ATTF: Music and Musicals
Hello, oh denizens of This Bar.

Please forgive the lateness of this post- I could give you many excuses, but the truth is that I forgot yesterday was Friday. My life is the most difficult of them all.

MOVING ON.

Today I want to talk to you about music and our spies.

What kind of music do you think they like, if they like any at all? Does Clint listen to Panic! At the Disco! when he works out? Does Natasha like to make love to Mahler?

And while we're at it, what about when you're creating? What kind of music gets you in the spysassin mood? Do you have a C/N anthem? Are there any fics that you like that use music in them, or inspire you to listen to a specific song?

Under the cut: Music! To listen to!

These are some of my favorite Clint/Natasha songs - ones that get me in a mental place to write about our spies.

Hit the Lights - Bodybag

Suzanne Vega - Marlene on the Wall

All Time Low - Coffee Shop Soundtrack

Damien Rice - Cannonball

Stars - The Night Starts Here

Erin McCarley - Love Save The Empty

So. What are yours?

Things to remember:
1) Always label NSFW (Not Safe For Work) stuff in the title and post under a cut.
2) Fic and artwork needs to have a rating and warnings (or you can say that you’ve chosen not to use warnings).
3) For people with annoying internet connections, say in the title if a comment is graphic/images/gif-heavy and post picspams under a cut.
4) Have a damn good time! (Because if that’s not happening then this post has clearly failed.)

My Clint listens to the Dave Matthews Band. Because everyone should listen to the Dave Matthews Band. Otherwise, in my head he listens to country and classic rock. (But I also like the idea of him listening to jazz and swing and electro swing and that kind of stuff because my Clint can also DANCE.)

Natasha likes Sigur Ros, because she can't speak Icelandic and Vonlenska isn't a real language. She doesn't want to know what they're saying. It's not a good day when she finds out that Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása means Good Weather For Airstrikes.

As to my own C/N songs - Laura Marling's Night Terror (I woke up and he was screaming, I'd left him dreaming. I rolled over and shake him tightly, and whispered "if they want you, oh they're gonna have to fight me") and Kate Bush's Running up that Hill (if I only could make a deal with God and get him to swap our places). And Lindsey Stirling's Crystallize, for completely personal reasons that don't really make much sense to anyone other than me. Though maybe [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81 might get it. Maybe.

Also the line lay your head where my heart used to be from Tom Waits' Green Grass (via Scarlett Johansson obvs). And Good Woman by Cat Power when I want to be really depressing.

Anuna gets it ;) ;) Also, Lindsey Sterling is amazing. And YES to Dave Matthews and classic rock and country music, but to everything else, too.

Crash into me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7ph3wWMcFQ) is such a fine C/N song.

"You wear nothing but yourself, but you wear it so well".

Well, I'm about to get on another plane (hello, Warsaw and the Country That Vowels Forgot) so I will drop a quick comment and then be silent for a very long time.

In my head canon (and a couple of my fics, specifically The Skies Over Manhattan, In the Service and The Pool), Clint is a Springsteen fan. Music that is working class accessible and direct, yet complex and profound in places; sometimes urgent and upbeat, sometimes pensive and bluesy; dedicated and committed; shreds of a saxophone bleeding into a summer's night. U2, as well, plus some of the saxophone greats of the past (Charlie Parker). Natasha would probably prefer some Tchaikovsky, but she tolerates the Springsteen when he puts it on.

Oh, and Dylan. Clint likes Dylan. My current WIP uses bits of the lyrics from "Hard Rain" for chapter headings. But I think Natasha would draw the line here; that nasal twanging and occasional atonality would grate on her. ("You call that singing?? That man can't carry a tune in a bucket.") Clint vacates the premises on similar grounds when she turns on Stravinsky or any of the other twelve-tone Russians.
franztastisch: regina[personal profile] franztastisch on May 25th, 2013 09:49 pm (UTC)
Haha I love this. I think Natasha would have trouble with anyone who can't really sing. Leonard Cohen would drive her up the wall. :P
[identity profile] alphaflyer.livejournal.com on May 25th, 2013 10:51 pm (UTC)
That is too funny. I was going to mention a Cohen allergy, but then I didn't. We are so obviously on the same wavelength. (But she does like his songs when they're done by someone else, like Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat and k.d. lang's cover of "Hallelujah". (Clint gets a mixture of nervous and excited whenever that line about the kitchen chair comes around, though, and she gets that gleam in her eyes.)

