ATTF: Crossovers and Fusions
Okay, like 6 weeks ago I said I would have a better idea. Mainly because I was going to research and make a chart and possibly fill in some amazing notes and examples...

and then life happened and none of this occurred. So... that being said you might better off skipping this week unless you have an opinion.

That being said, there seems to be a lot of fusion and crossover fics in the Avengers fandom. Fandoms like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. To semi crossover/fusions with Clint Barton was William Brandt in MI4 to Phil Coulson as Mike Casper in The West Wing.

-A lot of the times I notice however that usually in these if Coulson is involved, the pairing we see is Coulson/Barton. So primarily as a N/C fan I ask is there any recs involving them in crossover/fusion related fiction?

-If you were to write a fusion or crossover fic with Clint and Natasha, what fandom? And how would it go? Would Clint be someone else? Would Natasha? Would it be like a Mr. & Mrs. Smith thing instead with the plot just be a replicated idea but catered to the heroes we know?

-What fandoms do you think fit well with The Avengers verse and the super spies?

My f-listers already know this: I've decided to do a crossover for this year's Marvel_bang: SHIELD (Barton)/James Bond. Natasha will also feature prominently, as will Nick Fury and M. Inter-agency cooperation and culture shock! I'm actually quite excited about this...

Here's the mental snippet that opened my mind to the possibilities (it may or may not appear in the final piece, in this or another form, but in the meantime it functions as my personal teaser):

Barton: "Codename's Hawkeye. Yours?"

Bond: "007."

M: "Commander Bond is one of our Double-O cadre of agents."

Barton: "That supposed to mean something to me? That Double-O thing?"

Bond: "It means 'licence to kill'."

Barton: "You need a *licence* for that?"

I think the Avengers can be crossed over with anything but, then again, I wrote a Knight's Tale AU so I think pretty much any AU or crossover works. The more fun and pretty things together, the better (IMHO).

As far as fusions go, I would really like to see a White Collar or a Covert Affairs one to celebrate fun summer shows. For me, bizarrely, the only crossover that really doesn't work is other superhero films and comics (excepting a really good Catwoman/ Black Widow fic I stumbled across ages ago). To suspend disbelief we have to make different assumptions for each universe, and when they come together it just doesn't work.
[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com on July 5th, 2013 08:57 pm (UTC)
I agree with you! I really really really LOVE crossovers and AUs and fusions and it just works for Avengers. All you need is imagination. They're so much fun. Your Knight's Tale AU was such enjoyable read and it's one of my favorite fics :D :D I love it to pieces!

I am crazy about crossovers and fusions. [livejournal.com profile] frea_o asked me few days ago to come up with the weirdest one, and my idea was Avengers/Glee. Because Tony Stark VS Sue Sylvester showdown would be hilarious, as superspies investigate something about McKinley High. (It should be slushies related. Someone should sing something about their relationship/ust, which is obvious to everyone, and it should be properly embarrassing for them.)

Did I mention I reeeally like crack? *G*

I'll give you a rec - our very own [livejournal.com profile] shenshen77 wrote an awesome, awesome Bourne legacy/Avengers crossover that features both Clint/Natasha and Aaron/Marta. It's wonderfulness on top of wonderfulness and she writes awesome action. Here is Borthers 'verse (http://archiveofourown.org/series/46329) :D :D

Tony Stark versus Sue Sylvester sounds amazing. *puts it on looong list of plot bunnies*

Seconding the rec on the Brothers 'verse.

I always used to be one of those who said they didn't like AUs and crossovers. Then I stumbled into this bar and that all changed, up to the point where I wrote a crossover myself. I really think that there are endless possibilities for crossovers with the Avengers verse. I mean Clint and Tasha are covert operatives, they can blend in anywhere :)

Crossover fic made me discover [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81 and I'm so happy about that. She wrote an awesome Castle/Avengers crossover that features Clint/Natasha and is just delightful. Random Numbers (http://head-on-home.livejournal.com/tag/series%3A%20random%20numbers) is currently at seven chapters and I hope that nuna will finish it one of these days, because I NEED IT :)

This fandom comes with lots of firsts, I think. I never liked something and that all changed sort of things happen around here ;) :D

That story made you discover me?? Really?? I am SO GLAD NOW that I wrote what's there and I really really SHOULD finish it because, dear God that crossover is FUN. So many characters, everyone is awesome. :D
[identity profile] frea-o.livejournal.com on July 5th, 2013 09:04 pm (UTC)
Oh, crossovers. I love them with unholy glee. I think I've crossed Avengers with Arrow, Chuck, and Chicago Fire and have done a couple of fusions just for kicks and giggles. It's fun trying to fit the pieces in from two different universes in, especially if you can make it so that one person from one universe influences something in the other universe, and hijinx ensue. And I love it when characters don't get along right away in a crossover. In a way, crossovers are really very similar to my one true love, the alternate universe.

