Discussion Post: Civil War
Welcome to the dedicated space for all Captain America: Civil War discussion! Bring your squee, meta, pics, all the things! Please note: UNTIL OTHERWISE STATED (AFTER THE MOVIE HAS BEEN RELEASED WORLDWIDE) THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE CIVIL WAR CAN BE DISCUSSED ON BE_COMPROMISED.

A few rules:

1) Please mark whether or not your comment has spoilers to try and help anyone who is trying to remain spoiler free to avoid that thread.

2) Do understand though that there will be a LOT spoilers in the comments to this post and there may be no way to avoid them. If you are absolutely against being spoiled then please avoid this post until you've seen the film. It's okay, this post is going to be active for quite some time, you won't be missing out!

3) Remember that message from your Mods post Age of Ultron? Character bashing and ship wars are assassinable offences. We love differences in opinion and discussing all the things, but we also want to keep this bar a positive fandom space. If you think someone might be hurt by something you're about to say then either don't say it or find a better way of putting it. Please keep in mind that we are about the love.

4) Yes, even though the film we are discussing is Civil War where everyone wants to beat up everyone else. Shush. Play nice.

5) HAVE FUN!

I'm seeing it on Saturday! I'm spoiled as all hell (because I prefer to be spoiled sometimes), but I'm really looking forward to it.

You'll love it!!! I just saw it. And now I'm going to bed...

I have to wait until next week, but like you, am spoiled as hell (thank god for friends who saw special previews last week!) I don't think I would have been able to take it without knowing ahead of time some very basic things.
[identity profile] perpetuations.livejournal.com on April 28th, 2016 12:12 pm (UTC)
Watched it yesterday! Can't wait to discuss.

Cap 3: First reaction
To avoid spoiling anyone who doesn't want to be, here's the link to my LJ where I posted some thoughts (http://alphaflyer.livejournal.com/109327.html). (It's F-locked though ...):

spoiler-free quick reaction
Saw it on Saturday! Really enjoyed it, all the fun dialogue and sass :D (Also, keep your butt planted in your seat for the two post-credit scenes. Who leaves before the very end of a Marvei these days, seriously.)

Meta still pending. And I may be committing fic.

I'm mostly the only one to stay in the cinema although I'm not the only one who watches the movie. I seriously don't get it. :o/ It's not like they need to catch a bus because it's too late or stuff. :o/

RE: spoiler-free quick reaction
A bunch of people walked out as the credits started to role, and sure, maybe they had places to go, transport to catch. But the ones who hover in the aisles? And the ones who leaves after they've seen one post-credit scene? You might as well sit and stay, y'know? Ah well, I like to stay to the end of films anyway - see if there's any amusing names or things in the credits, listen to the music.

RE: spoiler-free quick reaction
Some stayed for the first scene but walked when the scene was over.

And: It was around 05:00 pm. So there were still enough busses or trains to take after this time. :o)

I only left one single time because I watched the movie at 08:00 pm. It was the last bus (at 10:30 pm) and I didn't want to walk the 20 km / 13 mi to get home. ^^ So I left before the after-credit-scene.

But it was afternoon now. So I don't know why they left. (Their loss, I think. ^^)

some teeny spoils
I hadn't read any spoilers so I wasn't sure if there was going to be 1 or 2 post credits scenes but I stayed until the very, very end! And the movie was awesome!!! I liked the small comedic parts and as a purely MCU fan, I liked that the Avengers causing so much mayhem was finally discussed. As it is with any action movie, the effects after the destruction caused by the awesome fight scenes is never shown and I'm kinda glad that the avengers had to face this problem. It really added some realism back to the movies.

RE: some teeny spoils
Yay, glad you enjoyed it! I LOVE the exploration of consequences they've got going on! (Gah, i need to meta, but i'm away from home with only my mobile. Goal for tomorrow!) (Also probably icon, but I need to wait for the screen caps...unless i do quote icons...but not yet, because spoilers :) )

I watched it on Saturday and I thought it was okay.