Oh, and I lied about the long silence. I'm now in the lounge at the airport. Free wifi, so what do I do? Go back and comment ... For another 5 minutes, anyway.

I agree with Natasha re Dylan. LOL.

Oh and Springsteen - if there's a musician that fits Clint, it's him, because Springsteen sings about ordinary people and messed up lives, and who can understand that better than Clint? Those songs bleed - pain, disappointment, misfortune, despise from those who have it better than people Springsteen sings about; but they're also hopeful, raw, powerful and refusing to give up.

Actually my song for post-New York battle Clint? Wrecking ball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqASHIMbkcg). For reasons. And feels. Also, I like his Let's be friends (skin to skin) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEg8HBegPPY) for Clint and Nat.

YES! Wrecking Ball. Totally, totally. (I have him wear a t-shirt from the Wrecking Ball tour in "The Pool" ...) Also, Promised Land.
[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com on May 25th, 2013 11:12 pm (UTC)
Oh this bit:

Yeah we know that come tomorrow, none of this will be here
So hold tight to your anger
Hold tight to your anger
Hold tight to your anger, and don't fall to your fears

So raw and powerful and, when you think what the song is about, the outcome contains little hope - but I find there's lot of hope and strength in the attitude, "come on, take your best shot" (I'm not afraid). That's very Clint to me.
[identity profile] sienamystic.livejournal.com on May 26th, 2013 03:00 am (UTC)
I'm with you on the type of music I see Clint listening to, but I go with John Hiatt instead of Springsteen. At the moment, my top C/N song is Icy Blue Heart. Also I want him and Natasha roadtripping to Riding With the King and Tennessee Plates. Once they're all done playing Hiatt, he can teach Natasha the lyrics to King of the Road.

Hello, my name is Anuna and I have a soundtrack problem. Aka most of my fics come with a soundtrack. And getting them right is almost as important as writing itself. I find that music helps me get into the right mood, mindset, and sometimes music even causes me to write things.

Lately my C/N anthem, my Natasha anthem and a song that's pretty much driving one of my fics is Shake it out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbN0nX61rIs) by Florence and the machine. I love the lyrics, i love the music, I love the energy of that song, it just hits all the right buttons (It's defiant and angry and a scream for freedom, and I just have lots of feelings about that song).

Another song that caused me to stop doing what I was doing and start writing is completely different than my previous pick; it's Alan Jackson's Drive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQe3DKDQRRs). (talk about country music. I can't write without country music.) The story does have Clint/Natasha but it's mostly about Clint and barney of all people. I'm having fun poking at their childhood and allowing them an attempt to fix their relationship (note - it's not comics!barney. Like lot of people in this fandom I take a theme and play with it and change some things.)

Other music? My Clint is more musical than Natasha - she can listen to all kinds of things, she enjoys lot of different music styles. Her taste is more diverse than Clint's, who sticks to rock and country; and is a Springsteen and Dire Straits fan. Natasha doesn't like all of Springsteen but they can enjoy Dire Straits together. *nods* Natasha likes Sting, though. She also loves Irish music.

When it comes to character anthems, I have Local hero theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh2GFoDae8Y) for Clint and Vanessa Mae's performance of I'm a doun for lack of Johnnie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh9j0-Ey3kw) for Clint. (I like calm and sophisticated for him) For Natasha, Hans Zimmer's Nyah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWP2Hz9U61Q) (seriously, if Natasha was a dance, I would imagine her as flamenco); and Roxanne's veil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2h2MSZbHTM) by Vangelis.

