag reel included! I don't remember any warnings.

  5. bang bang, baby, you're dead (http://archiveofourown.org/works/440589) by CallMeBombshell - noir AU. Rated Teen, warnings for violence, language. I'm a sucker for a good noir.

  6. Inverse Function (http://archiveofourown.org/works/493095) by Slipsthrufingers. Genderswap AU, and one of my favorites in the genre. Rated T, language, violence, I think.

  7. treat 'em and street 'em (http://archiveofourown.org/works/480923/chapters/836173) by mmtion - a Medical AU! Natasha's a doctor, Clint's a physical therapist, and the Avengers are fantastically sorted out throughout a hospital. Lots of warnings for blood, gore, fighting, violence, swearing, basically anything hospital related.

  8. After the War (http://archiveofourown.org/works/474568) by [livejournal.com profile] ashen_key - WWII AU, and really delightful. Warnings for some language, rated Teen.

And that, my friends, are some of the AUs I adore in the fandom. I've written a few (I've got a series ongoing where Natasha and Clint are zoologists and then I turned them into pirates once, and I made Clint a--oh, that's a spoiler--in Woman in the Crosshairs), and they're always going to be my favorite thing to read. There are dozens more I can probably recommend…in lots of fandoms!

I second After the war - so so very lovely and delightful and I just wish there was more.

HOW DID I MISS OTHERS. O_O I need to read more!

Aaaaaand ... just because you rec them, I will read these (ETA the ones I haven't read already, which, now that I started going through the list, is actually 2/3 of them). Oh, and for what it's worth, I don't consider Woman in the Crosshairs A/U (based on my own personal interpretation of what that means ...).

Maybe I need to retract some of my earlier comments as too broad? Well, whatever. I love fanfic, period. Some I love better than others, and some writers have a better grasp on my favourite characters than others, or see them in ways I can/can't. And that's what makes it all fun. We read and write to our preferences, and there ain't nothing wrong with that. It's called creativity.

YES YES YES! Thank you for putting that into words. It's all a personal choice but that doesn't mean that other things shouldn't exist. I try very hard (or I will try harder) not to give my dislikes a voice. I just don't read those stories. That doesn't mean the stories are worthy and valid to the people who appreciate them. It's still creativity and NO ONE should ever stifle that!

hee, well, thank you for the compliment in an earlier comment! And yeah, what you said: it's all just a matter of acceptance. Don't read what you don't like, but don't rain on others' parades (I've been in fandoms where this is the norm and it got depressing and terrible very quickly), all that jazz.

I need to do a comment about the various types of AUs, I think. It would be entertaining, if nothing else, to quantify them.

Oh man, I am excited for some of these.

AND I am so glad someone else loves treat 'em and street 'em, because I ADORE that story. I didn't rec it here myself because 1) if I recced every story I loved here it would be OVERLOAD and 2) it isn't Clint/Natasha focussed. BUT I LOVE IT SO. Especially Bruce and Betty.

But I agree with AlphaFlyer, I wouldn't consider The Woman In the Crosshairs as a complete AU, same as I don't see my fic Strange Bird as a complete AU. However, I do class it as FANTASTIC FANFIC THAT I LOVE. So there's that. :P

Hee, when I read treat 'em and street 'em, I'm not gonna lie: I skipped the Tony/Steve stuff, not out of a sense of homophobia or anything, but just because I really can't see those two characters ending up together. I don't get in the way of anybody that does. It's just not for me. But the Nat/Clint parts are amazing, and I love Pepper in that story. Bruce and Betty's story was just tragic, but also there was a great sense of hope. They felt like real people.

You guys are probably right about Crosshairs. It's canon-compliant, and just canon-additive. And thank you for the compliment. *blush*

I am not a Steve/Tony person, but it works very well in that story. Because, as you say, they feel like real people.

And you're welcome. :)

Thanks for the recs :)

I hadn't read treat 'em and street 'em. That was pretty brilliant. So much for sleeping in this morning!

*curtsies* Thank you for the rec! Not only was it fun to write but it was cathartic at a time when I needed to think of the good things about my job.

And thank you for the list. I haven't read all of those so I will put them on my list!

My friend is a pharmacist, so I hear a lot about her job, and about some of the crazy customers from my other friend that is a cashier at CVS. It made it even funnier to read the fic. I hope your job is going better!!

And very welcome, I'm always happy to expand fic horizons. :)

The really great thing about this fic AND my job (or, at the least, the people I work with) is that it was a collective effort. We sat around and threw out ideas about what we thought would be funny. Not only was it cathartic for me but for my coworkers!

It's funny how many comments I've gotten from people who've read that story who are pharmacists or something very close. Makes me sort of happy to know that I could touch so many people!

All great recs! Your zoologists series makes me smile so, so much :D and your pirates AU is fantastically detailed! <3
