ATTF: Looking Forward to 2018
HELLO BEST BAR. New Year, New Excitements, New Frustrations, NEW MOD (HELLO!)

Yes, ‘tis I, your new mod, kicking off [community profile] be_compromised 2018 ATTF with: THINGS WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2018.

2018 has to be better than 2017 right? I mean, for one, we’re getting Black Panther this February which obviously makes this February better than last, right? And this is also the year of Infinity War and Bearded Cap (!!!).

But other than that, what are you looking forward to? Do you have any fics, fanvids, or other creative works you hope to start/progress/finish this year? (Can we have a sneak peek?) Have you made any new year's resolutions? What films/books/TV shows are coming out this year that you're excited about?

Let's have a chat about good things! And I know that this is a Clint/&Natasha comm but we’re all friends here right? Branch out! Is there a non-Marvel film that you’re stoked for? (They do exist: strange but true!) Excited for a book that’s being released this year? Tell us about it! Maybe someone else is excited about it too. (I, for one, am excited about Nick Hawkaway’s Gnomon being released in paperback this year so I can finally read it.)

How to play: copy and paste the contents of the text box below into a comment and fill in the answers, then have a chat with people about the great things 2018 has in store.

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

MORE RADIO AU *runs around in circles screaming with joy*

And you want book suggestions, you say? I don't have goodreads but I have book suggestions! What do you like? And limit me else I'll go mad. Five? Five is a good number (I used to be a bookseller, can you tell?)
gabrielle[personal profile] gsparkle on January 6th, 2018 05:50 pm (UTC)
WE'LL SEE. You'll have to help me figure out how to make Natasha's perspective different enough :)

YES BOOK SUGGESTIONS!!! Five is good - I like lighter fiction and/or mysteries during the school year, nothing that I have to analyze, and (shocking literally no one, I'm sure) I like a good romantic plot line. Not a requirement, though!

I WILL HAPPILY DO THAT. Natasha POV or Steve/Bucky, I am up for either. :D

Yay books! OKAY:

1. Six of Crows and The Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. THE MOST FUN. It's basically fantasy Ocean's Eleven. All the characters are delightful.
2. The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker. A golem and a djinni meet in 1930s New York. Everything is just wonderful. If you've read the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, it's like that. If you haven't read that book, READ THAT BOOK.
3. Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovich. This is actually a mystery! Or, sort of. Police procedural but with magic! Very British with the most familiar, multicultural London I have ever read. Plus there's about seven books right now so it should keep you going. They're great.
4. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Set in Iceland in the 1800s and about the last woman executed for murder. Very atmospheric and VERY good.
5. Alif the Unseen by G Willow Wilson. Arab fantasy! Wonderful stuff. <3

My reading is skewed towards sci-fi/fantasy so sorry if that's not really your jam. And I don't read all that much overly romantic fiction either, though the Night Circus and Six of Crows have strong romantic plotlines. Hope you find something you like! And feel free to pester me for others, I have many I can share! (As you can tell from the fact that I said I'd give you five and in fact technically recommended thirteen)

Just hopping in to say that if you have any interest in audiobooks, even a little, Kobda Holdbrook-Smith's narration of the Rivers of London books is utterly sublime. Also, the first book got re-titled to Midnight Riot in the US, just to be confusing, I guess. But I firmly second the rec!

And I just googled this out of curiosity and his name is apparently Kobna. But EXCELLENT. I want more audiobooks. (I will forever be sad that the audiobook of LotR is crappy.)

Indeed it is! (::face-palm::) And I googled it before I typed the comment, just to be sure I got it right, sigh. ::returns to chug a little more cough syrup::

He is *fabulous* though.

Some brief YouTubing has already endeared him to me. I must download them ALL.

(If I may recommend you an audiobook back, Simon Prebble reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is fabulous. And if you haven't read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, I HIGHLY recommend)

Oh, I will look into that! I keep trying to read JS&MN, but never can seem to gain enough momentum. I'm in the car a lot, though, so I have better luck with longer books there, thanks!

In my personal opinion, the audiobook makes JSMN incredibly accessible, though the footnotes are a little distracting. But Simon Prebble is just so low-key sarcastic, it's brilliant. :D

I also loved this :)

BOOKS!
I've read all of these except Burial Rites (which is in my pile, aha) and seconded :)

I think perhaps these might also be up your alley:

1. All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater
Here is a thing that everyone wants: a mircale. Here is a thing that everyone fears: what it takes to get one. Colardo 1962. A family who can perform miracles and the pilgrims who come seeking them. Renegade radio. Love. One of my favourites from 2017.

2. The Rook by Daniel O'Malley
Essentially what the magical M15 would be in Harry Potter. Complete with civil service bureaucracy and hilarity. It starts with our female, middling-aged protagonist waking up in a park in London with amnesia surrounded by dead bodies with a letter from her former self in her pocket telling her that someone wants her dead. She has to figure out what's going on. Whilst figuring out what the hell her job even is and how to do it. Amusement, espionage, magic.

3. City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong
Depends how dark you like your books, but Armstrong does steamy romance and if you like mystery - there is a town in the middle of nowhere and off the grid that takes in people on the run. Casey is a homocide dectective with a secret who let's her best friend, on the run from an abusive ex, get them in. They want Casey, because the town has had it's first murder and everyone has secrets...

I'm on goodreads here !

Re: BOOKS!
The Rook! That book is great. Have you read the sequel? A bit bad-fanfic-y but really good fun. :D

Re: BOOKS!
It is in THE PILE. The pile which is...more than one pile... *whistles innocently*
