Monthly Comics Discussion Post: February. Ish.
Whoops! Last month got derailed by preparation for the Valentine's Promptathon (AND IT WAS AWESOME), and the end of February coincided with some Stuff in my life so this post slipped my mind until now. Never mind, that means we get two discussion posts this month!

February was a big month for Clint and Natasha. Black Widow #3 was released and we finally got another Clint-centric issue of Hawkeye. Elsewhere, Shit Went Down in Secret Avengers. In further comics news, February also saw the release of Ms Marvel #1 and She-Hulk #1, to great critical and fan acclaim.

March is another big month in comics, with Black Widow #4 being released later in the month and Secret Avengers being relaunched next week I believe. The previews for Secret Avengers #1 show Clint crashing Natasha and Jessica Drew's spa day.

Discuss!

FYI: new Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Secret Avengers NEXT WEEK!

Am I the only one excited for the new Secret Avengers? The preview pages look promising! Plus, that Hawkeye censored icon NEEDS to appear more. Because hilariousness. ;D If it weren't there, well, I certainly wouldn't object either. ;D

Black Widow #3 - FEELS. I HAVE MANY. I want to give Natasha a hug, if she'd let me.

Hawkeye #15 - THAT CLIFFHANGER!! Just....ADFLJFKSADFADA!!!

Ms. Marvel #1 - I kind of adore this comic. The hallucination sequence was just awesome.

Loki: Agent of Asgard #1 - LOVE the Clint and Natasha scene. Just...so much love. Loki's commentary is pretty spot-on and hilarious.

Is Black Widow released next week? I thought it wasn't released until later this month! That's awesome, we get it earlier. *bounces* The unlettered preview looks gorgeous, I think Phil Noto's art gets better each issue.

That cliffhanger in Hawkeye #15 was... GAAAAAAAAAH. It was a great issue, Aja's art has never been better and it was great to see Natasha, Bobbi and Jessica make guest appearances. The one quibble I had was Natasha's dialogue, it seemed oddly 'stereotypical comic book foreigner,' which is weird because she's hardly ever written like that (and why would she be? She's an international spy!). :/

Yup, March 12th! I double-checked my digital subscriptions. =D

Fantastic! That's going to a great day for comics.

I'm looking forward to the new Secret Avengers, but I wish Bobbi was still a member of the team. :(

Guess I'll have to call my comics shop and ask them to keep copies for me ... Last time I was too late for BW #3. IT SOLD OUT!! Which is a Good Thing, except at the time it really wasn't...

Oh, a friend of mine made me a Marvel box. I now have a box to keep my comics in. My husband is still shaking his head.

I'm with you on the accent thing in #15. That was a bit ... odd. Especially as I don't recall her having that the last time she appeared in Hawkeye?

You guys almost make me want to buy a Loki comic. Is it worth it?
[identity profile] morrighangw.livejournal.com on March 5th, 2014 02:45 am (UTC)
I think the new Loki comic is worth it. Loki's narration is pretty funny (I could TOTALLY hear Tom Hiddleston narrating), and the set up for the rest of the storyline within the first issue was really interesting. The art is also pretty to look at. =)

OK thanks -- I may just give it a shot ... :-)

Next issue is out tomorrow. =)

Now I want to write the "5 Different Times Natasha and Jessica Avenged their Spa Day" fic. Between the two of them I'm sure they'd be pretty creative.

I LOVED SHE-HULK SO MUCH. I just identified with her more than any other comic book character I've ever read for some reason. Does anyone else want to squee about that?

I'm really loving Black Widow. The art is fabulous, the stories are interesting, and it's making me want a Black Widow movie even more (if that's possible :P). And what I hear about #4 is making me excited, because two of my favorite characters in the same place.

Also, I thought it was interesting how comfortable Natasha was in the jungle. I always saw her as working best in the city and around people in the built environment, and it was interesting to get that different perspective that works so well with her character.
[identity profile] morrighangw.livejournal.com on March 5th, 2014 12:22 am (UTC)
OMG YES to that fic!! I would looooovvvvveeee to see what they'd do to Clint. =D
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on March 5th, 2014 12:24 am (UTC)
Well, we have to wait to see what the canon versions of themselves do :)

Seconding this! I love the way Jessica and Natasha's friendship has developed lately and I'd like to see what nasty things they could come up with between them. ;)

I loved She-Hulk too! She-Hulk and Ms Marvel felt so fresh and fun. The art in She-Hulk isn't entirely to my taste, but it does suit the comic's tone very well and it's great visual storytelling.