I need to read this fic!!! I think about Barney a lot and he isn't the canon-Barney to me either... I read something once about how the best thing a parent can do for the their kids is let their eyes light up upon seeing them... I don't think Barney was a parent to Clint but I think he gave him SOMETHING that contributed to his heart, at least at some point in their lives.

[identity profile] anuna-81.livejournal.com on May 25th, 2013 10:42 pm (UTC)
I'll post here when the fic is done :) In my headcanon Barney is five years older than Clint. He always tried to look out for him, he tried to be a parent/parental figure, but it was just too much for Barney who was a kid himself and needed someone to take care of him. I'm using elements of canon and obviously writing their story in a way that allows them to fix their relationship. (As for their parents, more precisely their dad? Abusive alcoholic, yes, but not a monster like he's usually written. he gave them both bad and good memories and for kids like Barney and Clint one of the hardest things is reconciling those two things, a parent who did both good and bad thins.)

aaaaaahhhhh, i'm so excited!!! BTW, your Red Series defined Clint and Natasha for me and made me obsessed with them...I kept reading it over and over and over for MONTHS when I finally this forum...had no idea it existed. I kept seeing things posted back in the fall when I had my daughter and thought "dammit, I missed all the fun!" But you are here!! All of you lovely ladies are here!! I bow at your feet.

Shake it out is on my spy playlist. I completely agree that it works for Natasha. I like what you said about it almost being defiant. Great choice.
[identity profile] happilydancing.livejournal.com on May 25th, 2013 11:07 pm (UTC)
This is bad, but I have no feelings on what Natasha would like or listen to...so I'll just say whatever you ladies have stated sounds right to me. *nods*

I don't know if this song fits them, but whenever I heard the Pink/Nick Reuss song "Give me a reason", I want to hear Scarlett and Jeremy singing it. And it being the theme to their movie that will never, but should exist.

"Sing" from My Chemical Romance is another song that reminds me of them...especially "I am not a singer, but a dancer"...not literally dancing, but just their artistry in their fighting.
franztastisch: j2[personal profile] franztastisch on May 25th, 2013 11:10 pm (UTC)
not literally dancing, but just their artistry in their fighting. THIS.

I always think Natasha has quiet background music. With very few lyrics (that she can understand, hence me liking the idea of her liking Sigur Ros). And then classical. Especially Russian and the... epic imperial sounding stuff.

YouTube
I'm going to use as many YouTube links - that I hope everyone will be able to view - as possible. Also, I feel like I've done this exact same list here in the past so I apologize if I don't find anything new for you!

While I'm really horrid at putting music into the heads of the characters until I need it to be there, I do have a pretty intense list going for my own writing of Clint and Natasha!

First, I think Vienna Teng has a lot of Natasha songs and you just can't go wrong for getting into a dark mindset while listening to My Medea (http://youtu.be/nzxUiCgTXVc) because it's so beautiful and almost hopeful but it's really not either, when you get right down to it.

A very Clint/Natasha song (from her viewpoint) is Your Amour (http://youtu.be/PRKWStIoJa8) by Charlotte Martin.

9 Crimes (http://youtu.be/vHt72jJ_1t0) (and especially this version) by Damien Rice makes me want to write C/N like nothing else! I'm glad this one isn't in typical rotation so that I can let it immediately take me to a bit darker place when I bring it up.

Awhile back, I went looking for "circus music" and found Flying Scarlett (http://youtu.be/YP_Syn5lgYg) from Cirque du Soleil. Not only is this beautiful but I think it does a really good job of putting me into a C/N place. Also, while we're in a "without words" frame of mind, Arise (http://youtu.be/uNvTSlGyKUs) by ES Posthumus is GORGEOUS as a background for anything resembling a fight scene!

Sleepwalking by Peter Hollens. BTW, he also does some pretty amazing things with Skyrim music. Anyway, this is just such a hopeful song for all that it isn't a hopeful song.

I have to end here to put a little boy to sleep but Don't Let Me Be Lonely (http://youtu.be/9kF1XHhrCEo) by The Band Perry gives me Clint feels.

I'll be back with more, I'm sure!