Favorite crossovers:
Random Numbers (http://head-on-home.livejournal.com/13619.html) by [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81 - Castle/The Avengers where Clint Barton and Kate Beckett had a one-night-stand and whoops, mini-Barton happened.

They Will Rock You (http://archiveofourown.org/works/694569) by [livejournal.com profile] hufflepuffsneak - A Knight's Tale/The Avengers because c'mon, Clint as Ulrich von Lichtenstein will never not be brilliant. This one combines rock'n'roll and some fantastic, thoughtful Clintasha (Natasha having a lot of agency is the best thing about it) and is phenomenal.

Five Authors That Didn't Write the Avengers (http://archiveofourown.org/works/516570) by rhymer23 - Not Clintasha in the slightest (I don't think either of them is actually in the stories), but....Thor gets Pooh drunk. As in Winnie the Pooh. Plus, Iron Man in an Austen novel.

To Fly Like a Moron (http://archiveofourown.org/works/506876) by shadydave - MST3K/The Avengers starring Darcy Lewis as Puma Man. Yes. That Puma Man. I've rec'd this before, but it never gets old.

Whispered on the winds (http://archiveofourown.org/works/805748) by Gryphonrhi, pentapus - Highlander/Avengers with Natasha meeting up with Methos. I don't know much about Highlander, but I still thought this was a fantastic blending of the two universes with characters that reacted to each other in very interesting ways.

Currently I'm reading a Welcome to Night Vale and Avengers crossover, but it's Clint/Coulson and obscure as all get out, so I won't share here. But crossovers are wonderful and should be celebrated.

I know it's probably gauche to toot my own horn, but if the hits I'm getting on these (http://archiveofourown.org/series/33289) are any indication, people are all over the idea of the Leverage folk playing with the superheroes. In addition to my Clint/Quinn stories, I know there are a bunch of Clint/Eliot stories, and I've written one Eliot/Natasha.

I was also runner up in the NC-17 category at the Fulcrum Awards last year for a Leverage/Avengers fusion/AU type thing.

I have, on the back burner (the very very back burner - like... it's at the bottom of my garden, it so 'back') an Avengers/Harry Potter fusion that I would love to finish apart from I don't really know where it's going. And I only really started it because of an owl, and it's only got as far as it has because I made a map of the magical countries of North America (which I love :P)

In terms of fusions I love; ones with Firefly. Because I love all fusions with Firefly. And because of one particular quote, I'm craving an American Gods fusion... or something. Or maybe it's just cos the quote comes from American Gods. But anyway. And I like Supernatural fusions. And, of course, the fandom-required HDM fusion. Which I have thoughts on here.

As to fusions I love, other than the ones recced here already:

> In Two Straight Lines in Rain or Shine by [livejournal.com profile] sienamystic (Avengers/Firefly | PG | no warnings)

> The Night Circus by [livejournal.com profile] lar_laughs (Avengers/Night Circus | PG | no warnings)

> Mr. and Mrs. Barton (Or: Why Natasha Sends Jennifer Aniston an Annual Apologetic Fruit Basket) by shellybell (Avengers/Mr and Mrs Smith | NC-17 | violence)

> Ode to Joy by [livejournal.com profile] tinnytins (Avengers/Firefly | PG | no warnings)

I... didn't know how much I wanted an Avengers/Harry Potter fusion until just now. Although with my muse, I would take it an make it into a complete AU. I volunteer if you ever want to bounce ideas/plots/thoughts off of someone! :D

Also, Firefly for the win!

Because I'm genuinely curious: what is the difference between a cross-over and a fusion, and a fusion and an AU? As I understand it, a cross-over links two shows while maintaining their originality (so to speak), while an AU traditionally involves rewriting one of the shows involved to make it fit into the other. Where does a fusion fall in that spectrum? What are your definitions for these terms?
franztastisch: bench[personal profile] franztastisch on July 5th, 2013 09:46 pm (UTC)
How I see it is (using Harry Potter as an example);

Crossover - Natasha and Clint meet Harry Potter and shinanigans ensue

Fusion - Natasha and Clint go to a Hogwarts type school with Hogwarts type magic but you never meet Harry or any of the characters from the HP books - you mention Hogwarts, or Harry, but the storyline of your story has nothing to do with the storyline of HP (pre-, during or post-). Alternatively, Clint is Harry and Natasha is Hermione. That's another way fusions can work. Retelling a story bt with different people playing the fusion'verse's characters. (Fusion is the muddiest to define, I find)

AU - you make up your own magical society that has nothing to do with Harry Potter at all. Seeing as AU stands for Alternate Universe, I've always taken it to mean that it's a universe that you yourself have made up, or that is comepltely different to the world/jobs the characters you're using usually inhabit/do, but has no link to any stories (film/TV/books/comics etc) that already exist.