The preview for Black Widow #4 has me very excited, because NATASHA AND MARIA BEING AWESOME TOGETHER. Maria looks stunning.
[identity profile] hufflepuffsneak.livejournal.com on March 5th, 2014 12:33 am (UTC)
Maria! I kind of want her to get her own television show, or take over for Coulson after he gets killed for reals. (And I love how in the art they look real and relatable. I don't feel like I'm being invited to look at them, more that I'm being allowed to watch their story.)

I have to confess the She-Hulk art isn't as good as the Black Widow art by a long shot, but I think the covers are AMAZING and the story/ dialogue is strong enough that the art doesn't really detract. And the visual story-telling does work, even if I don't like the style so much.

I liked Ms. Marvel, but I thought the writing was sometimes little preachy and obvious (probably because I've just gone through the wringer of studying a lot of these issues academically, so what is new to most people is not to me). But I LOVED Kamala, she is already such a great and three-dimensional character, in just one issue. Fingers crossed that the sales don't drop off too much for any of these books.

[identity profile] sugar-fey.livejournal.com on March 5th, 2014 12:38 am (UTC)
Yeah, the art in She-Hulk is an... acquired taste? But it does have good visual storytelling and like you said, the writing makes up for it. I wish they'd gotten the cover artist to do the interiors as well. >.<

I loved Ms Marvel, though I agree some themes were a little heavy handed. Kamala is such a wonderfully developed character, she feels so real it's almost like a real life teenager got sucked into the pages of a Marvel comic! Ms Marvel is shaping up to be everything I hoped Young Avengers would be.

Yeah, Kamala really does feel like a real teenager (which I didn't realize before you mentioned it, and which is sadly lacking in a lot of fiction about teenagers).

I just want one issue where the cover artist for She-Hulk does the interior art as well, so I can buy several copies, one to read, one to safe keep and the others to do artsy stuff with so I can hang something on my wall.

Yeah, that was my issue with Young Avengers. They didn't really feel like teenagers, or rather, they felt like an adult's idea of how contemporary teens speak and act, like most 'teenage' dramas on TV. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but it was disappointing. Kamala on the other hand feels like the teenage girls I tutored last year.

Let's see, thoughts on recent Marvel comics...

Haweye 15: so many caught with pants down type jokes to be had! I continue to love these comics! But argh, cliffhanger.

Black Widow: I continue to adore the art, and the narration in #3, oh my heart. I had my fingers crossed when they said they were bringing out a Black Widow comic, I admit, but I'm more than happy to uncross them at this point, sit back, and appreciate.

Loki Agent of Asgard #1: the first issue was worth it for the fact that the story revolves around Loki showing up at the Avenger's Tower. It's amusing and has a great Clint and Natasha scene. And as it's a story about stories and story telling I think I'll give the next one a shot.

Secret Avengers: the end of the Mockingbird arc...I'm not convinced I entirely got the point of that run, and the ending...the whole 'and now you will forget' for the rest of them is just painful. I'm not sure about the artwork for the new run, but in the previews it looks like the humour remains, so I'll dive in :)

In the ladies issues: She-Hulk #1 was not my cup of tea I'm afraid, I don't really like the artwork and the story didn't grab me. Someone yell at me if i'm making a mistake and really need to read issue 2. Ms Marvel I DID like; I like the artwork and the story wasn't condescending even if was a bit obvious. Young in tone, but I can live with that. And I had no interest in the upcoming Elektra, but I'm liking the art that I'm seeing and there is a Skottie Young cover. (Damn, I can't resist those, lol.) And more Captain Marvel is on the way! Any more ladies comics we should be keeping our eyes peeled for?

First things first: ZOMG HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Secret Avengers was... strange. It felt really rushed, and some plotlines weren't resolved. I'm hoping the relaunch will inject some much needed life back into the comic, but I'm disappointed Bobbi won't be a member of the team any longer. I don't want her to be in limbo. :/

I don't know of any more lady comics coming out, but they're announcing new titles fairly regularly, so who knows!

Awww, THANKING YOU!!! *hugs*

Yeah, I liked it when it started. Like the conversation between Nat and Clint on the plane in the early Now issues. But the recent arc? It got to the mansplaining comment and at first I responded with 'yes! ' and then I paused and went 'but hang on, um, actually isn't this kind of what the whole arc is?' I don't know, I just felt let down. Here's hoping it comes back strong. And maybe Bobbi, Bucky, and Daisy could work from the outside at cracking the Reverie?

I like that lady comics are a thing now! I want to make sure I read at least the first issue of each to support :)

Seconding the Happy Birthday!

(And I'll let you know if She-Hulk gets drastically better, or if the art changes.)

Aww, thank you! And thank you :)