I will watch it again next week and hopefully it will answer those questions I still have. :o/

Haha, i have to watch more than once to check things too :)

Saw it a few days ago, I thought it was good, though not as great as Avengers (matter of personal taste, I'd say). I enjoyed a lot of moments, though I was a bit disappointed that Nat didn't get that much to do, at least in comparison to her role in Cap 2.
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2016 09:36 pm (UTC)
i think Nat not getting too much to do was a function of too many characters, too little time. I mean, Clint didn't even show up until halfway through the movie! And even Cap didn't really get to star in his own movie. I've seen it referred to as Ironman 4, and that's not all that wrong...

I think nothing will ever beat Avengers. Like Star Wars Episode 4, it basks in the glamour of being the first of its kind (yeah, yeah, I know there was a Hulk and a Thor and a Cap and 2 Ironmans before. I mean the first TEAM movie). It holds a special place in my heart.

[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 08:53 pm (UTC)
Ironically, I think the movie kind of suffered from having to be a Captain America movie. I feel like they might have been able to balance the characters more effectively had CW been an Avengers movie. But either way, Tony would have chewed up a good amount of screen time because Marvel is silly.

Yeah, I've been waiting for another Marvel film to give me the same sense of awe and joy that Avengers did, and I've come to accept that this simply won't happen, not because no other film is as good, but because Avengers was The First for me, and I went in with no expectations or anxieties because I didn't know or care about the MCU at that point. Now every MCU film I see has the weight of my expectations and anxieties surrounding the treatment of certain characters, which, to be fair, is not the film's fault.
[identity profile] kiss-me-cassie.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 10:30 pm (UTC)
That whole second paragraph. YES.
[identity profile] meatball42.livejournal.com on May 10th, 2016 04:59 am (UTC)
I think the problem here is that we're expecting a film to equally focus on everyone, which, a) the first Avengers didn't actually, it focused on Tony and Steve and Bruce and Natasha, and Loki, to an extent. CW focused on Steve and Bucky and Tony with strong secondary Natasha and T'Challa and Wanda, and I'm actually impressed that it managed to include all those storylines as competently as it did- the Russo's movies in this franchise have been a lot more even-handed and streamlined than Whedon's more explosive and character-focused, IMO.

b) This was /meant/ to be a partisan movie, focused on Cap and characters relevant to his theme and focus, which, in this case, was the freedom/accountability dichotomy, with Steve cast as the purist and Tony (& Natasha) as the compromisers. Wanda's and Bucky's storylines were examples.

Personally, I really liked that it had so many characters, even with uneven screentime (personally I'm like where the fuck was Hope Van Dyne), because that's more true to life than would be a story where everyone had an equal hand in driving along the plot. You ever been in a big friend group where all the drama is always focused on two or three people? Yeah. Tony and Steve are those guys.

I've been reading too many spoilers, and 1 or 2 spoiler fics, and seeing newly released pictures and I'm now kinda scared my 'ship allegiance is gonna shift and ... I don't want it to! Bah.

THIS is the reason I am not spoiler free. I can't take that much stress. I can't even take it when I do know spoilers. Heh.
[identity profile] esgeee.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 03:29 am (UTC)
Who do you mainly ship (other than Clint and Nat)? I saw it a few hours ago and Steve and Sharon are super cute together. Sorry to spoil, but there is this one really funny scene with them and Falcon and Bucky and it was pretty cute. I can def see some fics coming from that
[identity profile] morrighangw.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 04:03 am (UTC)
That scene cracked me up SO HARD. Sam & Bucky are treasures and I adore them!
inkvoices: avengers:lmao[personal profile] inkvoices on May 8th, 2016 07:03 am (UTC)
THE PAIR OF THEM IN THE CAR. AND THE 'I HATE YOU'. These two cracked me up!
[identity profile] kiss-me-cassie.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 10:32 pm (UTC)
I want all Sam and Bucky, all the time. Just... that pair. :) :) :)

Me and my cinema buddy actually played 'how many ships can fandom get out of this film' and lo, there were many :D
[identity profile] meatball42.livejournal.com on May 10th, 2016 04:50 am (UTC)
did you save that list? i adore rarepairs and crackships, so I'd love to see where I could take things :D