I wrote a tiny HP fusion once, and I think I've shared it here before, but here it is below. (Rated G, no warnings.)

Clint wakes in the dimness of the boy's dorm, Steve's hand on his shoulder.

"Is it time?" he whispers to the older boy, and Steve nods. Silently, Clint dresses, being careful not to wake the other boys in his year - Steve is a 7th year to Clint's 5th, so there are still four sleepers in the room.

The two of them shuffle down the hall to the Hufflepuff common room, big squishy couches and a roaring fire at all hours, but devoid of students now. If Steve wasn't Head Boy, this would be more dangerous, but they do this every month, at the full moon, and they've got a pattern now.

They have to flatten against the wall on their way to the astronomy tower, as they hear Headmaster Fury's tell-tale footsteps, and the soft murmur of Professor Hill's voice, discussing the meeting she's had with some parent or another, but they pass without seeing the boys - or without acknowledging them, you never know with Fury - and it's only a matter of moments before they're racing quietly up the stairs to their meeting.

Bruce and Tony, the resident Ravenclaws, are already there, pointing out constellations and muttering in hushed voices. It's a matter of minutes before Thor and Phil appear in their Gryffindor red robes, and Natasha and Loki pull themselves up from their common room in the dungeon.

Steve begins.

"Well met," he intones, and the others echo his greeting. This part is scripted, and they know it by heart. Now is the history.

"Since the days of the Second Wizarding War and Dumbledore's Army, there have always been students at the ready, to defend our school and remain vigilant. As laid out in the charter, signed by our founders Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley, there are two members of each house present tonight. We will preserve the integrity of this fine establishment, and protect our classmates to the best of our ability. May no student ever lose their life in these halls again."

"Never again," the others echo.

"Ravenclaw," Steve says, glancing at Tony and Bruce. "Report?"

They go through the houses, each talking about anything they've seen that might be even a little suspicious.

It's an honor to be an Avenger, to be chosen to represent your house. They keep the memory of those who have come before, and guard the futures of those who are yet to be. And above all, they stay secret. If it were to get out who the Avengers were - well, all the students know they exist, and some have guesses as to the membership, but the counsel only functions when they are trusted by other students, when they can observe unsuspected. It's what makes people like Tony and Loki such valued members - no one would suspect such troublemakers to be Avengers.

Clint gives his report last, as the most junior member, and glances around the circle as Steve calls for analysis and thoughts. In the daylight they're barely even friends, maybe they nod at each other in the hallway, but here, in the dark of night at the top of the Astronomy Tower, they are a Force, unstoppable and eternal.

Once upon a time, back when I first started writing Avengers, I did a crossover of sorts with Leverage where Parker was really Bobbie Morse with amnesia. It was going to have chapters to further explain the Clint/Natasha and Eliot/Parker(Bobbie) relationship but then I got sidetracked and never continued it. It's one that I've been contemplating picking back up and working on (or reworking as I'm not completely sure I had a handle on the characters at that point).

Sometime in the future, I would love to write a crossover with Arrow.

I'm a huge crossover fan. Mixing characters you love with other characters you love, it's win-win.

A couple of recs that spring to mind that haven't already been mentioned:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/340169?page=1#comments -- Unexpected Faces by lucdarling -- Burn Notice/Avengers -- Summary: I don't like thinking about the past but sometimes it doesn't give me a choice. Like when my former contact in the Soviet Bloc takes a seat at Carlito's like she's waiting to meet someone.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/857568 -- Bad Altitude by [livejournal.com profile] frea_o -- Summary: Felicity Smoak knows how to fly planes, she’s just never done it in real life before. Natasha has flown in many situations, she’s just usually sober.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/631822/chapters/1142934 -- Mend by [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81 -- Summary: Ever since she was saved from the Replicators, Elizabeth Weir is living under watchful eyes of Stargate Command and their scientists. A series of dangerous events convinces Elizabeth to contact The Avengers, while people on both sides are in danger.