Unfortunatly we didn't write it down, we were just chatting. (We so should have recorded those hours of conversation lol.) But, of the top of my head, let's see what I can remember...
Tony/Steve - obviously, Steve/Bucky, Tony/Steve/Bucky, Steve/Sharon, Clint/Laura, Clint/Natasha, Clint/Natasha/Laura, Natasha/T'Challa, Natasha/Bruce, Sam/Steve, Sam/Bucky, Sam/Steve/Bucky, Vision/Wanda, Tony/Rhodes, one-sided Scott/EVERONE - such a fangirl lol, Tony/Aunt May - however much NO, someone's gonna go there, because this is fandom and fandom goes EVERYWHERE, ha...
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 12th, 2016 05:06 am (UTC)
I want Spidey & Tony. Not in a creepy way, but in a "I need some advice. My new webslime won't set. Can I come over?" kind of way. Like with that kid in IM3. "You're the mechanic. MAKE something!!"
inkvoices: avengers:iron not the worst thing[personal profile] inkvoices on May 17th, 2016 08:21 pm (UTC)
I believe RDJ is signed up for Spiderman: Homecoming so this could happen...

Tony and kids is absolutely a thing. I was chatting about this with someone the other day and we came to the conclusion that Tony as a kid was probably a little adult kind of kid, in the using big words and not wanting to be condescended to kind of way, but he's also an adult in a kid kind of way. So the way he interacts with kids seems to be to treat them like people. Only it's Tony Stark's idea of people. As opposed to his idea of business rivals, useless idiots, arm candy etc. But yeah, Tony and kids.

I honestly keep seeing these Clint and Wanda gifs and... gah! Must remember father/daughter dynamics and not let it get me down.

(I am not hardcore Steve/anyone, so I'm good with him and anyone and he doesn't ruin any headcanons or 'ships.)
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 08:56 pm (UTC)
That scene was hilarious, it got the biggest laugh in the theatre when I saw it.

Personally I came out of the film shipping Nat/T'Challa, because they had great chemistry.

(still sailing high on the Nat/Clint seas, of course!)
[identity profile] morrighangw.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 04:17 am (UTC)
I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did! They did a superb job of balancing everything so it wasn't just a giant angst-fest (which, let's be honest, it totally could have been). Am I the only one who had serious Bucky-feels? Cuz I had SERIOUS Bucky-feels (darn you Brubaker and your amazing Captain America & Winter Soldier comics runs!). Black Panther was spectacular in this, and I can't wait for his standalone movie.

Definitely needed more Nat & Clint, but there were just too many characters for either of them to get more screen time.
[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2016 08:57 pm (UTC)
Black Panther was amazing, he was the highlight of the movie for me. A+ casting.
[identity profile] meatball42.livejournal.com on May 10th, 2016 04:51 am (UTC)
It's so weird that I and everyone I've talked to agrees with this, considering how little actual screentime he got. I think it was just that every second he had was so entirely on point, like not a single criticism can be levied. I agree, I cannot wait for his standalone!!
[identity profile] meatball42.livejournal.com on May 10th, 2016 05:06 am (UTC)
straight up spoiling
THE FIGHT SCENES WERE SO GOOD. OMGGGGGG. I have to say I adore the Russo's fight choreography style. This movie harkened back to WInter Soldier with all the fancy legwork and spinny and flippy and actual hand-to-hand, whereas the Avengers movies have had a lot more... idk video game attacks? I'm no expert, but I think this looked way better and just felt more genuine. (tbf the Avengers movies had Hulk and Thor instead of Panther and Bucky, so)

While I wish there had been more Natasha, I actually adored the part they gave her in this conflict, because adaptability is her thing. "I'm reading the terrain," tbh everyone should have listened to her, idc about Vision's equations or Tony's justifications, Natasha is the one whose job is literally analyzing human nature and playing whatever part is required to meet the goal, even if you get tied to a chair above a hole in the ground or spat at by an angry demi-god or have to sign away some agency is the process, she will get you there, in fewer pieces than anyone else.

Also I can't believe it took five movies for the Widow's Bites to finally get used in the proper manner.

I have way more thoughts but I'll not spam everyone with them!