Crossovers I'd like to see? For some reason the ones that keep playing out in my head are crossovers with shows I loved when I was a kid/teen.

The A-Team -- Fury knows Hannibal Smith from his days in the Army.

Dallas -- Ewing Oil finds mysterious something-or-other while drilling and Natasha has to infiltrate the company.

The Love Boat -- A new form of brainwashing is suspected of being tested on cruisers making them suseptible to suggestion. Natasha goes undercover as a dancer in one of the live shows and Clint goes in as a passenger.

Airwolf -- SHIELD wants the design for the helicopter. Fury and Archangel have a history.

MacGyver -- SHIELD and The Phoenix Foundation have to share resources to stop the bad guy.

I may need to seek professional help. :)

Technical query: On AO3, crossovers are easily managed -- you double tag, and they show up under both fandoms for people cruising the site. On FFN, though, you have to file under "crossover", and those never appear on the main fandom site and get a lot less attention. Is there a way around that? The FFN crossover black hole is the main reason I posted my Star Trek: Voyager/TNG crossovers as just "Voyager" stories -- but that in turn means I can't list a TNG character even if he is a main protagonist. Does anyone else have any experience with that?

So me and my firend Emy have this crazy little Avengers/Stargate Atlantis thing going on in our RP I thought I would share.

Obviously this doesn't follow the comics with the backstory we got with Natasha her parents still died but was adopted by a nice Russian couple. The adoptive father died at some unknown point in time leaving the two alone. About a year or so later Nat's adoptive mother met the widowed Patrick Sheppard (John Sheppard's father) and the two were married. Natasha was particularly close with her stepbrother John even though she hated her Stepfather. Unfortunately the marriage between Nat's adoptive mother ended...however John and Natasha kept in touch until she disappeared during a supposed "rebellious streak" (This is when Natasha went to the Red Room and became a murderous assassin/soldier).

John and Natasha reconnected after Natasha went to S.H.I.E.L.D. But contact became less frequent when he went to Atlantis.

Now here where it gets Stargate Atlantisy.....

After the whole ordeal with Loki....S.H.I.E.L.D aligned with the SGC. As part of the deal Fury agreed to send some agents to aid the Atlantis Expedition. Natasha (who is played by Emy) immediately volunteered after finding out her Stepbrother who is her only family at this point was part of the expedition. Clint (Who I play) followed because he knew he couldn't function as well without his partner also his lover on the board (even though he had NO idea what he was getting into).

We have a lot of fun with it a lot of Wraith and Genii ass kicking (Natasha particularly hates Kolya who is alive and well and is the Genii leader in our rpverse) and double dates with John and Elizabeth (who we also play on the board and are married because we refuse to let the replicator monstrosity happen)

But eventually when I have the patience I want to put this in fic form. I am on the fence on putting it in my big damn crossover series Colliding Worlds...or just make it a solo series.

I kind of heart writing AU fusions in particular, or what if stories where you try to figure out how one thing happening differently would change things. I have a whole separate Scrivener file of them languishing on my hard drive. I like trying to figure out the character dynamics and how to parallel them.

For the Avengers Xover Big Bang last year, I wrote a crossover with Person of Interest, which features Clint, Natasha, Coulson, Fury, and Maria. It brings John Reese into the Avengers 'verse, but nothing really of the rest of POI -- it's AU to the pilot of Person of Interest. Basically, it assumes that Fury got to John before or instead of Finch. (Reese is a superspy & Nat is a superspy - it just seemed logical that they'd crossed paths before)

So if that sounds like it'd be someone's cup of tea, who hasn't read it yet: Holding the Light (http://archiveofourown.org/works/587484), eventual Nat/Reese, with Clint, Coulson, and Steve also playing pretty major parts. Rated M, 42K words.

I love fusions and crossovers! One of these days I really am going to finish my mythos academy one.

Actually, this last weekend was my city's annual anime/video games convention, and I had a blast (at least until I saw the six o'clock news, and found out about Cory Monteith *sniffle*).

But one of the screenings was for fate/zero, and gave me an idea this morning, if you're familiar with the fate/stay night franchise at all. A future (or even past) Holy Grail War, where Clint is called as the Archer, and Natasha called as Assassin. They were married when they were alive, and remember that now, so do they tell their Masters, or what? Because it doesn't really matter to them which of them wins, since they both want the same Wish from the Grail... another lifetime together, where they get to love each other and kick ass together but without being so broken before they met, and with few enough enemies that they can risk raising a family.

Hmmm, may end up changing an entry for Het_bigbang. I certainly don't feel like doing a Glee one anymore... *sigh*.
